My mom is SO cute and she brought some baby albums along so I’ve included some baby pics, too. Thumbs up for my mom, Sandi!!

Sandi Maker you did a great job. My oldest nephew who is now in his 40s had that type of swing when he was a baby. I remember the hand crank but I also remember how if he didn't fall asleep quick enough would get startled by winding the crank again and he would start crying. I have twin great niece and nephews who had the current swings..no crank, easy gliding swing and no hard plastic piece that you have to fight when you put baby in or take them out. Congratulations to the new parents and Gramm to be.

Girl, you don't need all this junk. Trust me, we have six kids and we managed just fine without all of this stuff. You'll regret wasting your money on it. You're going to be a fabulous mum without all these gadgets - just like your mum. A simple bassinet like the one you had will be more than fine. As for baby monitors, rather than the fancy camera/phone type ones, I used one with an apnoea alarm on it for our youngest. She was seven weeks early and it was such a relief to know if she forgot to breathe we would know instantly. Also, if/when you decide to use formula it takes only minutes to prepare several bottles with water and you can get little plastic powder dispenser pots that you can use to divide the powder into the correct amounts and then you just pour it in and shake the bottle when it's time to feed. All the money you save not buying all these fancy gadgets that women have managed without since the dawn of time, can go toward your daughter's college fund or into a savings account for her. I know these gadgets seem exciting, but they really are designed to con parents out of money that they really don't need to spend. I never regretted not having any of this stuff, but I have friends who regretted buying it.

I agree..my daughter is pregnant with #5 and has a swing & bouncer and that's it! Mixes her own formula..only takes a min. Baby sleeps down stairs during the day..gets used to the noise of the kids and TV..at night goes upstairs with her in a little playyard until a year old then gets a full size crib and moved in with one of the other kids!

Congratulations, Melissa and Chad! When I first found out you were pregnant, I immediately told my 2 sisters. We all love your channel and you inspire us to keep our homes cleaner and tidier. I am so excited for you to start sharing all things kid. I actually use an old school, non visual baby monitor with my 17 month old. Works great for us. I also used a hand me down crank swing with my first baby, nine years ago. 🙀 I would love a new phone for my husband. We have never used any Android phones and we would love to try them out. My husband has an iPhone 5 and it seems to glitch so much anymore. As a stay at home mom and homeschooler I devote my time to my family and my husband is the only breadwinner. He has sacrificed a lot for us and it would be awesome to give him something that’s actually new.

Parents in 1982 didn't know any different but did the best they could with what they had at the time and they were just trying to be the best loving and responsible parents they could be. I was born in 1982 as well and my Dad said that I had all the best baby paraphernalia a baby could have at the time even if it didn't look like much compared to all the cool baby gadgets new parents have to choose from today.

I agree with your mom. My son was also born in 1982. He had the swing'omatic, the door way jolly jumper, no bassinet needed, you'll have a crib. Let that baby cry and make noise, they are allowed to, I'm sure they take after parents if they like to 'talk' or not. Baby formula is stupid easy to make from powder, no need for a 'coffee' style maker. If you want something easier, use the tins of formula. Do not use that straight jacket!!! I never had a baby monitor, as I lived in an apartment. I managed as a single mum without all this Tech, and saved a ton of money which could be spent on more important things. (I even used cloth diapers which I washed myself!!!)

I had my oldest daughter in 88. I had her crib and this old fashion bassinet that they used to put babies in in the car. I had a lamb skin rug to lay her on. As she got older I had a johny jump up and like your mom, I wish I had an adult one! And this thing called a walker, the baby sat in a little seat and could push herself around. My mom did cloth diapers and for me it was disposable all the way. I also breast fed, so no bottles. The biggest and most important thing I got was a strap on baby carrier. The one I had was made by snuggly and it let me clean, grocery shop and all that. I loved it so much. Congrats! Love your videos and I think your mom was great on the video! A natural.

I love you videos and all the updates on the new baby. I also have my 1st grandson coming Dec 13th!!!! I'm 62 so I would say it is about time. Your mom talked about the swing, well that was the ONLY way I got my shower when my daughter was a baby. I would have to put her in the swing in the bathroom while I showered for work, otherwise it was cry, cry, cry. It was a life saver. As far as the tech upgrade------I use a tracfone and honestly it's ok for emergency when it works so I would say it is time for an upgrade. Keep up the videos, and I can't wait to see you daughter.

