Over 60 years ago, B52s would occasionally do touch and goes at Fallon NAS, now the Top Gun school. They would circle the valley at low altitude, hitting the runway maybe every 15 minutes. My grandmother and I would drive out and park on a friend's property immediately west of the end of the 12,000 foot runway, just to experience the racket as they went over at no more than 200 feet altitude on takeoff power. Not for the faint of heart....I wish I could remember the local livestock's reaction.

Just think, if the Wright Bros. could see this, today, they would likely fall over. Their project has shot us into the futuristic way we now travel. How on EARTH could this weight be thrust into the skies? It seems impossible. Remarkable, truly.

The big Boeing B-52 Stratofortress is so impressive to watch taking off and landing as well as in flight. I recall reading many years ago that the pilots nicknamed them the “BUF” for the “Big Ugly Fellow”. In my eyes though, they are a thing of beauty and power.

Robert Sparkes : You are actually a little older than the B-52. Well, actually, maybe not. It depends on when they were first built. They first flew in April of 1952, just four months before I was born. I don't know when the first B-52 was actually built, but they first flew in April of 1952, and I was born in August, 1952. The planes are much older than the people who fly them.

If you look closely at where the wing meet the fuselage through the wingtips, the leading edge of the wing is at a fixed angle up, probably for improved lift since the B-52s lack of rotation at takeoff.

3:00 oh! I've never seen that before on a plane! The B-52's wings have wheels and stork-like legs holding them up from scraping the ground, then when it's taking off and in flight, the wings are hoisted up by the flow of air over the wings, that's so cool!

C-141s, 133s, 124s were used to transport them to NAM. After the Cobras were done we were extended to fly out a million tons of ammunition as I recall. I was an avionics tech supporting all the transports which came from all over the states. On the flight line all day by the SAC 52s, 135s and the U-2s. Elephant walks and U-2 Takeoffs up close. 💯👌. A lot of fuel stored in the wings, as well as the mains in the Fuselage. Thus it makes the the wings and the aircraft very heavy. This makes the aircraft as a whole sit closer to the ground and the wings sag with the additional weight during taxi and takeoff. That is one reason the wing wheels are there. I worked B52s while in the USAF. It truly is an incredible aircraft.
