Babymetal might not be the most artistically viable or original band, but they bring something that the genre has been missing (and has kept it out of limelight): fun. Every period needs a metal band or subgenre that, despite its formulaic approach, can draw non-metalheads in. Babymetal is such a band. And for that, I salute them. Also: Megitsune is a fucking 10/10 tune.

+Spainkiller That is the case. They are original. There are tons of bands born every year and 90% of them sounds the same. The epic stage performance and absolute anti-metal singers (which paradoxically are metal as fuck) just make the whole experience to go to another level.

+Spainkiller I agree with you. I am glad that Babymetal has managed to bridge some sort of gap. I have some friends that are all about pop while I primarily listen to metal. I showed them Babymetal and they really got into it. I then showed them Ladybaby, which if you have not heard of them has the metal, pop and a huge Australian metalhead in a maid outfit dancing and doing metalvocals with 2 girls, and was able to get one of my friends more interested in the metal scene by a slow transition.

+Spainkiller 100% agree man. I'm happy to embrace them as part of the metal community. I love extreme metal as much as any other metalhead who has been listening for a while, but sometimes they take themselves too seriously. I always love it when bands like black dahlia murder and misery index recognize this and make fun of themselves a bit, taking it easy. Babymetal also seems to have a really good live show. In a similar way to gwar, they recognize that a concert can be more than a musical performance; it can be theater. I've been to enough metal shows to know that the mosh pit can be fun, but the bands are so busy playing their instruments that the performances tend to be limited to windmilling and jumping with some cheap pyrotechnics if we're lucky. Having the three girls separate from the actual band seems to solve that problem with a flair

I'm gonna start by saying I'm more of a music junkie than a metal head. BUT I am 41 and grew up on 80's Hip-Hop, Pop and Metal. The only metal albums I bought this year were the new Anthrax and Megadeth because of those 80's roots. However the first time I heard "Karate" by Babymetal, I was sold. I ran out, bought it and really enjoyed it. It kind of brought me back to the metal genre... Something I sort of abandoned during the early 90's. I'm discovering more bands lately (thanks to album reviews from Banger and other great KZfaq channels) and I can see myself adding some more metal albums to my collection this year with my usual mix of Hip-Hop, R&B and Pop.

Listening to this band is like a resume for many metal bands around the world mixed with J-pop culture. I personally found this album is really fun and it has a lot of positive energy. Well, some people said that they ripped off so many riffs and musical structure from other bands. That's true and that is what they are doing, paying a tribute to all the bands that they love (the word they refer to Kobametal and his agency, people who started all of this concept). You can tell from Akatsuki, Amore and No Rain, No Rainbow that they stole everything from X-Japan, The first part in Karate sounds like Evanesence and some nu-metal bands and many others. So, basically they don't have standard in every part of their music and that is their standard for not having standard, isn't it? Take a look how many bands from Japan that got famous around the world, say the biggest three that I know are X-Japan, L'arc en Ciel and Dir en Grey (I'm not going to mention the punk bands from Japan that really got famous around the world b'cos we are talking about metal and J-pop). But if you take a look deeper, this is the best way to introduce your country culture to the world and Babymetal made it more devastating compared to the big 3 from Japan. People are doing cosplay of the band, some people start to learn Japanese language to understand the lyrics better, even the die hard fans fly to Japan just to see their concert or to get limited merchandises and many other crazy stuff that the fans would do. See how effective this is? Sadly, it is true that the idea of this band is a business project, not a band in a first place, I would say, but we will see in the upcoming future because those three girls are talented in their own way. Suzuka has an astonishing vocal while Yui and Moa have their own cuteness in screaming and dancing. The Kami band has one of the strong points as well. So basically, this band offers you the whole package; from music, dancing, stage performance, the stage itself and last but not least is Japanese culture. *I've never seen teenager girls keep dancing while singing on stage without losing the grip or off the balance. In 5 - 10 years from now, those little kid will get their own names in the world for their talent especially the lead singer Suzuka. Cheers.

Dude, they could have started more as a bussiness project but now they are a metal band on their own. One can feel the energy flow through you when you hear their songs from the second álbum forward. They are maturing as a band and seem genuinely engaged emotionally with what they represent and the fame they achieved. I could go as far to say that clearly money is not the top motivation for this band. The producer is a true headbanger and wants to leave his contribution to the scene.

