Superb discussion as always. One thing you might have missed is the ‘ frustration’ part. Children in engineering and medical institutes are under immense pressure( I am talking about India) . Some of them don’t even want to be there, so they gotta find outlets to blow off steam. You can smoke,snort and drink to relax, but they still vent their frustration on juniors or freshmen because it helps them feel powerful in an otherwise oppressive environment

well I don't think there's a middle ground for bullying being even a bit of motivation for anyone in life. I have seen kids starting from calling weird names and no one complaining about this to worst. So, i don't in any way think bullying makes anyone tough. But I do think kids these days need to be disciplined and taught from childhood from their parents and teacher.

A big part of my childhood became hell. they tried to turn a sensible person into psychopath . I only become strong due to my father . He motivated me and gave me power . I would not give those mother fuckers even 1% credit of success or strength. I was one step ahead from becoming Joker . But I became batman eventually .😂😂 So , yes you are right . God bless you 😊😊

Ragging is the term used for bullying in Indian colleges. It can be hazing rituals or just a derogatory pecking order... it's a step above bullying because it's expected and accepted as the norm. Except in most places it's completely unheard of now. I've never faced it. However it's still there in some engineering and medical college hostels.

I disagree with you on this one. I get that the world is a bully, but nobody gave them the responsibility to teach him something or so-called 'make him ready for the big, bad world' in the form of torture. That's just how they try to justify it. Bullies get pleasure out of violence. That's it.

@@deepbanerjee4290 There's nothing called light hearted ragging. Ragging is ragging whatever it's intensity is. If you're made fun off but in a casual way and occasionally and no one means in harm towards you then that's fine and that makes you tough to as you can be resilient to be made fun off or ridiculed sometime. But ragging is always bad however you see it.

Toxic masculinity is really the worst. Especially in our times. As a child, I was exposed to continuous bullying for 8 years and then there were a good two years when I made friends and I didn't get bullied as much. But, again after that I was bullied much severely for two years. All of this has really fucked my mental sanity up though I didn't realise it then but now I can feel how it had such far reaching consequences on my life. My therapist helped me a lot to realise the roots of my mental health being not right. I disagree with you Jaby when you say moderate bullying is okay. Absolutely not. This very concept that someone needs to authoritatively dictate how should someone grow up or "man up", (speaking for men) needs to go. It should not be something people need to put up with however mild it may seem. A very relevant short. I liked it. It's almost impossible to forgive someone who provoked someone to an extent where he killed himself.

@@adityaanantharaman7963 Thanks man. I'm doing okay otherwise but my incidents really shaped me in a way I didn't realise sooner. Childhood scars stay for life and you can't do much about it. It's tragic.

My 17 year old cousin brother hung himself in his house on the day when he was supposed to be visiting my house he developed depression due to ragging in his college he also used to write a diary in which he wrote everything and before killing himself he burned that diary also and worst part is his mom took him down from the ceiling

I concur with Lauren here. The bully does it for sadistic pleasure whereas parents, teachers, mentors etc. are tough because they ultimately want you to succeed. While I completely agree that one sometimes needs to be tough with kids, I believe bullying is totally wrong and should be severely dealt with.

My childhood friend's brother committed suicide recently because of his bad marriage life. He hung himself in his wife's clinic . His wife is a dentist. He also has a daughter who is just 2 year old. It was very shocking. Now a days marriages in India are not sustainable. 😞

@@saanlaaraaa Well, think of it this way, when he could not even think of his 2 year old, what mental torture he must have been going through inside. I feel sorry for wife and daughter but blaming the victim of depression is not right. They have been undergoing much more than you or me can imagine. Killing oneself is not easy and that would have been the last resort to end his pain

Its true ragging does passdown as hateful and vengeance ultimately culminating to these situations. College seniors pass it down to extent that in some very prestigious colleges its become like a dangerous cult rituals. I had to fight it and i chose a dangerous way to fight. I entered the fight with intent and rage of kill or be killed that kind of scared them off and for me it worked. I think fighting back to it showing some spine i needed even if you are weak, its to find your own way to fight bcoz its needed further in life so that youre not being taken advantage or politically or professionally opressed . So i totally agree with JABY(Anthony).

I agree with Jaby about a little bit of toughness being fine. The line should be there as short-term stress is important and u should let kids manage it on their own so that they can learn basic problem-solving skills. but in long term, some action needs to take! dr. mike explains it in the best way so u can check that out...
