Lyrics:
Did you think that I was gonna give it up to you
This time?
Did you think that it was something I was gonna do
And cry?
Don't try to tell me what to do
Don't try to tell me what to say
You're better off that way, yeah

I love how she made a song about the self-proclaimed “nice guy” who thinks he deserves something in return for being nice well before consent was taught widespread. I’m happy she was one of my idols growing up.

@Slayer02538 Time flies for sure. This is probably gotta be one of my favorite Avril songs. Will keep it real though, I don’t fully agree with the message of the song; Avril once said in an interview that this is what “a lot of guys are like”, and I don’t believe that is true, I think there are more good men out there than they are bad, and I also don’t think it is just guys that can be predators, I know for a fact that women can too. Of course, it is not just “all men bad” or “all women bad”, it is just simply that there are bad people out there. I also don’t think there is just pressure on girls to give their bodies up for sex, as Avril said, I think there is just as much of a push for men to also, in this crazy world we live in. But as a big time Avril fan, I think the song has a very important message in it, about not sexually giving yourself freely to anyone (and that goes for both women *and* men), but I think it could have been done more positively then her just simply saying that most guys are perverts. To me that is a pretty bad message to send to young girls, and would most likely put negative feelings towards men in them. It could have been worded a lot better and been less biased. I love Avril, but to this day, her words on this topic still leave a bad taste in my mouth. It doesn’t make me angry at all or anything, just a bit disappointed. Gotta say, though, as for the song itself, it sounds awesome, it has a Nirvana/Alice in Chains vibe to it, and I can’t get enough of it. And that is the beauty of music. We can still listen to it and enjoy it without having to agree with the message 100% of the time. 👍

I love how this song existed at a time when the whole “consent is very important” wasn’t a wide spread thing. I love how it’s talked about a bunch today, and I even bet this song helped in some way. Seeing her sing about it at a time like that is just awesome and truly inspiring. She never tries to do what is “trendy” she just does what she does.

I mean maybe, just maybe, there are actually such a thing as good guys out there. And maybe these good guys wish that good girls would stop falling for ass holes and "giving it up" to the ass holes. Maybe these good guys wish good girls would "give it up" to them instead, and then hope they realize it wouldn't actually be a bad thing that they "gave it up" to the good guys, because guess what....afterwards they will CONTINUE to treat them right, stay with them, not cheat on them, etc.... Maybe, just maybe, those are the guys y'all SHOULD be giving it up to if you want to be happy with some one? Just a thought.

@@skipperpippins7538 the fact that your first reaction to a woman talking about men ignoring consent is to victim blame women and girls and throw an old "not all men" shows that you are nothing but amother shit guy. All the self identified "nice guys" are usually the worst most entitled and misogynistic pos a woman meets, and it's not a woman's job to give men like you a chance just because you say so. Not all men, but ENOUGH men. I'm not gonna cuddle a snake just because a lot of snakes aren't poisonous.

"Don't Tell Me" You held my hand and walked me home I know why you gave me that kiss It was something like this It made me go oh oh You wiped my tears Got rid of all my fears Why did you have to go? Guess it wasn't enough To take up some of my love Guys are so hard to trust Did I not tell you that I'm not like that girl: the one who gives it all away? Did you think that I was gonna give it up to you this time? Did you think that it was something I was gonna do and cry? Don't try to tell me what to do Don't try to tell me what to say You're better off that way Don't think that your charm And the fact that your arm Is now around my neck Will get you in my pants I'll have to kick your ass And make you never forget I'm gonna ask you to stop Thought I liked you a lot But I'm really upset Get out of my head Get off of my bed Yeah, that's what I said Did I not tell you that I'm not like that girl: the one who throws it all away? Did you think that I was gonna give it up to you this time? Did you think that it was something I was gonna do and cry? Don't try to tell me what to do Don't try to tell me what to say You're better off that way This guilt trip that you put me on won't mess me up I've done no wrong Any thoughts of you and me have gone away Did you think that I was gonna give it up to you this time? It's so interesting watching this through the lens of today and with what we know now with mental health and what have you. At the beginning of the video, the way she is dressed is sort of what she embraces in the later albums when she goes mainly white, pink and splashes of black and yet when she did people hated her for doing it but she clearly showed us very early on that she liked that palette plus maybe represented her a bit more (vulnerability). The darker look and outfit is the way she protects herself with that darker attitude and emotion, and I feel like so many of us resonated with that as so many of us grew up so emotionally unsupported so we protected. She is also singing about being completely gaslit which was something not talked as much about them as it is now. I imagine the way this music takes us back to specific personal moments is the same way the older music did for our parents but unfortunately they didn't have the internet to share it with each other and connect that way.

Since the Let Go era she used pink in her clothes, literally you can find photos at the beginning of her career with pink stuff... also she showed her room in her first DVD from 2003 and we can see hello kitty stuff there in her room, she has always loved that cat. Never understood why SOME people started that shit of "she didnt like those things in her first 2 albums, she changed a lot, she is not like she used to be with those girly things"... when you can easily find photos of her from 2002-2003-2004-2005 using that kind of things. People are just stupid and dont see the reality of things.

I feel bad for this generation of young people that they don't have a young artist who is encouraging empowerment and saying you don't have to give in to pressure to have sex if you are not ready. Avril really did break down barriers being a young female artist that promoted self empowerment and it resonated with young girls around the world. Like I said it's too bad the music industry has nobody like Avril Lavigne today that can speak to young people like Avril did when she first started out in the music industry as a teenager.