If cohesiveness is important to you in an album then, sure, you are probably not going to like it a whole lot. But that sort of scattershot approach is what BABYMETAL is all about and always HAVE been about. If they didn't have songs of many different types then they just wouldn't be BABYMETAL. Since you reposted the video i reposted my comment. :p

That sounds like just fanboying. Its not like they have been around long enough to be "all about" anything. They...as in Babymetal themselves, have little to no input in the actual music. Babymetal is produced, packaged and sold by the company. The girls just sing it. And im not trying to bash here...thats how its done in Japan and im a big Babymetal fan, but dont try to act as if its the girls themselves saying...this is what we are about...cause its not. The fact that they change styles so much is because in japan the album matters less than the single song. They want to throw a bunch of stuff at the wall and see what sticks. The first album did it, and the second album took it even further. Im hoping the third album finds its niche and stick to a certain style of sound...and hopefully allows the girls to have more influence over the music.

First of all i would like to say your "analysis" is really bad, you don't actually seem to know anything about how the Japanese music industry works. Anyway let's stick to BABYMETAL... BABYMETAL at the time i wrote this comment had been around for 5 and a half years and they had never had a consistent musical style. I stand by what i said. And hopefully they never will. Why would you want them to limit themselves to one style? We have enough bands that stick to one specific subgenre just fucking grinding out material without any ambition or creativity. BORING. What we need are more bands that approach things like BABYMETAL, with a sense of exploration, experimentation and daring.

This is a very mature, respectable review. I personally really dig the album and the group as a whole, but if you can't get behind j-pop vocals then it's totally understandable why you wouldn't be able to fully get behind the concept. Of course, the backing band absolutely has to be commended for their phenomenal work. Pretentious metal purists can call them trash all they want, but they're completely disregarding the amount of genuine talent and effort that goes into it. Even the girls themselves surely have to be subjected to some pretty tasking training to be able to have such an over the top stage presence.

Then why are you wasting your time with me instead of listening to this real music you speak of. You sound as if you have something to prove. Congrats, you have *good* taste (by your own discretion anyway). Thanks for giving me your blessing on what music I'm allowed to like, I was on pins and needles hoping you'd allow me the courtesy. I'm planning on getting professional help, as I was unaware of the fact that I enjoyed the group solely based upon the creepy notion of being attracted to young girls (I think you're projecting a bit here, honestly). Thank you for enlightening me. Perhaps one day I'll have good taste in music, just like you.

I think the passive-aggressive stance of saying "you can like this, but it's still shit" isn't genuine to the concept of acceptance. Because clearly there's an agenda in place to mock and de-humanize the people you're focusing your sights on. Which you've showcased numerous times already. And then you hide behind the wall of "It's just my opinion" as if it were a valid defense. And it would be, if you weren't so adamant to prove your superiority. I genuinely suggest decreasing your reliance on ad-hominem argumentation. Thanks for the kind words, I hope you have a good rest of your day as well.

Good review, but I think you maybe missed what they were trying to do with this record. This a concept album through and through - the jump from one style of metal to another is done with purpose. They are journeying through the world of rock and metal and blending each style with their approach in accordance with their overarching theme of togetherness or oneness. The idea is summed up quite literally in the final track "The One." I think it is meant to be cohesive thematically and deliberately not so in the sound of each track.

well because of the scattering they don't seem like a real band... and they are not and i guess it's okay. But this is kind stuff i take lightly, i can't really take a project like this seriously but it bothers me that many do take it seriously... I really wish they had actual stylistic changes album to album rather than having practically different genre or sub genre to each song in one record. But i think the rules are indeed different in Japan. Look at Dir En Grey! An actual band but they have covered so many genres over the years it blows my mind, but they did it between albums not songs... which is way more acceptable than having drastic changes in sound on one record...
@deaddoll1361
@deaddoll1361 6 жыл бұрын
Mark Priss So what do you think a "real band" is exactly? Is four guys playing in a small city pub real? Do they need the metal clichés to announce their seriousness, and play like a clone of hundreds of other bands before them? There's no rule that says songs have to remain stylistically similar throughout an album, and bucking that trend would seem to me to be more adventurous than following tradition. All genres, including metal end up having these stupid rules as to what is acceptable and what constitutes a serious band, and these rules tend to come from music listeners and so called journalists, most of whom have never played or sung a note themselves. Babymetal seems to have gained support from a lot of very big bands and musicians whose credentials only a fool would question. If you can't take it seriously, and it bothers you that others do, then it's your attitude that is the problem. Fix that and you might enjoy music more.

