Allison Janney wins the 2002 Emmy Award for Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her performance as C.J. Cregg in The West Wing.

the way she absolutely NAILED that character, was just on another level...seriously. Right out of the gate, her character sucked you in, to where you couldn't take your eyes off of CJ. I mean, the entire cast was awesome...but she just stood out. The show could not have been even half as good without her, in my opinion. And it just hit me, how good she was in 'American Beauty"...now THAT character, just tore your heart out, you felt so bad for her.

C.J cregg imo is the greatest character for any actress to play and Allison Janney just killed it as CJ such a terrific actor

She won the prior 2 years in the "Supporting Actress " category. This was the year that she first won for Lead Actress. Many more to follow..😄

Landon Le They moved her up because she was in competition with Stockard Channing. Both were nominated by the Academy for Supporting Actress 2 years in a row, and Allison won both times. Aaron Sorkin thought Allison (appearing in every episode deserved a lead actress nom, leaving the supporting category open for the 3 other actresses from the WW. Stockard Channing won supporting. The greatest oversight of the Emmy awards is that Martin Sheen never won for lead actor. Two Cathedrals should have won it.

sandih29687 The real reason the Emmy’s moved her up (the Academy controls the nominations, not the show) is the fact that in the first two seasons CJ Cregg was a peripheral, ensemble player. Starting in season 3, the character became more central, with specific storylines centered around her, like the death threat storyline and relationship with Simon Donovan (Mark Harmon). Season Three was an epic season, with 12 individual acting nominations for the show, an Emmy record that still stands: Lead actor Martin Sheen; Supporting actor John Spencer (win), Dulé Hill, Richard Schiff and Bradley Whitford; Supporting actress Stockard Channing (win); Janel Moloney and Mary-Louise Parker; Guest actor Mark Harmon, Tim Mathieson and Ron Silver to go with Janney’s Lead actress win. The series got 21 total nominations that season.

0:44 Her 3rd consecutive Emmy win. 7 wins to date. :) Hour long tv dramas are notoriously grueling. Anywhere from 14-17 hr days easy.

If Allison Janney was a lesbian? I might go stalker....lol ( kidding I'm over 50 and quite content with my life) ...She is remarkable in all she does- Juno ( love the ultrasound scene) TWW - awesome....I do not watch much TV but she plays addict mom of addict daughter in a TV show I watched just to see her...and she was amazing - even in a blah formulaic script ....just a privilege to see her perform- well done !
