Avoid this Man in Sri Lanka! (Colombo Beach SCAM) 🇱🇰

Күн бұрынI arrived in Sri Lanka on a whim having had enough of Chennai. As I checked into my place in the capital city, Colombo, I was excited to learn of a local buddhist ceremony that would be taking place that night.
With a couple of hours to explore, I headed down to Galle Face Beach to meet with the locals and gather my first impressions of Sri Lanka. After chatting with a friendly local lady selling cold coconuts, I was approached by a curious old man who introduced himself as a Catholic by the name of 'Sylvester' - who ended up being a scammer.
Having called his bluff when I later saw trying to run the same routine on another unsuspecting victim by the beach, I decided to head off and get something to eat (avoid this man in Sri Lanka!).
Since the first place had apparently shut down, I ventured towards a local's place known as Raheema Hotel - confusingly, not a hotel at all, but an old-school eatery.
My first impressions of Sri Lankan food were just as good as the weather - I tried egg roti, samosas, sambar, dhal, and the most incredible chicken biryani, not forgetting the delicious desserts and my first ever falooda drink to finish.
Full of some of the best (and spiciest!) food in south Asia, it was time for the Navam Perahera & Vesak Festival celebrations to start back towards Gangaramaya Temple, overlooking the lake opposite Colombo City Centre Mall.
There was elephants, fire and traditional dancing into the early hours - and even whips!

Hi James First of all I love all the details you capture in your videos. Keep rocking. As for this senior who showed you some of his prescriptions relating to his health, the chances of him genuinely suffering from age related health issues are probably true. Hence him asking you for some financial help, given his age, in all probabilities deem as legitimate. There are scammers who do take advantage of local and foreign tourists but sometimes a little help would be a game changer for people who are below the poverty line. I sincerely hope that you are never ever scammed, period. Incidentally, I would have loved to see you buy some food and a cup of tea for the senior in conclusion. Travel safe and keep in touch. Thanks my friend. Check out the other comment from someone who lives in Colombo and said that he saw him there doing the same thing weeks later! His entire yarn was based on a hospital visit and waiting for a bus ride back to Kandy or somewhere that day. Its total garbage

@InvestedAdventure From your perspective, it might have seemed like a major scam operation. But poverty leads to desperate measures. There are scammers in all forms, no doubt. Sometimes, it does help to get into his shoes and see things from a different perspective. The senior being a top notch scammer in this instance is very weak. Trying to survive would be an apt description.

Amidst all the positive things to experience in SL, unfortunately, there are scammers, stalkers begging for money, and some vendors/ tuktuk drivers who may resort to overcharge tourists. I hope you won't have to endure such experiences for the rest of your stay. And thanks so much for exploring and exposing the best things SL has to offer to the rest of the world. traditionally the whips were used to help clear the path for the performers. the whip crack sound afaik is cos the whip tip recoils at such speed..its supersonic

It was pretty keen, I must say… I had literally just got out of the rickshaw and walked to the coconut stand. There’s also a deleted scene which didn’t quite capture a guy who had been eyeing up my GoPro and was looking to mug me (i wasn’t scared as he was just a junkie, but it did put a different slant on things). Some great people here though - wait till you see my video on Abdul Hameed St

Sri Lanka is getting a bad name because of these scammers. The tourism has fallen into a deep hole because of these people. You as a tourist should complain this to the nearest police station. A few scammers got arrested recently due to the complaints .

I saw the video of the bamboo biryani man - albeit I wanted to clear his name as a good guy (at least to me, when I was there). I don’t want to make anyone’s life difficult, but I won’t shy from showing the truth. I loved Sri Lanka and I’ll be going back soon

Thank you Imran. Have you seen the video of "bamboo biryani" man on Abdul Hameed street? It hit the press recently, when another creator showed him being rude towards him - and it landed him in trouble with the police. I had filmed there two weeks before and showed him to be a good character. If you can help direct my video to the local authorities, I would like to help clear his good name

That old sick gentleman looked genuinely poor, old and helpless. i would have at least bought him a meal or given 500 LKR. And you scammed those two girls 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Nasdaily is a mega celebrity on social media. Recently he too visited Sri Lanka and invested in property here as well. Enjoy Sri Lanka and safe travels! And why don't you use Google maps when traveling uncharted territories ?

when Sri Lanka economy was in danger and no one on earth was helping India helped with grants and loans of several billion dollars and still giving. Indian Foreign Minister himself went to Sri Lanka with massive petrol tankers. On July 08, 2023, expressing his gratitude to "trustworthy friend" India for saving Sri Lanka and preventing "another bloodbath for all of us" during its unprecedented economic crisis last year, Parliament Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena has said that not a single nation has extended that kind of assistance to Colombo as done by New Delhi.

With ultirior motives. Until economic crisis no money owing to India. Only to European countries. Japan and China. Then India realise they have no roll to play in Sri Lanka. Immediately make their presence visible to world with new financial help. 😂😂😂😂 But soon Sri Lanka will finish paying the credit line extended by India with interest 😂😂 these are all loans Also nearly 600000 six hundred thousand Indian people living in Sri Lanka refusing to return back to India fir last 200 years 😂😂😂