Loved this video! I have 3 kiddos and I just wanted to mention, that all I used from your list was a bassinet and formula. Sometimes as a first time mom, you think you may need all sorts of stuff, but really and truly you don't. If we lived in a two story house I could understand the use a baby monitor but I have never owned one. The bassinet that we had was not technical in any way. It's amazing how technical things are these days!

Melissa, my babies loved their swing. The swings today may play nice music etc. but the swinging is the same and I recommend getting one. Swaddling is nice for babies but I guess I'm old school and I always heard my babies, which is how I learned to identify their happy sounds from unhappy sounds. Things are so technical today, you need to,use what is best for you and enjoy your little girl. I need a cell phone upgrade because I live in Upstate NY boonies and we just recently got a cell phone tower and my phone actually works at home. Time to upgrade!

What a great video! A great idea behind it. The differences. And it's true, the more sound you give your baby the chances they won't be able to fall asleep under normal circumstances. I just don't like white noise, I'm not sure about it. I personally would be checking with a skilled professional to see if there is any documentation on after effects of using white noise or any back ground noise on a baby. But that's just my opion❤It was so nice to see your Mom. Lots of things to think about, huh? Good luck💟💟💟

Awe your mom is adorable! She reminds me of my mom! Regarding that thing that makes them sleep and simulate the womb; sometimes its good to let a baby cry it out it tires them, and it also is good for their lungs and development. Technology is nice, but sometimes the good ol' fashion way is best. Human interaction is always more important. Still, the technology we have these days so you can check on your baby well not at home is so amazing!

You know each baby is different so many like the swing, many don't. As far as all the gadgets, do your research but you can always send out hubby to get what you need once baby arrives. For us a play yard has always been our lifesaver and we've used the bassinet and changing table that came with it. We used it also going overseas. A breast pump is something that we didn't have with our first 1 but learned the hard way and with the 2nd one. You will learn a lot as you go. Trust your mommy instincts Melissa. You'll be great at it.

love your mom!!! u guys have the same smile!!!! im also from 1982 with my first girl due in late December so i feel the 'pain' choosing what is too much tech or a waste of money... i like the idea of the swing that you can take down and it becomes a bouncer (i got it for.my baby shower)... and most things that have more than one prurpose or that ill be able to use for a long time... the bottle 'kerug" thing i think it's a bit much lol and the bassinet that rocks your baby too... what happens when you go away and u cant bring it or later on having to deal with having to constantly rock your baby to sleep once they outgrow the bassinet... i think whatever u get ur baby used to at the beginning is whats going to set the tone to what you will have to do later. so the simple-er the better... at least thats my plan... kitchen sink baths for the first few months, not too much quiet or white noise so she will be able to fall sleep anywhere. room temperature water if im doing formula etc... im sure you will be an amazing mom cus you are so relaxed and positive! the most and best advisenive gotten is 'go with your gut' cus God puts a little extra umph in it so we can do our thing 😉 re: the contest. i need a cell upgrade cus im about to have my first baby and i wanna get amazing pictures and videos in one place. my current phone is full...and 2 because the gps on my phone is very unreliable and i get lost all the time... indont wanna get lost or have to stop and reset my phone with a baby on board... my gps likes to make me go i circles lol.

I know I was laughing and wondering how much they over priced that, I just wore my kids in a baby carrier during the day (lost most of the baby fat that way, obviously only when I was at home... and not in the car) but yeah just a plain bassinet works and they're so thin that they'll fit right next to the bed, making it easy for the mom to check on them when needed.

Congrats on your precious new addition! It is interesting how technology changes over time. My daughter is only 8 1/2. Video monitors were available back then, but fairly new. I had only just switched from a flip phone to a smart phone right before my daughter was born, so I wasn't so tech "obsessed" by then. A video monitor seemed extravagant then, but I would totally buy one with a video and app if I were having a baby today! I do remember when my daughter moved out of our room (at 5 months old) I turned the monitor volume all the way up and put it as close to my head as possible so I could hear her breathing! I also used the monitor way past babyhood. I don't remember how long, but even after she switched to a toddler bed and could spend time playing alone in her room I loved being able to keep a close "ear" on her. One more thing, every baby is different...my daughter loved her swing and used it often - ours had a butterfly mobile with moving lights - and I usually left her in a swing when I dropped her off at daycare. BUT, some friends reported their children did not like using a swing. I could go on and on. Be blessed with your new little family. So happy for you!

