I finished up with the 'box of suspension" parts that I had on hand with the removal and install of TRW inner and outer tie rods. I hope to get an alignment in the next few days so I can report on driving feel.

Thanks so much Martin. Hope you and your family are well down under. We are finally getting some good rain this past week and when I flew into Phoenix this afternoon it was still raining. I drove back to school with Jack and flew home. Supposed to snow on Tuesday!

Your mechanic skill are like a doctor. Everything is well thought out and executed. And, you have better tools than I do. The pass through sockets and I've never seen the green thing. Counting the turns to reset allighnment was a good idea. I've counted the expossed threads before, to get it close. But then, I wonder if the total number of threads is the same from the old to new part. And yea, those clamps are a pain. I recently used a screw type clamp on a Cayenne for the inner tie rod. Only difference I can see is space due to the screw type having that larger peice sticking out. I've got some news for you but it's only 99% in the bag and having delays. But soon, I hope. Hope your enjoying your trip.

Thank you Bob, you are too kind. I was pleased that it went well and now that I am back I hope to get the alignment done so I can start enjoying the car again. It will be interesting to see how off the alignment ends up. :) I am excited for the news!!!! Talk to you soon.

My recently purchased 996 C4S had a r/h drivers side, I'm in the UK, suspension knock when warm, also the front wheels appeared to move around a little. The dealer I got it from could not find anything wrong, to be sure they replaced the inner track rod, outer track rod and tuning fork. It has stopped the noise and has transformed the steering. Clearly even a little wear can cause a problem on a 911.

Hi Rick what size jubilee clamps did you use to replace the Porsche ones? I’m doing this job in the next few days so might as well have some ready.

David, I honestly do not remember the size..sorry about that. I took one of the old ones to the hardware store and picked out one that was close. Hope the job goes well for you!

I'm finding this 2 years after you posted it. How did the hose clamps work out on the inner boots? Any issues?

They actually worked great. No issues during the time I still owned the car.

Did you get a complete kit? Inner and outer? If so from where? Did you have issues to start? Shaking steering wheel?
@AZdroptop
@AZdroptop 2 жыл бұрын
Here is a link to the kit I ordered. It included control arms as well. I was having a low speed clunking sound up front that ended up being the control arms and not the tie rods, but there was was wear on the tie rods so I am glad I did them as well. No steering issues at all. www.fcpeuro.com/products/porsche-suspension-kit-911-boxster-trw-997kit1#description LInk to control arm video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/brqFZNBesrHVXZs.html

Nice job Rick! It helps significantly when you have the proper tools to complete the job. Hope that cures the handling issue you have been experiencing. Sounds like that should fix the problem! Are you glad your not a full time Porsche mechanic at a dealership or shop somewhere?

Thank you Dave! It is always the little things that are a pain when doing this kind of stuff....most of it is do to me really not knowing what I am doing. Ha ha. I would be a Porsche Mechanic just so I could drive all of the cars. :)

Rick Quick Question, If I were to put my 996 on my "Quick Jack" lift and then remove the plastic underbody cladding. could I access and then remove my inner tie road ends with an open end wrench from underneath versus the special tool you used from the side ?? Thanks for posting theses video's you have no idea how helpful these video's are for those of us who are Highly motivated to work on our cars, but not well informed on just how to do it without mucking it up:) Mike
@AZdroptop
@AZdroptop 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Mike, you are very kind. I do not think that is possible honestly. Pretty much no room for access under there. I suppose it is possible to do this job with out the tie rod tool, but I have no idea how you could do it. I am definitely not an expert, but I just don't see how it could be done. Best of luck and thank you again.

@@AZdroptop Thanks for responding. I have a 2003 carrera coupe and have all of the same parts sitting on my garage shelf that you just replaced, but need to lock down a shop that will align it after I'm done before I start, plus I need to replace shocks/struts on all 4 corners as the car has over 90K and after looking through all of the original owners receipts I cannot find any proof of suspension work. Thanks again, I live just south of Palm Springs, so My summers are going to be similar to yours. As this will be my first summer with this car, looking forward to seeing how it handles the 110 plus summer days plus watching and learning from any summer prep you do to your 996. Be Safe

My pleasure Mike, the job really isn't bad at all other than those darn clamps. :) I really should do shocks and struts myself as I am pretty sure mine are also original. Best of luck with the work and let me know how it goes for you. As far as summer and the 996 goes mine has done great. When I did the IMS, clutch etc. my mechanic put in a new thermostat and it has been smooth so far. The AC is also pretty stellar.

@@AZdroptop Bought this car from original owner in November 2020. Retired Navy Pilot living over in Mission Beach. He used it as a daily driver and had a phone book size folder with every receipt and record from service and maintenance from the day he bought it new from Hoehn Porsche in Carlsbad. Like i had said not a single receipt for any suspension replacement parts. I replaced the IMS, Clutch, pressure plate and air oil separator about the first month after I bought it. This is my Project/ Something to work on while retired car):) Not going to track it, just a nice reliable weekend cruiser with an occasional trip up into the mountains around San Diego. My last project car was a 73 Mercedes 450 SLC so no experience with the Porsche Brand. But so far, Parts are more plentiful and surprisingly less expensive than the old Merc. So any tips or helpful hints you can pass along will be GRATEFULLY accepted. Thanks again for making these videos. Vidoes like your are my visual training guides Cheers

Your video doesn't mention the sealing ring under the boot -- Porsche part 997 347 373 00. (And #4 in the diagram you show at 12:50) Did you remove the old one? Replace it? Leave it off? Not worth it? How does it mount?
@AZdroptop
@AZdroptop 2 жыл бұрын
It has been awhile now Mike, but I believe that #4 is not part of the tie rod kit, but part of the rack and piñon. I could be wrong, but I do not remember having to deal with that part specifically. Sorry I can not be more helpful.

@@AZdroptop Thanks! It *is* included in the TRW kit that I ordered; see part "TRW JAR1013KT1" at FCPEuro, for example. I think it just goes over the end of the rack, under the area of the boot where the clamp attaches. I'll have a look at it in the coming week, if the parts arrive on time ...
@AZdroptop
@AZdroptop 2 жыл бұрын
Oh cool. Mine must have had it as well and I am just not remembering it. My guess is since I didn't mention it in the video it must be pretty straightforward. I generally try to mention anything odd or unusual. Sorry for my confusion and best of luck on the install. It really wasn't bad at all other than the OEM clamps.
