@@glorisyoung9696 No, not like a violin which is tuned in 5ths. In this instrument, each string is tuned to a note of the scale, similar to a piano. I'd have to watch more closely to see if this one is tuned to a chromatic scale (the white & black notes on piano), or a diatonic scale (just the white notes). I know that this song can be played in a diatonic scale. But she also could be tuning the strings to match a tune (music boxes are like that, just the notes needed for the song).

This instrument is really more like a bowed psaltry combined with a harpeleik. I have my grandmother's "Norwegian Zither Harp" made in 1926, awhich is actually a German instrument, a harpeleik, that has 64 strings arranged in chords. I loved hearing my grandmother play that lovely sounding instrument! You are making gorgeous music on your "Ukelin" DeeDee! Thanks so much for sharing!

Thank you for sharing the history of the instrument you're playing. When you played using the cords, I could visualize it being played in someone's home versus when you used the bows, I could imagine it being played in a church. Thank you so much.

What a beautiful sound! I'm thinking that some inventive woodworker could come up with foot pedals so you could play chords while using your three bows. Just a thought. Thank you for showing us this wonderful instrument and playing it for us!

It's wonderful that you're keeping these old instruments alive by playing them, and so well. The hurdy gurdy sounds similar to the bagpipes, with the drone and the continuous playing. Thanks for sharing ☺️

OMG! I had a Ukelin from 1967 till 2018 (when I downsized and moved.) When I was in high school, my music teacher gave me one he found in his attic in Connecticut. I never learned to play it - I was afraid that tuning the strings might break it, so I hung it on my wall as a decoration. It had the little wire music rack, and was in a dusty cardboard box.

That’s crazy! My first one was given to me by someone who had JUST cleaned out their Grandma’s attic! I had NO idea how to play it, but the note letters were under the strings, so I tuned it and fell in love with the violin sound, and the two-handed challenge!

It's not often remembered that there are two versions but it's nice that you remember. I also never had heard of a ukelin until this video but it's interesting

I know of three -- the third is similar to the second version Ms. Tibbits played, with a beautiful descant.

@@rachelwickart275 My friends and I recorded all three melodies on a CD and for the last verse recorded two melodies played together... done on dulcimers. Great fun!

@@elliehjemmet Sounds wonderful! Were they hammered dulcimers or the mountain-type? I play around with an Appalachian type that was handcrafted by a friend in Michigan, and have often thought about borrowing my daughter's violin bow to "see" what comes of it...

Having now watched several videos featuring a wide range of stringed instruments, I couldn't help wondering about replacing strings or even full restringing when these aren't exactly commonly-found instruments today, let along string sets. 12 strings can be a challenge, but some of the challenges these instruments would pose must be mind-boggling. Thanks for so many fascinating uploads.

How interesting! Mom had one stored under her bed for years and no one could figure out how to play it. Don't know if it is still in the house somewhere, but if I see it again, at least I'll know that a bow is needed to play it.