Congratulations! It must be really exciting for you to be expecting your first baby, but it's probably a good idea to wait before buying a lot of the gadgets out there - for the first month or two most babies sleep a lot anyway, and you'll only discover what you really can't live without after a while, so you should concentrate on the essentials pre-baby. I really need a new phone because mine is acting up after 2 years of use and I don't know what I'll do if it dies on me.

Melissa Maker I would be so happy for a phone upgrade. I have always had an android phone and actually prefer them for several reasons. But, the one I have now is so old I can only use it for talk or text! I tell family and friends that my phone is not smart, just mildly intelligent! Loved seeing you with your mother! Thank you for sharing so much of yourself with us!

Haha! This was fin to watch. Your mummi is a sweetie:) I feel so dated. My son turns 5 in febuary and we dis mot have a ny tech at all and managed just fine! We did have a babymonitor with sound only, made our pen formula and babyfood. We had a stroller and a car seat and a baby bed.. Nothing else. I dont think you need all those gadgets. Still to this day our son has only two toys with sound, and he has a lot of toys.. He loves noise and makes all the sounds of his own!

Love your videos! Also, congrats on your baby girl!! I would love a new phone because mine is falling apart. We just had our own baby girl and can’t afford to get new phones. My phone has stopped recording sounds with videos. There are many moments I am missing of my daughter’s first life events that I would love to have to cherish forever. ❤️

Hi Melissa, I have had a Samsung Galaxy for 4 years now and I have been ready for an upgrade for a long, long time. Especially now, when I need a better camera to capture all the beautiful moments with my baby (BTW, congrats to you guys!). I hope the phone will come my way 😉👍👐

I love how common sense your mom is. I also never find old gear funny - there wouldn't be any new gear if it wasn't for the development before, and all new stuff eventually becomes old stuff. Not common sense and motherly love though, your mom is super sweet.

Love the baby comparisons. I'm going to be a first time grandma in May 2018. Even in the last 22 years so much has changed. I love the idea of the rocking bassinet. The only downfall really is that most of the baby stuff is barely used and out grown so fast. It was really fun to set up the baby's r us registry and look at all the new items. I could really use a tech upgrade. My current cell phone is older and has alot of issues. Battery life is pretty much non existent. I would love a new phone to take nice photos of the new baby. Thanks for all the informative videos and help keeping my home clean. I hope you have a future video on house prepping for a new baby. All the best to you and Chad. Also thanks for the recommendation of Ellie Lundquists channel. I keep sending my daughter all the links to her videos since her boys are young and she can see someone parenting in a more recent time.

Love your mom, she is adorable! I think all the tech is OTT! We have twin boys now 14 months. My only tech is/was video monitor (although not on my phone) & a formula machine. We didn't use swings & our bouncy seats didn't have vibration. We didn't use white noise, but that means they fall asleep a lot easier - almost anywhere. Personally I think they get hooked on noises or movements & then need it always - as a parent I'd rather not put myself through that. Oh & one item I wish I'd found earlier is the Zoli breathe - it's kinda disgusting, but a life saver!!!

I saw that bassinet you're talking about just before my second baby was born and as a mom, I was like "No Way!" Babies don't "just cry" you need to be vigilant and tech like that worries me that some parents get a little too complacent in passing on the responsibility of looking out for their babies.

Awesome video! Just so you know, I just had my third baby last year. With the first baby, almost 10 years ago, I felt I had to have all the things. I had the diaper genie. I had the video baby monitor. I had a bassinet and then a crib. I've found that a lot of stuff, you don't need. With the latest, we don't have a monitor and the baby now sleeps in a crib in the other room and we can hear her just fine. Yeah, if you're breastfeeding, keeping baby in a bassinet in your room for the first couple of months is great. Something I really suggest is a Moby wrap. I love that thing. My baby would be snuggled against me and would sleep while I took care of the older kids or cleaned house, cooked dinner, etc. I even took her on trips with the cubscouts for my oldest and she was as happy as she could be snuggled in her wrap. Don't worry too much about needing all the baby things though. You're going to do great with whatever you have.