I am listening to this during quarantine. As a child I lived off of Avril Lavigne's music. Every time I hear it play on the TV on the music channel I rush and turn up the volume. Today she is still my favorite female rock artist because of her I really wanted to become a rock artist. Her music reminds me of my wild and somewhat proper personality traits. I hope she continues to make great rock music and don't stop cuz that is the reason I fell in love with her in the first place.🙂😀 I am from the Bahamas but I have mixed descent (Just trying to make a conversation)

@@coreydelsweets260 hey! I'm from the Czech Republic. Avril is my childhood. I found her when I was ten years old I think, and even now, six years later I still find myself listening to her from time to time. I was supposed to go to her concert this March but it has been cancelled because of the coronavirus. Anyway, it's probably gonna be rescheduled so I'm still looking forward to hear her songs live. I believe it has to be amazing. I now listen to more rock and metal music but I found these genres thanks to her. It's just I can't in words describe how much I love her. Wow, I didn't plan to write that much and I'm sorry if I bother you, I'm just getting really bored. Nevermind, have a nice day!

@@luckakovarova5349 You didn't bothered me at all, I was bored too😂. All I have right now is my nephew, mother, sister, and my book that I am writing; hoping one day that it could get published. Music always got me through hard times. From since the beginning of this year life has been complicated, life has always been that way. This quarantine is nothing compared to what I have been through: I use to be illiterate, had terrible asthma problems, I was bullied, I was isolated in my house most of my life, neglected and abused from my father, and I went to the orphanage and still ended up back in my father's custody (This happened in my childhood but this is only a half of what happened). I don't want to tell you what I had to go through as I got older cuz it would take ages to list it and explain😂🙂. But like I was about to say I grew up in a house full of music and that is what inspired me to do certain things. My favorite genres is All types of rock and pop but I am extremely open-minded so I listen to all genres and see the light in them. My third favorite would be R & B. I love recommending music so you should listen to Miguel he does a mixture of Rock and R & B. If you really like rock search for the Wildheart album but specifically listen to Going to Hell, Simple things, Funeral, Leaves, and damned. You might like his music. Thanks for replying, I usually don't have anyone to talk to. Also, hopefully the coronavirus would end so u could finally go to that Avril Lavigne concert. If you believe in God pray a layer of protection on your family and you. Thanks for your time.

@@coreydelsweets260 you're writing a book? That's cool! I've written many books but I only show them to my friends or post them on Wattpad. What are you writing about? Maybe one day we'll both have our books published! xd Oh, I'm sorry to hear that, I don't know how it had to feel but I'm glad you survived and I hope you're better now. I also was bullied when I was younger and it's a horrible experience, I think I'll never understand what someone brings to bully someone else. It took me a long time to get over it, I became really depressed and it almost cost me life, but luckily I'm still here. My house was also full of music during my childhood, my parents used to play me a lot of old rock bands which many of them I listen to till this day (like Nirvana for example, my parents love them and so thanks to them I enjoy their songs too). I'm gonna check all those songs and will let you now what I think. You can check Bring Me The Horizon, they're my favorite band and they got me through a lot. Their sound changed a lot during the years (they went from deathcore and metalcore to rock/pop) so I would specifically recommend the whole Sempiternal album (Can You Feel My Heart, Sleepwalking, Hospital for Souls etc.) I'm also glad you replied, I honestly didn't expect that and I want you to know that if you ever need someone to talk to, I'm here for you. And I really mean that! Thank you, that's really nice of you, I hope coronavirus will go away not only so I could go to the concert but because overall I believe it would be better for everyone. It's sad there isn't any young female artists now that are about female empowerment like Avril was when she first burst upon the music scene as a teenager. Avril was never a victim and refused to be portrayed as a Britney Spears clone and stood up to her critics that tried to put her down for being a young female in the rock music genre. But she had the last laugh on those critics becoming a pop culture icon and the face of the pop-punk music genre in the 2000's and this is why she was called the pop-punk princess and became the pop-punk Queen.

I do all the time n i 've noticed Avril has a gift to teach us to beware of Lame Guys : "Unwanted" "Idon't give' "What the Hell" "Losing Grip" ... This one is no exception it's her way to give to those who misbehave a big F..K You ! "Guys are so hard to trust ! " She says here

Agreed! Nothing tops 2000s music. 2000s everything is better than nowadays: fashion, movies, music, drama (bc there seemed to be less of it), etc.

This is my favourite song by Avril she really does tell that guy who she feels and he’s just like completely oblivious to how she feels about him and how she gives up in the end and realises she’s better off without him is amazing

You held my hand and walked me home, I know While you gave me that kiss you were something like this It made me go, oh, oh You wiped my tears got rid of all my fears Why did you have to go? Guess it wasn't enough to take up some of my love Guys are so hard to trust Did I not tell you that I'm not like that Girl, the one who gives it all away, yeah? Did you think that I was gonna give it up to you this time? Did you think that it was somethin' I was gonna do and cry? Don't try to tell me what to do Don't try to tell me what to say You're better off that way Don't think that your charm And the fact that your arm is now around my neck Will get you in my pants, I'll have to kick your ass And make you never forget I'm gonna ask you to stop thought I liked you a lot But I'm really upset (really upset) Get outta my head, get off of my bed Yeah, that's what I said Did I not tell you that I'm not like that Girl, the one who throws it all away? Did you think that I was gonna give it up to you this time? Did you think that it was somethin' I was gonna do and cry? Don't try to tell me what to do Don't try to tell me what to say You're better off that way This guilt trip that you put me on won't mess me up I've done no wrong Any thoughts of you and me have gone away Did you think that I was gonna give it up to you this time? Did you think that it was somethin' I was gonna do and cry? Don't try to tell me what to do Don't try to tell me what to say You're better off that way, yeah (better off that way) I'm better off alone anyway