That was a well thought review, but I disagree in two points. 1. I find the record cohesive, in a Japanese sense. The producer is trying to make metal, since he is a fan, so he did a tour through all types of metal. Tales of Destinies sounds "Dreamtheateresque", and "The One" sounds like a power ballad. So, if you try to find cohesion among the songs, yes, they don't have the same style. But I see the album as a concept album in a sort of "tribute to all types of metal... Babymetal style". 2. I have to agree that Yui and Moa's chirpy, sharp voices, do not match every song. However, I don't agree with the general statement that the girls' voices don't match the band. First things first, the girls can be divided in two. Suzuka, the eldest one, who is a VERY accomplished contralto. She is more technique than voice, but her technique is near flawless, and quite commendable for her age, since she was impressive even in their first singles such as Megitsune. Suzuka is a great singer, her contralto voice suits metal very well. She has more training than a spectacular voice, but her results are spectacular. Su is as good technically as the musicians in the band, and that has to be admitted. About Yui and Moa, the producers do not lie. The are not credited as singers: they are credited for "dancing and screaming", and that's what they do. I understand that when you're used to listening to lots of metal, their sounds throw you off balance. However, that's the point of Babymetal, and actually the reason for their tremendous success. When people see a Babymetal video, the reactions usually are: 1. O_o??? The hell did I just see? 2. I don't know how to feel about this. 3. I just listened to this twenty times. 4. Why can't I stop listening to it? 5. I'm officially in love, purists may kill me, but loving them I'll die. Will any of them marry my sons? The reason why the band is so successful is that it combines the best things of two different genres. Metal is highly energetic, strong, but many times it gives a negative, dark or aggressive vibe. J-pop is acute, chirpy, and gives a happy-go-lucky-careless-innocent feeling, but musically it's absolute crap almost 99% of the time (and when it's not it seems to be by mere chance). Now, unite the good musical work of metal, its energy and power, and add the good vibrations and happiness of J-pop. And do it well, with one hell of a good backing band, one hell of a good singer with an impressive stage presence, and two hell of hard-working little dancers who can set a crowd on fire (and are so über-kawaii that they put kittens to shame). Yes, the band is the idea of a producer (calls himself Kobametal). But instead of "pre-fabricating" it, Kobametal precision-engineered it. He loves metal and likes the project, and it shows. Just my two cents. Though maybe those were two dollars...

Just you don't know about J-pop in detail. It seems you listen to idol music only in J-pop. Of course that is NOT all. You need to know there are actually so many good songs by great musicians in J-pop history. Japanese people love J-pop and most people are supported by the power of J-pop. You shouldn't say it is crap.

Isa M Really? There are so many sad songs in J-pop, but you say "J-pop gives a happy-go-lucky-careless-innocent feeling." so I know you haven't listened to lots of J-pop. Anyway, you should have respect for music in other countries. You can NOT completely understand J-pop because of you are NOT Japanese. so I never say music in other countries are crap. If J-pop is crap as you say, Babymetal wouldn't have good songs with catchy melodies such as Megitsune and so on. Their songs definitely contain structure of creative J-pop music. ***** I don't think you and I have the same concept of music. Lyrics are poetry, and the music is made of rhythm, harmony and melody, which can be judged objectively. Your notion that I can't understand J-Pop if I'm not Japanese is ludicrous. It's like saying I cannot state that Bizet's Carmen is a masterpiece if I can't speak French. Music can be measured objectively regardless of the lyrics. You think J-pop is not that bad. OK, I get your point, you made it across. Still, you didn't give me any data that could challenge my ideas, so I still disagree with you.

Congrats to BabyMetal for breaking the Billboard top 40. In addition to the UK Top 20. This is the first time in 53 years. That an artist from Japan has appeared on the top 40 charts. quite an accomplishment considering. As a once metal elitist myself. I was forced against my will to attend a concert a couple years ago. Where ever you are out there may good fortune be upon you. It was at a time i was loosing my pacience with metal. So many bands then and indeed now. Are sitting on their asses doing nothing. Reminiscing of how metal once was. We used to be everywhere now look at us! For fuck sake get over yourselves. Since when has metal played by the rules. BabyMetal is pretty much breaking all of them. Which is what is getting under the skin of so many elitists. Well guess what to freaking bad. Our rein is over & it's time for a new generation to pick where we left off. Metal resistance is a great sophomore effort. It takes a lot of risks and frankly that's what metal needs right now. I am also extremely impressed how much Babymetal has improved in two years. They clearly are not just a novelty. I myself say them at Wembley Arena a few days ago. I was once again blown away by the power & energy. This group brings to every single performance. It was a near masterpiece. As i haven't felt that way. At a concert in a very long time. Babymetal clearly work their asses off & it shows. Keep up the great work ladies. Rock on!! ♨🎸♨

