watching this guy play the guitar is so mesmerizing. I know he doesnt really care to show his playing when its not on stage, the feeling for him is everything and the feeling on stage brings out his best. I saw UFO in chicago in 1979 (i think) and michael was all in black, never really moved, and played the stuffing out of his guitar, it was amazing.

Psychological problems abound with Michael Schenker. He went through depression, all kinds of things, his ability to play also suffered then returned in last 10 years or so. His interviews are revealing, its like you're watching about 3 or 4 different characters on after the other, at different times in his life. Sadly it looks as if he may never have got himself sorted out.

Agreed, Michael is nice and unfortunately pretty naive, especially in his younger years. He suffered some abuse from his bandmates (most notably Phil Mogg) that makes him pretty paranoid, abusing drugs and have some trust issues in 80's - 90's. I got hooked on UFO as a teen. As a young guitar player I also figured out what I liked so much about UFO. Obviously Michael's guitar playing and sound. At 61 I still like it. I actually got to work with them in the UFO prime period with UFO at a concert in West Virginia of all places. I was the union steward, a very young one of the stagehands union. What a great day that was. I agree about the 50 watt marshall. 100 watts is to much. Tube amps are great. I just played in small and midsized clubs. Even a 50 watt was to much so i used a fender deluxe reverb. Bands would bring 50 and 100 watt amps in the bars and it pushed the volume up so loud that you couldn't possibly get a good mix with clarity. I was also a young learning audio engineer and figured these things out fast. It doesn't matter how good you are if the finished product is garbage because the musicians didn't have the sense to keep the volume at a reasonable level for the sound person to be able to create a good mix. Great days none the less. We all lived and learned.

One of the best for sure. UFO certainly had their best years with Michael. He defined that band. Same with the Scorpions although they still had a good following with out him. Just not as big. I went to a concert in Pittsburgh to see UFO and it was when Michael had left the band. I didn't know it and the entire audience didn't either. UFO certainly didn't advertise it. Chapman had taken over for him. the theatre was pretty well full. It was the Stanley Theatre in the downtown cultural district. A big theatre. When UFO hit the stage before the first song was over more than half of the crowd were on their feet screaming Shenker, Shenker, Shenker and booing and screaming where is Michael. Phil stopped the show and actually and begged the audience to give Paul a chance. Every one calmed down and it was decent show but it wasn't UFO with Shenker. I was disappointed. I did like the band so i stayed but I would not have bought tickets if I had known he wasn't going to be the touring guitarist with them. I suppose this around 78 maybe a bit later. i cold look it up but why bother. First tour with Chapman after Michael left. Chapman is a very good player but he doesn't have that special magic the Shenk has. I also worked a few UFO concerts as a stagehand while Shenker was with them. I could tell some good stories about one of those shows in particular but i won't.
@MichaelMaxwell7472 жыл бұрын
I saw UFO with Paul Chapman soon after Michael left the band in the spring of 1979, the opening act was Judas Priest, supporting Killing Machine/Hell Bent for Leather! There was supposed to be another band called Wireless that couldn't play because there was an Airline strike and their equipment did not arrive. Judas Priest got to play a longer set than they would have and just brought the house down! We were all a little worn out for UFO but they were still great and Pete Way was all over that stage. Most of the people thought that he was the lead guitar player! This was when I was fifteen and happened a block away from my house. A life changing event.
