Yeah, Lake is the go-to maniac for all things friction and oil. A tribologist? A very interesting field of study. Wanna learn. Hang with Lake.

I will say this for gapless rings, they do indeed keep the oil cleaner. Thing about gapless rings is it does up your dynamic compression because it seals better and keeps more squeeze in the cylinder. They really are worth the money.

Hot Rod did the test 6 years ago. Was good for 8 hp on a healthy SBC, not very much. But..... I'm all for the thinner, low tension rings for the decreased wear. Especially when they are WPC treated. I'd love to see a comparison between thin, low tension rings vs. the same rings WPC treated.

For nascar block honing , is the block heated with water temp compatable with running temp to keep the bore straight from the beginning , I think most of us know that heat distorts iron, just unsure if block heating makes any difference 🤔

2:45, Error. "If you run a 16th ring versus 0.7 mm ring you can see a reduction in wear by55% ..."??? Don't mix apples with bananas.
@michaelmoon88563 ай бұрын
He is talking ring width in both cases. Whether it is expressed in inches or mm or both is irrelevant.
@alext88283 ай бұрын
@@michaelmoon8856 No, he mixed himself up. He said: "If you run a 1/16 instead of a .7 mm it causes a reduction in wear." He was trying to show that the .7 reduces wear. You weren't listening carefully enough. It's a bad habit to mix these things. It almost killed the Apollo 13 astronauts and in mixed Lake up too. Don't do it.
@LooseNut0993 ай бұрын
Agreed. Mixing units of measurement is not ideal.
@gearhead78963 ай бұрын
@@alext8828 Yes, he said it backwards at first but he then he says it correctly. 5/64" has been the standard for years, then the high performance was the 1/16" ring (kinda still is). Now it is in metric. If you look at the latest model SBC engines (98,99) the ring pack is metric. Same for the LS series engines. It's metric now, he's correct to mix them.

@@gearhead7896 So he needed to convert one to the other. I'm saying it's bad to mix apples with bananas and he proved my point. Nothing else to be said.

I always wondered why newer engines are still great at 200K miles. I did watch a video on the Honda 1.5L and how you can almost turn the engine over ( no compression ) by hand.

I've been studying this of late. Seems motorcycle racers were removing 2nd ring for less friction,more power. High revs. But reluctant to promote this. I'm talking two stroke; but may include four stroke. More willing to rev also.
@TotalSeal3 ай бұрын
The two rings set up is typically more for compression height, which allows the piston to be lighter.

I'm going to be rebuilding an OM606 turbo diesel in the next year or two. What kind of rings would you recommend for a high performance diesel engine?

How is ring tension measured? It's a radial force and direction.

Radial force via a tangential load meter

Love you content. What effect does coolant temp have on low tension rings. What temp(s) are a problem area that should be avoided. I assume that if you get a engine hot you will pay for your sins !!!
@TotalSeal3 ай бұрын
Actually it is the opposite. Low temperature operation will cause more oil consumption with low tension oil rings than high temperature. The steel used to make thinner rings can easily handle high temperatures.