here's how to understand babymetal... imagine a trio of teenage girls who are growing up in a very sheltered and controlled pop music factory environment. living in a nation with one of the lowest crime rates in the world. fronting a metal band, that is being introduced by a transvestite, to sing breaking the law with Rob Halford. if someone had told you last year that that was not only going to happen, but that is was going to be awesome, what would you have said? what I like about this band is that they are just having fun. I think that's the part that makes them hard to accept by the metal purists. metal, at it's core, is angry music. metal is about being angry, being scary, being pissed off about something. then here comes this preteen, j-pop trio singing straight and clean over some catchy, straight forward metal music. but they're not angry. they're not trying to scare anyone, or screaming about how fucked up the world is. they're just having a good time and trying to get the fans to let go and join the party. look at the circle pits they get at their shows. its just people having fun running in circles bouncing off each other. nobody's throwing elbows, nobody's doing the toxic waltz; it's not like a deicide show where everyone in the pit is trying to prove how badass they are. that's what's different. this band isn't trying to break ground, or prove they're heavy and edgy, or wow us with creative wizardry. they're not even trying to be very original beyond the mash up concept that is the band's existence. as for the album, yes it's kind of dichotomous in that it lurches from one musical approach to another, but once you let go of the idea that metal has to always be dark, edgy, and angry, all you're left with is fun. if anyone had told me as I was plunking down my cash for some new band called terrorizer, that someday there would be a band making happy metal music, in japanese, I would have tried to slap the stupid out of them. today, we have babymetal; a happy metal band with j-pop roots. in 10 or 20 years we'll probably look back and realize this band is the best thing to happen on the metal scene this decade.

What I like most about BABYMETAL is that they are unapologetic, and further unapologetically J-Pop. It is exactly what it is: a technically proficient band of metal musicians mixed with an astoundingly adept production/mixing crew, fronted by a trio of young Japanese girls who are skilled entertainers in their own right. When it's playing on my headphones the mix gels amazingly, and is crazy entertaining. I agree to a small degree that the music could be described as "metal mimicry," but isn't most of it? All music is borrowed, to an extent. "Good artists copy, great artists steal." I think BABYMETAL is one of many Asian bands (from Japan and Korea, amongst others) that are creating a wave of music that will make Western societies rethink what they know about music. P.S.- The album is crazy fun to listen to. I recommend it.

I listen to all kinds of metal and I also listen to many Japanese metal bands as well as J-pop. So this album is not weird to me as it is to many other listeners. Many people will say that this isn't metal. Metal music does not always have to be dark and negative with growling lyrics. If you look back at the hairmetal bands of the 80s, many of them had more of a Pop sound and had much lively and fun lyrics. I think that because that they are singing mostly in Japanese that many listeners don't understand and aren't connected to the songs as much if they really understood the lyrics.

+ Arthur S The hair metal bands of the 80's were not actually playing Metal. It was hard rock with a more distorted guitar tone. Song structures were not Metal. Most were simply pop songs with extra audio/visual flair. Unfortunately groups that all had a similar loom were grouped together back then which really was a disservice since there are several criminally underated bands from the 80's.

Babymetal managed to do something most hard rock/metal bands have failed to do since the early '90's. They made metal fun again. Say what you will about hair metal, their shows were a lot more fun than watching Dave Mustaine standing still for 2 1/2 hours. Most modern metal rides the anger emotion train with little care for vocal hooks or memorable melody lines. If I had to listen to one more singer who sounded like cookie monster, I was gonna' freak.

This fight over what is 'real' metal and what isn't sounds like a bunch of children fighting over what is the real color of the sky. So inane... I have been listening to music for almost 50 years and enjoy different genres of it. This is just another one, nothing more, nothing less. I also fail to see why 'metalheads' take themselves so seriously. It's only rock 'n roll. I can listen to BABYMETAL, Sex Pistols, Prince, Chet Atkins and Rob Zombie all in the same sitting. Throw in some Chevelle, Foo Fighters, Metallica and Megadeth for fun. Let's have a party and just grow up.

