@@sakura5427 well, what i did, is i help her in my arm, and i’d move my arm down, not fast she’s fall off, but fast enough she’s have to flap her wings, but a lot of the time, they’ll grasp that on there own. mine has actually flown away now, and i’ve seen her now and again, miss her so much but i know she’s doing great. :)) xx

It's easy to solve the calcium problem, feed them mozzarella cheese along with the mince. They absolutely love lamb mince, followed by beef, then pork not so much, but surprisingly they turn their nose up at kangaroo mince. We've raised two very healthy babies where mum and dad took mince and cheese from birth to the nest. Now the whole family of four are at our back door daily!

@@Nudiescorner The two young magpies (female for sure) have really become characters of their own now. While waiting for food they will sometimes squabble to the point of nasty. There's no "top dog" between them yet. One is so friendly she will take food from my hand, the other is a real sook and has a limit of one metre from me still. She cries to her mum who will still pick up mince from the plate and feed her like she still a nestling. I hope mum and dad don't breed this year, four squawking magpies early in the morning is more than enough.

Everyone says feed them mince, but vets universally say it's risky because of the ability of the meat sicking to their beaks, causing them to rot away-- and they're not wrong. If you can make the mince more wet than sticky, that helps, personally, deli meats are the way to go for me, but if they're used to you feeding them something, they don't like it when you change the menu. My magpie families have been LOVING mortadella ever since I moved in to my house, so much so that they even turn their beaks up to ham, or anything else I offer. Except cheese. That's like crack to 'em. I do miss the old patriarch who used to come sit with me when the family was feeding, sadly he passed a couple winters ago, but the rest of the family continues visit to scratch up my lawn and doormats. Love 'em!
@philxray666
@philxray666 3 жыл бұрын
@@Booyaka9000 Yeah I've only recently heard the same advice regarding the mince meat sticking to their beaks. That's the last thing I want to happen to them. Hubby (the adult male) already had a deformed/broken beak before we met him. The top beak is two centimetres shorter than the bottom beak. He's funny when eating because he can only pick up the food by twisting his head sideways and sort of scooping it up into his mouth. Maybe he was fed mince when young by others. He's always been the friendly one, willingly feeding from our hands. Wifey (mum) has always been cautious of us. Closest she will get is 1.5 metres. Mandy (daughter A) is just like dad feeding from our hand, Mindy (daughter B) is similar to mum but her safe distance is less, around one metre from us. This has never changed for any of them, that distance apart from us seems programmed into their minds. I did read somewhere that any processed food was bad for them, mettwurst, pepperoni, ham even, so we've always avoided that. Can't at all remember why though! Time we started moistening the mince as you suggest. Thanks.

My placid dog gets dive bombed in the back yard all the time by peewees and willy wagtails. She just ignores and puts up with it. She looks to me for help sometimes. No harm done to either parties. The Willy Wagtails sometimes just stay on her neck and flutter so she looks like she has little wings. So funny to see.

You can actually buy insectivore mix online ; loads of pet stores sell it and you can mix it up with a teeny bit of mince , a bit of cheese for calcium ( for people worried about the fat in cheese remember moths and caterpillars which magpies love are full of fat !) Our magpies also like a little uncooked rice and uncooked oats....it is a myth that birds can't eat uncooked rice ; Rice is simply the seed of a grass species and birds all over the world eat it.

Many bird species will swoop if their nesting zone is breached. Less than 10% of magpies swoop and that's only for the 4 weeks that they have hatchings and nestings in the nest (about 4 weeks). Magpies have a reputation because of media bias/sensationalism and also because they a bit larger than many of the species that swoop. They are excellent parents and arguably the most skilled, intelligent and sociable (with each other and with people outside of breeding season) songbirds in the world.
