Considering they are out in rural Vermont I would not be surprised if a lot of the packages she deals with includes little peepers. Well, compared to someplace more urban, where I would almost expect them to call a bomb squad if they heard the boxes making peeping noises. Edit: Mistook Virginia for Vermont.

They are fast! My ducklings are 3 weeks old and they are speedy indeed. Plus now I have to pick them up one at a time, two hands, to move them around or they would get away 😆

We have a flap on our duck shack and they won't go in if the flap is down, even though they would have to put in no effort to move the flap

I use the plastic strips that walk in freezers use, like at the grocers. My chickens, ducks and even pigeons walk right through them.

As someone who has owned Meremma dogs in the past. He may not even want to sleep in the dog house.. he will want to be as close as he can get to his flock to have the maximum efficiency of protecting it.. We built my last meremma an awesome dog house that he refused to use because he want to be able to see into the house of a night when he was on 'patrol'

@Dan Rod muscovies re a different species that produces mule birds when it mates with ducks (like lions and tigers, horses and donkeys). They nest in trees, they can perch. If GSF wants to get hybrid ducks muscovies are not what he needs to buy as the offspring will not reproduce.

Believe me, as a herding dog trainer, I started with Runners because everyone was saying they were the "thing" to use...and they were all sold and gone after one year. They are TERRIBLE ducks to train new herding dogs on. They are not hardy and they are DUMB...Dumbests ducks I ever used for herding. I now have Welsh Harlequins and they are hands down, the smartest, most personable, very quiet and best working duck for training dogs and they are tremendous layers (I get 280-300 eggs per duck per year). They also have great weight and easy plucking for the table (plenty of mine have ended up in the freezer when I hatch out too many males). They are an unimproved breed, so they do take about 12-16 weeks to mature to harvest weight and they take a full year before the females will lay eggs. They also make good mothers and will go broody (not as nice as a chicken, but better than most other ducks). If you want hardy and well tempered herding duck...#1 Welsh Harlequin, #2 Call duck (only con: they are tiny and loud!), #3 Blue/Black Swede (only con: Large duck/large mess), #4 Cayuga (A little more flighty), #5 Khaki Campbell...Last on my list...Indian Runners!

I’m planning on buying ducks soon, as soon as I actually have a house lol, and do herding with hem since I know I won’t be able to have sheep. Indian Runners are by far the most popular in Sweden for herding, but it’s fun to see that you actually recommend one of our native breeds!

@@en.jonsson I much prefer Blue Swedes to start with a new dog and new handler. They are large and slow which allows you to actually spend time teaching the dog to gather, flank and control the heads. It also allows the new handler to understand where to be to control the movement of the ducks. They are also more hardy, so if you have a dog that has to "touch" the stock with their paws to just figure out what this "thing" is, they are large enough to handle a dog putting a paw on them a little bit. We train more than just border collies here, so ducks have to be able to be worked with upright dogs that might work tighter and closer on the flock. Indian runners are FINE to trial with once you have a well trained dog. But you will spend your time chasing ducks down the field to just get close enough to train your dog more than actually training your dog how to control the stock if you start on them. When you have a green dog that doesn't know where to be or how far away from a flock to work the bubble, that can create very bad habits of charging the flock or very bad ability to cover and keep the flock together. Slow and steady needed for training....then fast and furious can show off the talent at a trial.

@@LegendHold1 I totally agree. I have a couple of runner ducks and they are really dumb. I don't herd them, but still they are so dumb. It's one of the reasons why I love them. The best ducks for pest control. If it crawls they'll eat it.