I'm old and I think he is talking bollocks, one most albums are a collection of songs not a sweeping concept, Two critics spend their life trying to sound deep and all knowing, most of them most of the time are just speaking hot air. plus most of the time they dismiss what is new and only embrace it after everyone else, when they can't help but ex knowledge it is popular. I personally hate screamo metal, turned me right off, find it repetitive and uninteresting, Babymetal just has something unique and charming to it, drawn me into it for all the right reasons, The music is very well made and played, the kawaii makes me smile

I think I know what they are going for here. The concept is simply; Babymetal do not adhere to a single genre or a set of sub-genres. It/they embrace all types of metal and I believe it's a deliberate approach, not just a mixed bag of what they managed to scrape together.

Agreed. Two songs stand out most in my mind, "Tales of the Destinies" and "From Dusk Till Dawn" just stand out to me as metal musical masterpieces. They are so complex, so deep, so unique. "Metal Resistance" is one of the best sophomoric achievements that any group of any genre has ever produced after a hit debut album.

As a fan of babymetal. I think this is a very fair review. and i think the producers and label behind babymetal should take this critique to heart. Perhaps let them settle on an identity musically. And now that they have proven they are not a curiosity or gimmick, really become a band instead of a project.

I really think you need a 5 skull scale instead of 4 because 2 out of 4 seems incredibly low for any album. I guess for someone that neither likes it nor dislikes it it makes sense, but as Marty Friedman said to the vocalist of Chthonic this is BabyMetal... everyone has an opinion on them.

Honestly, your review doesn't matter. Yes, you're reviewing the album, but BM will continue to sell out all of their shows and draw in more and more fans worldwide even if you gave them a zero score. It's not what "you" think or what "you" feel. It's what the FANS think. ANY metal band would die for BM's fan demographics. It's not about the technical aspects of the music (Kami band) It's the holistic approach to this new approach to Metal music and taking it in another direction. This is why BM will be and is successful.

i agree that babymetal jumps around a lot stylistically, and the japanese girl pop vocals are an odd mix with the music, but those qualities are consistent in all their material so i think they are actually very unified and cohesive in those senses. take it or leave it but when you pick up a babymetal record, you know what you're going to hear -- tightly performed metal with japanese girl pop vocals -- so i think that says a lot about how cohesive it actually is.

I've posted similar comments on other Babymetal videos but I'm seeing a lot of negativity here so here I go again. I'm one of those old metalheads who is supposed to hate this stuff. This band is UNDENIABLY "product". J-pop is for the most part all product. And I don't have a problem with it for one very simple reason: IT'S ALL PRODUCT! Image is where it's at and always has been. Gene Simmons isn't actually "The God Of Thunder". Slayer aren't devil worshipers. In fact, Tom Araya came out several years ago as a devout Catholic. GWAR aren't really aliens from another planet sent to take over the world. It's all show business. Sure, this is different and it's plastic and it's "not organic, man" but you know what? That's OK. This band is fun. Those girls are fun to watch. The backing group is super talented. If you don't like it, fine. But what's wrong with something being fun for fun's sake? Besides, the best Heavy Metal is supposed to be BIG and STUPID! Iron Maiden are one of the greatest metal bands ever and you can't argue that, taking a step back, they are BIG and STUPID! Rob Zombie "gets" Babymetal because Rob understands that heavy music should be fun. And Rob definitely gets "BIG and STUPID". And I can't think of another band who's live shows are bigger and stupider than Babymetal. All you old school metalheads sound like The Comic Book Guy! Either relax and enjoy it or shut up and let other people enjoy it. And if they pull a few new fans into the genre who wouldn't otherwise be exposed to metal, how can that be a bad thing?
@alexdhamp

I agree for the most part...save for the "Jpop is all product". Not true. _Idol_ J-pop(the scene the three girls of BM hail from) is product. Then you have things like Suga Shikao, Utada Hikaru, Superfly, Koda Kumi, and _so_ many others that are the furthest thing from product.

It actually is a project instead of a "band" like we traditionally know. The girls and the band were put together to play songs that I'm guessing a producer wrote. You could say that Babymetal was "manufactured" in some way. But that doesn't mean it's not good or fun, in fact it's the opposite. I think you're better off thinking about the songs instead of the albums, since it looks like it's just a mashup, both this album and the previous one. Outside of a technical analysis, listening to Babymetal is fun as hell, period.

