😡 Avoid bad tile Contractor, installer. Tile contractor driving you crazy, in this video I give you ten tips on what to look for when hiring a tile installer to install your master bathroom, kitchen floor, or whatever you need. I reference an article I came across on the CTEF (Ceramic Tile Education Foundation) website, www.ceramictilefoundation.org... I elaborate and add my own perspective on the tips that I found to be very useful when trying to find and decide on a tile contractor to install your tile and to get the right installer the first time and limit the risk of having the tile done badly or unsatisfactory.

After hiring a contractor to do our bath and realizing that he had no clue what he was doing, we had to remove his installation mid-way and start everything from scratch again by ourselves. For final tile installation we screened about 8 different contractors, the most common answer we got to all of the questions: "I've been doing it for 20 years and never had any problems" 😂

A lot of these red flags was what I was before I had my own tile contractor business. Only been doing bathroom remodel for a year It was my side gig I charged on the cheaper end. I’d say it’s a hit miss for newer guys. Wanted to thank all my customers for taking a chance on me when I was starting out.

Same here I'm just getting my LLC and EIN etc. We all start somewhere. I know what I'm doing and I'm sure WE will have more jobs than we can handle once word gets out !

One other thing a homeowner should do before hiring an installer is to verify that his or her license is in good standing. Check with your state's licensing board or agency.

Only two states require a licensee for tile installers.

Also, licenses don't mean squat when it comes to quality work. So many shit licensed contractors, and I've known many top notch contractors that were unlicensed. Good unlicensed contractors dont need to advertise because they are well known in their community for their work.

@ripvansparky Checking someone's license is a way of finding out if that particular installer has ever been sued or had his license suspended.

I like watching that time compressed progression video of the install. It picks up subtle hand techniques in your movements. Would like you to give listeners four go / no-go technical questions (and correct answer) to ask would be contractors when soliciting bids. Ie can shower tile be installed directly to cement board? Carry on

Sal do you feel confident in that rubber boot connection to the drain? I have a tile project I will be doing with these shlutter drains soon. I normally do pre-slope method but want to try this one. It will be over plywood floor on the second story. Full bathroom remodel.

Materials Used in the video. I noticed in the video a mix of Material companies, Laticrete Hydroban wall boards, looks like Schluter Kerdi band corners but then using the Hydroban band in other areas. Did not think that you could mix Hydroban with the Schluter system -? And curious why you did cement/dry pack shower pan?

I've been burned so many times that now I just do it myself. There are a lot of cowboys out there pretending to be contractors. Thankfully I'm retired so I can do all the research and testing that I need to do before attempting anything.

The majority of tile guys are tile placers or I like to call them tile layers. A real tile guy is called a tile setter because we're setting tile..... That's right, they're called photo showers, because they only look good..... If somebody comes to your house and says that they're gonna remodel all of the dry floor and retile the master bathroom. And they say they're gonna do it for let's say 6000. That's a red flag..... What most showers are between 10 and 15000....... Last part we're talking about being certified. And all that I agree with you for the most part, but I went through the school of hard knocks and had to learn the hard way that I was doing it wrong and then learned from somebody that was doing it correctly so just because you have a certification or you're in the ntca. Or whatever really doesn't mean anything. Because I'm in neither and I'm better than most tile guys out there. I actually know somebody who just passed their certified test. And he's only been doing it for like 5 or 6 years. And I've been doing it for 24 and I'm better than him, but yet he's certified, so take that with a grain of salt.... Also, the new n TCA video is showing improper installation method of a shower Pan. You should go check that out. They just put it up...... ridiculous......... Also, that last part about the little story with the Gc try explaining that to a Florida general contractor and they'll just hide behind the incorrect law. That states that you don't need a pre slope or any type of slope if the shower is recessed in the concrete.😂😂..... Point is, the law is not always correct.

Being a Certified Tile Installer (CTI) does not mean you are the best or most experienced, it means you have met the minimum number of years installing, know proper methods and standards and have been tested by an impartial body to certify you know them, both written and practical. More and more design professionals are requiring qualified, certified installers. I get all of what you say, and agree with you for the most part, the industry is full of hacks and there needs to be a way to identify them.

@SalDiBlasi I agree, but isn't there only like 2500 certified tile installers in the United States? And that's probably 2500 just in some states or counties. I guess it's good to have under your belt. But at this point, in my career, I don't feel like I need to be certified but I do keep up on all of the new stuff and want to know and learn more so I see what you're saying. We would have to get a lot more people certified than a little around 2000 to make an impact. I wish it wasn't so hard to find a quality tile installer.

Have to start somewhere, we get more CTIs every year. Will take time, but at some point it will start to make a real impact.

@SalDiBlasi I hope so, I just wish the regular person from a two hundred thousand dollar house All the way up to a million dollar house and up could just get stock showers from a builder that even if the cuts don't look the greatest, at least there's some Slope. The law in Florida must change. Every single house has one recess shower if it was built-in the last 40 years. I fight the good fight everyday, With Tile. I hope it pays off.

And if someone knows all the proper procedures doesn't mean they will always follow them. Low budgets, messed up bids, or if a client just wants something "good enough" whatever that means. I get that a lot in my area.
