I find when I keep my free leg straight on axel takeoffs, it encourages me to swing around the corner. Also i’ve noticed a weird effect where my axis shifts in the air when I pull my leg in to rotate, so I end up too backwards on my landing (I call it a “tipsy-turvy axel haha). That’s why I personally prefer kicking up in a high h position! I just think it makes it easier to get a good snap and control the axis. I think your method creates more rotation though if you can control it! Not trying to challenge your thoughts or technique at all, just trying to provide a different view as you said in the video! Great video as always!!! 👍🏼

Now I have to try the free leg swinging motion you describe here. I currently have my free leg generally in the higher and more closed position you showed and it's never been pointed out by my coaches that this may be some of the cause of my issues, really the jump has just never been described this way at all to me. I feel like I am stuck when I go to jump and it just becomes a labored hop, it feels very hard to get any rotation, granted I'm only doing a waltz. But this makes sense, I am probably much too squared off as well to even generate much rotation due to the closed 'H' position I've learned with

If you don't have good technique, you are only going to go so far and it isn't usually to the top because you need the consistency and you won't have that with bad habits, which are very difficult to break. That is when I hear people saying, "oh she landed her axle" and I see how she managed to do it, I would not even count it as an axle. That is why I declined to be a judge. You have to use your edges to help you do the jumps. Kick and catch, however, have to get the timing right with the arms.

I am glad you get it, mpdnd, and thanks for weighing in. It is always reassuring to hear a concurring opinion.
