Thanks for doing this video. Now that I have more games under my belt, I do like Larry Harris GenCon 3.0 setup, plus it should be good to learn since it is what is used in Rank games. Beamdog data collected from games shows the percentages: 1942 2nd Edition out of the Box (Online Games) Allies Win Rate: 35% Axis Win Rate: 65% Larry Harris Gencon v3.0 (Online Games) Allies Win Rate: 45% Axis Win Rate: 55% I find those to be very telling in those small changes to be a better balance.

@@BoardGameNation I went through a period (maybe after Avalon Hill folded) when I was looking up old MB games from the 1960s and '70s. I had _The Game of Happiness_ (similar to Life) from a thrift store for awhile. I picked up a copy of the original _Battle Cry_ from the 1960s as well as _Air Empire_ and _Broadsides,_ though I didn't get WWII's _Hit the Beach_ or the Revolutionary War game, _Skirmish._ I did get _Sub Search_ a 3-D version of Battleship that I played twice (and lost both times). Some time after this, I think MB only wanted to re-release their hits, or create a Candyland-style game that fit in with the latest TV show or movie.

BGN, thanks for this concise and insightful summary of the 3.0 changes. Although I have not attended Gencon, my initial impression is that all these changes turn the balance in favor of the allies and make the game more imbalanced. I have played 2nd Ed. numerous times and, if you were playing with an experienced player, it is very difficult for the axis to win as is. Japan can never get to Moscow and Germany loses Africa and all of S. Europe to the Allies and Berlin gets strangled. What would help is a discussion of what made the experts think that the game was imbalanced in favor of the axis. Was there one or two axis strategies that were time-proven to always result in Domination? A discussion on that would be very interesting content to see.
@BoardGameNation
@BoardGameNation Жыл бұрын
That would be an interesting discussion. What I can say for certain is than when players bid for sides in the 1942.2 tournaments at GenCon, it typically end with the Allies getting an additional 6 IPCs worth material --- on topic of the changes that appear in the 3.0 setup! I am working a video that will focus on various Axis strategies for 1942.2. I hope to have that available in the coming months. In the meantime, this might help. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nM5ngr2HmN6YnGg.html Take a look at the Japanese play and how devastating a full attack on India can be. Thanks for watching!

When we finally get a chance to actually play a big game, we use one of these. If we are going to play Global or TI:4, we can use both tables pushed together. I like the attempt to make the game more balanced but I’m not a fan of how it impacts the historical accuracy (like moving a German bomber to Ukraine to start the game). The historical analogies are one of the best parts of the game.

Grat job again - Is there a way or do you have a video already of how to set up a private online game - When I try to set one up, people jump on before my family can. I'm sure it's obvious, but I haven't figured it out yet
@BoardGameNation
@BoardGameNation 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! I had the same issue. This is one feature of 1942 Online that I wish were more intuitive. Here is how you do it: 1) Make sure you are "Friends" with everyone you want in the game. 2) Click 'Online'. Then, 'Create Custom Game'. This will open the game creation screen. 3) Assign yourself to whichever power/s you want to play. In the middle of the screen in white you will see "Game Privacy". The default is Public. Change it to Private. When you do, the button on the bottom right will change to "Invite Your Friends". 4) Now you should see a list of all your friends on the platform. You can invite as many people as you have powers remaining. After you have selected everyone you want to play with, hit "Send Invitations" 5) Here you get a pop-up window. Be careful here. Double check that everything correct and HIT THE 'X'. DO NOT hit LEAVE or MAKE PUBLIC. If you leave the game will be deleted and you will have to start all over. If you hit, 'Make Public' anyone can join the game. When your game is full, it will start automatically and everyone will get an email. If you want to invite one or two friends and then open the game up to the public, you can do that too. Once your fellow Generals have joined the game, go back to the pop up window and click 'Make Public' and you'll pick up some players. Again, once the game is full it should start up automatically. I hope this helps, let me know if you have any issues! Good hunting!

The starting units should reflect raw historical data so a unit in the game reflects the real unit aggregate. Say 1 unit = 300 combat aircraft that a given nation has access too in the starting month of 1942 so removing a sub or adding a destroy for 'balance' reason is not a good idea Larry Harris, it is simply a Gamist balancing of the game, not an accurate reflection which the game should strive at least initially as a foundation for 'starting units'.

After playing a game of 1942 as is yesterday, I can see where the imbalance is. On germany's first turn I was able to take russia's capitol which was very detrimental for the rest of the game. Sure the russians got it back on their next turn miraculously, but in the end, the capitol ended up being captured ny germany yet again. I feel germany's borders are way to close to russia's capitol. Plus in sea zone 7 I didn't even use planes to sink the transport and cruiser that was in sea zone 7. I used the 2 subs in seazone 5 in suprise attacks. Easy victory for germany. Also what's the whole point in building industrial complexes when they can't be completely destroyed and rebuilt elsewhere? I counted when set up was done and I counted 10 of the 12 already used, leaving only 2 up for grabs. My opinion, industrial complexes should be destructible so they can be built elsewhere, or they should have printed the set up complexes on the board since they can't be removed anyway

Nice video! I do have a small nit-pick, though. Your "origin story" for this variant (and it is a variant, not a "3rd edition") is a bit inaccurate. Greg Smorey and his people did come to Larry Harris with many good suggestions for balancing the game. However, Larry came up with the setup changes himself and had them test them. He didn't simply "bless" their ideas, as you suggest. They did have quite a few suggestions, but the final design was all Larry. Regards, Kevin "Krieghund" Chapman

I always play this mode when playing allies. If Sea zone 7 fleet survives, I get to attack Norway. Most of the time, I'll use the extra infantry to attack east indies just to steal the income for a turn or two. Otherwise, you have a nice stack of meatshields to protect your tanks for an Asia offensive. This mode also makes it more likely for USA to take Algeria on turn 1, especially if Germany botched a turn 1 attack on Egypt.
