Great reaction. 'Doki Doki Morning' was their very first song. They recorded it at the end of October 2010 (Su was 12, Yui and Moa were 11) and debuted on stage with it at the end of November 2010. The video was recorded and released in (I think) October 2011, so Su was 13, Yui and Moa were 12. Doki Doki is onomatopoeic for a fast or excited heart beat, so the song is about waking up and rushing to get ready for an exciting day ahead, meeting their friends at school and maybe having a party afterwards. It covers all the usual metal themes like which lip gloss to put on, getting their fringe (bangs) straight and so on. 😉 Well spotted on the little pink animated skeleton (Mr Bones) dancing along with them ... there are actually 5 of them dotted round the room. You will have to look again now to see if you can find them. The girls were very pleased with themselves here because they taught the Babybones skeleton suited guys the choreography themselves.

In an old interview, Su-metal, the lead singer, mentions how the group originally wanted to make metal music that young girls could relate to. For example, their earlier songs like this one "Doki Doki Morning" was about getting waking up and getting ready, "Uki Uki Midnight" was about a late night snacking during a sleepover, and "Headbanger" was about a 15 year old girl going to her first metal concert. IN Japanese Doki Doki is mimicking the sound of a beating heart and loosely translated means "heart pounding" so the song is called "heart Pounding morning" it's a song about waking up in the morning getting ready for school putting on their makeup etc.. Ima Nanji means "what time is it?"

By the time Su Metal was 16yo they were doing huge concerts. She's just turned 13yo in this clip She's only 23years or so now and she's been singing for BABYMETAL for 10years. They were so brave facing huge crowds at such young ages. The song is just about girls getting ready for school. All their earlier stuff was relatable to girls to give girls their own stories and their own heavy band. Not many girls turned up in Japan but lots did in the west.

Watching you battle the smile time and time again was worth the like alone.

This was BM's first release. In the video Yui and Moa are 12 and Su is 13. Babymetal started as a sub-unit of a school themed teen idol group called Sakura Gakuin and Doki Doki Morning was first released on the Sakura Gakuin 2010 Nendo CD. So I suppose you could also say that this is Sakura Gakuin's Heavymetal Club. I sometimes wonder what SG's fan base thought of this metal content popping up between fairly standard J-pop songs. A couple of other songs off that CD were initially promoted and had videos, but Doki Doki Morning got some traction and after a year their agency, Amuse, made some money available for a video, but it was a small budget and the girls are wearing borrowed clothes and the "skeletons" are just black jump suits and white tape, look closely and you'll see the tape falling off. The band here isn't a band, it's just dancers miming and they are called "Babybones". At this early stage BM were still singing and dancing to backing tracks, like many idol groups, but their producer, Key Kobayashi would start to introduce the live Kami Band in 2012/13. They worked together intensely and did a few live festivals and concerts in Japan during 2013. This led to their breakout international performance at UK Sonisphere in 2014. Doki Doki Morning is a sentimental favorite with many fans, but doesn't get played much anymore because it's a very young song and BM are not young girls any more. FYI "doki doki" is a Japanese onomatopoeia phrase used to describe the excitement of a beating heart and the song is about getting ready for school and doing new things as a teen girls, but also has a couple of lines that puncture the trope of silly schoolgirls not knowing things, which is a bit of girl power so that theme was there right from the start.

Even with this one the live version is much better. The only MV I find to work better is Karate.

The Skeletons were BABY BONES. A FAKE BAND. Made up with models i think it was. They were binned after Su went Live and wasn't miming for their European Breakthrough?