Hey Melissa, this was a great video!! ❤ I love how you and your mom compared the tools and techniques of when you were born vs today 😊 xx I would love to win the Asus zenfone 4 because my phone currently is a very very old Samsung Galaxy mini (I believe). This thing is tiny and it hurts my hands while I'm on it! 😕😕😕 AND (icing on top of the cake), my phone fell one time and is now held together with an elastic rubber band cause the back does not go back on properly 😑😑😑 That is why I would LOVE to win the Asus zenfone 4!! Love the content that you make Melissa, and I hope we do get to see more baby stuff soon!! 😊 xx

My mom had the crank swing too, it’s amazing how much has changed! Also we were all fed an old fashioned canned milk recipe, no formula. And monitors were not necessary, my mom still doesn’t think so. No phone upgrade for me, I’m pretty happy with my iPhone :)

if you are determent to do it you will do it! Get help if you have problems! There are certificate professionals out there that can help you and get you through any problem you might have! www.ilca.org/main/why-ibclc/ibclc check it out. Take it from a mom in Greece who gave birth in fancy private hospital where no one had a clue how to help me when baby couldn't latch and I was so desperate trying and crying when a certified IBCLC professional that helped a friend of mine came along, I am still breastfeeding my 20-month old daughter and it is really the best thing I have ever done in my life! Kisses from Greece, I have been watching your channel for years and putting into practice your tips and advice. I hope my advice will be useful to you in the beginning of the wonderful journey! p.s. this is an amazing website of a Greek pediatrician / expert on breastfeeding, unfortunately there is not much of the context in English pediatros-thes.gr/en/for-parents/diatrofi/%CE%B1%CF%80%CE%BF%CE%BA%CE%BB%CE%B5%CE%B9%CF%83%CF%84%CE%B9%CE%BA%CF%8C%CF%82-%CE%B8%CE%B7%CE%BB%CE%B1%CF%83%CE%BC%CF%8C%CF%82-%CE%BA%CE%B1%CE%B9-%CF%80%CF%81%CE%BF%CF%84%CE%AF%CE%BC%CE%B7%CF%83/

It also ensures you eat properly, to give baby good nutrition. I breast fed for 7 months, but it was not easy for me. I cried every time. That painful 'let down' feeling you get the first few times you breast feed, I had that every single time. I was happy for formula, but wanted to give my son a good nutritional start. The pain we put up with for our kids!

Hi chick256, out of curiosity... Did you get some support from some certified on breastfeeding health professional? I know breastfeeding can be painful for a number of reasons, but I also know that there is solution to all those reasons!
@mochi_and_me

Roudiger1983 yes I went to the Laleche League, and their solution was to just to continue breast feeding. That was also their solution when I told them my nipple was hanging off due to my son biting it. Needless to say I never called again for help. Dr was male and wasn't very helpful. That's why I only lasted 7 months, as soon as I was visiting my mum in England I got her to bottle feed him and I dried up almost instantly. My body knew it had dealt with enough!

I love your mom, Sandy, she did a great job in the video :). proud of her. I agree with her I have a daughter your age and we lived without all the technology and raised pretty wonderful kids. The swing is the one item that I'd change the wind up would wake up my kids when it stopped and sometimes the noise from winding it up scared them awake :(. I'd love the cell phone upgrade for my sister who is struggling financially it would allow us more connection time :)

Suggestions only as you can do what you want/need: Get a swing that you can use for more than 3 months. Bumbos are not worth it as they start to use them around 3 mos and they don't fit in them for long. When it comes to sleepwear, get the zipper ones instead of snaps as they will save you time esp when you are tired and changing in the middle of the night. Instead of a bassinet, get a pack and play that has one and then you can use it for the time you need it as well as use the pack n play when you travel. Ours even has a changing station that connects to the PNP so we did not need a changing table. We never bought a baby bed, but used the PNP until they were ready for their big kid beds and we have guard rails for them to prevent falling out. Go to 2nd hand stores for a lot of your items. Since you have more than 1 floor, I do suggest getting the baby monitor, but be careful as hackers have been known to get access to the monitors and can view your child. We never connected the monitor online and I used it when I needed to when I was on a different floor. Be careful with electronics as they say to avoid using them when you are pregnant so this would be the same after they are born too - www.mamanatural.com/emf-exposure/ Hope these help. Again these are only suggestions that we have learned with our 2 (soon to be 3) kids.

Hi Melissa...if you ask me..I would say...u don't need the formula dispenser. It doesn't take much time to make one.. my daughter is 8months old and we haven't even felt the need for this. A simple bassinet will do.. whatever these new tech gadgets provide cannot bring in the bonding between you and your baby while rocking her back to sleep. Ur heartbeat is more than enough to help sooth her in case she is just uncomfortable.. it is difficult only in the first 2-3 months..then things will start coming back to almost normal.. Good luck to both of you..
