This story reminded me of my father so much. I never really cared about what I wore as a kid, but I remember my first day of high school, an older kid laughed at my shoes, I told my dad about it and begged him to buy me a pair with an "Air Bubble" brand, my dad told me brand name does not equal quality, but he took me to the shoe store and we looked around. I saw this magnificent pair for $300, now understand that I was 12, and we could usually buy several shoes for the family for the price of those. I pleaded with dad, to let me have them, he was hesitant, but he bought them anyway. So , next day I went to school and felt 11 foot tall and invincible, had confidence to talk to any girl, and even began to display my basketball ability, that I was previously too shy to try. For the next few weeks I felt like a king. Sure enough, that same kid came by, he saw them and was so jealous, I felt so much pride I would walk by him at lunch just to show them off. About 3 weeks after I got them, I was showing off playing basketball when I heard a pop, and the entire bottom of my shoe had collapsed, the air bubble exploded, shattered into as many pieces as my heart was when I looked at the girl I like laughing at me. When I got home I asked mum to get dad to buy me another pair, she told me they couldn't right now, dad had to work extra shifts for a few weeks to make up the money I spent on the shoes. I was shattered again. My dad, my brilliant dad, had to work in the heat on the weekends, when he should be relaxing, just to buy me a stupid pair of shoes, that were no better than a $50 pair. I felt so shallow and hollow. When dad came home late that night, I stayed up to see him, I showed him my shoes, the first thing he said was he would take me to get another pair the next week, he, oh man, he was the best...I told him no thanks, I like these. I wore those broken shoes for the next 3 months, I deserved to walk in pain, I never forgot that. I don't think I ever paid dad back for that, I know he would have worked himself even harder to get me another pair without hesitation, I love him very much, I miss him so much. Throughout my childhood I always had the best, and looking back now, he always had generic shoes, and even wore some of my jackets on cold days, he sacrificed himself to give me more than he had, he was an amazing dad. It was his birthday last weekend, 21st Feb, first birthday since he departed, I bought a pair of fancy shoes for him, I put them in a box under his bed, I love you buddy, I love you. I owe you everything. Thank you as well Lester, for bringing back such a special memory.

Oh “British Knight” shoes....... I begged and begged for a pair! My parents would not spend the money for a pair BUT my paw paw would! He bought me a pair and I wore them out! They had holes in the soles and my mother finally threw them out when I wasn’t around. Thanks for bringing back that memory!

British Knights were the 1st name brand shoes I ever owned. We didn’t have the $ for brand new clothes let alone name brand. My aunt visited us from Cali & bought me a pair. I always told my kids when they were in school that if the kids at school picked their friends by the labels they wore on their backs, they didnt need fake friends. Yrs later my daughter in her late 30s went to a outdoor flee market. Ran across a booth the lady had a bunch of used purses hanging. Two were Mks my daughter purchased one for $80. Brought it home, son checked it out and said mom its real. She called a friend and told her of the find, the next day back to the flee market and purchased the 2nd MKs. Both girls were happy w their flee market finds. Happy that all the babies big and small along with mom and dad made it thru the frigid spell

I love her spunky behavior ♥️ and as far as that girl you bought that purse for, she was a high maintenance snob if you were to ask me! I never knew about brand names until some of my friends would talk about them. I grew up poor but didn’t think we were poor lol we shopped at yard sales and the navy exchange and lower income retail stores...my mom also sewed. I never thought about name brand clothes, I was always kinda of eccentric anyways so I really didn’t care lol and I am still like that...have 20 year old jeans and shop in thrift stores...my money goes to my animals and my yard for flowers and such...I drive a 2007 year vehicle...it’s what’s in your heart ♥️ Lester...you have a very big heart and so does Jamie! Back during my school days, the in thing was to have a navy blue Pea Coat. I didn't have a coat at all for two winters and in 10th grade a boy I was dating (who I eventually married) said he would buy me a winter coat for Christmas. I was thrilled when I went downtown to buy the Pea Coat. They were so popular that were completely sold out. I got a navy blue coat that day, but I was just as happy with it because it kept me warm. I laugh now that I lived through the Pea Coat trauma of my teen years, but it was the thought that counted. That coat embraced me with the best warm hug of my life.
