I had a rooster that was giving me guff once, pecked my leg/foot and my rottweiler charged up and barked at it. The little guy saw a giant carnivore 40 times its size come barreling up at 20mph and he bolted into the coop and left me alone after that. Flock guardians are a bit like bouncers, always keeping the peace, and they know that in the farm club that the Boss is more important then anyone else.

sounds about right. i knew someone who's chickens formed gangs like in a prison, they each had their own parts of the coop, their own feeder, and their own water dispenser. IF 1 chicken wandered too close to the other "gang" they'd chase her away and peck her. They're chickens though, i.e idiots, so they occasionally attacked members of their own gang on accident or wandered into the wrong group without anyone even noticing.

@@1973moondragon right?! I vividly remember events that occurred when I was 3 years old. Sure they're the big and bad memories, they make an impression that sticks with you. I don't remember the day to day stuff, but I definitely have memories of running head first into a table and bleeding everywhere at 3 and a few other things.

@@johnbrown-rm8kc I personally could not stand when he was using the 360 camera and I dislike when he forgets to back the zoom out when he is talking to the camera. But I have never disliked a video by the thumbs down thing.

a small number of people are bound to accidentally dislike. I'd say around a quarter of the time i like or dislike a video its from my phone bouncing around in my pocket and then theres a 50/50 chance it will like/dislike the video so around 10% of all videos i like or dislike are accidental dislikes. There may be even more, but thats just what i notice when i rewatch videos and notice i've liked or disliked them before, there are probably more i accidentally dislike that i never notice.

I started watching @goldshawfarm a little while before getting my own ducklings and Goslings. I started my birds, the first night I had them, to "All ducks, go to bed", when I turned out the light in their brooder room. Their heat lamp was the ceramic kind that put off no light, so the room went dark. Fast forward to 4 weeks old, and moving them into their house, they know "All ducks, go to bed" means to go into their house. It wasn't, and still isn't, fool proof, but it is so much easier! My birds are still rather young at 3 months old, so we still have issues will a couple of the hens not getting with the program on occasion, but it's usually only one and not a bunch of them, that don't follow the flock. I swear it's the same two girls that take turns, being "that ONE"... LOL

Ditto. I treat animals well but i grew up on a farm so even though i like my flock that doesnt mean I'll hesitate to replace them. My dad used to do what he called a "30 day lay or vacate" (like how a landlord does a 30 day pay or vacate) where he'd give a hen a set period of time to start laying or she'd get Kentucky Fried. A chicken or duck has 3 jobs: produce eggs, produce more birds, or produce meat. If they cant lay and cant breed then she gets demoted to dinner.

Yes, that video got me over my trepidation of raising and then harvesting ducks after hearing others' woes! Such great info in that video! I don't have a homestead again yet due to unavoidable circumstances, but I WILL find a way after a move from CA to NC as soon as I can escape here! In the meantime I watch a collection of people who left the city to homestead, and I learn so much! After already enjoying a personable flock of chickens before, I think I am addicted to ducks now... thanks, Morgan!!