What's interesting for someone like me who has hardcore ADD and a major appreciation for both alletal-styles, and musicL genres in general, is that the lack of cohesion between songs is one of my favorite aspects of BM. I just get bored too easily with most albums lately, and the multiple swerves really shows off how much the people in charge of BM know musical theory and metal/pop hooks that they can infuse so many genres/styles, and still make it work somehow. Still really enjoyed your mature, measured, intelligent review though! Hard to find those on the internet sometimes...

I see where you're coming from Sam, but personally I think the album and the group do fit together as a whole. I rather enjoy the mix ups on the record, the way the band flips from strait up Power Metal to fucking Metalcore shows a lot of diversity and the girls show some excellent vocal range. And these might be "pop" singers but they're not something in the vein of Justin Bieber or Katy Perry (names I bring up for comparison and not derision) they're VERY skilled vocalists, they're some of the most skillful vocalists I've heard in this genre, and I think those high pitched vocals really bring an interesting flavor to the songs. Maybe that's just my own preference for melodious metal to strait up guttural screaming and going "RRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!" Not that those bands are inherently untalented either. I won't say Babymetal are something for everyone, and I do understand your feelings, but I think it's something more enjoyable if you're open to styles that are outside the usual heavy metal conventions

Good review! I think to truly review BabyMetal, one needs to take into account visual as well as audio especially for what is a foreign language to most everyone except those in Japan. A large part of the appeal of the band is having the girls in their awesome outfits doing high energy dancing and choreography. I know you mentioned you are rating the album only, and I'd have to agree with you on your verdict, on that front. But once we see it live and/or a handful of videos based off the songs, may change people's minds a bit. With the original album, the band had prominence in the songs. With this one, there's a lot more vocals and it's mixed where the vocals come out prominent over the band. I have to admit that BabyMetal has revamped my interest in music again. Not much in the last 10-15 years has interested me this much. Part of it was raising a family, other was, meh, just didn't care. So I give them kudos for peaking my interest in metal again, even if it ends up being short lived.

This was actually probably my favorite album last year. I kinda like that everything is a little all over the place. One track can sound like I See Stars, another like Dragonforce, and yet another can sound like Emmure. But I also get how some people, especially hardened metalheads just may not like that approach to songwriting, and I certainly how they may not like the pop elements. Japan has this weird relationship with pop and rock/metal music. While the idea for a full band like Babymetal is pretty unique, it's not that unusual for J-pop acts to fire off a few songs on an album that might have soaring solos or ripping guitar riffs. But to a Western ear, it may not sound right. We may have a style called "pop metal", but here "pop metal" really just means melodic hard rock with a bit more edge to it, and was really an 80's thing, growing up alongside its sleazier and rattier brother glam metal. It doesn't mean having like Destiny's Child singing over Pantera riffs!

Also, man, if you found this album confounding and all over the place, try the first album! I say this as a fan of noise music, experimental electronic music, Nurse With Wound, and cybergrind, but that album (I love because it's) the weirdest damn thing I've ever heard! Most of it follows a fairly simple formula: death metal/thrash metal with pop vocals. But when it comes to breaks, that's when things go absolutely insane! You get your typical shredding solos, as well as some pretty standard if still pleasing and heavy as fuck Emmure style breakdowns...but you also get elements of hardcore techno thrown at you (not surprising if you know Japanese music, or have ever played a DDR game. J-pop has a weird obsession with happy hardcore). But wait, that's not all! Let's break up one of those breakdowns with a FUCKING SKA SECTION! And for one song, let's just throw in a little 2 Chainz style trap beat and have the girls do their best Big Sean over it! And then, for like 3 songs, let's replace the breakdowns with fucking dubstep drops!!!! I love that album. I come back to Metal Resistance more though, because it's the exact opposite of that. While the flow of the album is style stylistically all over the place, the songs themselves individually are better structured, more melodic, and make the girls feel like they belong more. It actually is a much more coherent album. Still though, the first album is fantastic just because I doubt any band will ever top the WTFuckery of it. Pack it up, Wolf Eyes. Call it a day, Gigantic Brain. You got fucking outclassed by a bunch of 14 year old gothic loli dressing school girls!

Awesome review. I'm not sure this should be taken as serious as a new Slayer album. This band is a caricature of metal from Japan's perspective. I noticed their previous album had their own type of song for each album. This is basically M-pop, its cute its heavy and I think its great that younger girls can have their own bands to follow. Those riffs are killer though and they set the bar higher than "pure" metal bands. Its way better than I've been seeing coming out lately. Also these girls really earn their keep. They're not standing out there just looking cute. They have a dance choreography for each song. How many bands do that? If they're able to commercialize this, more power to them. I love listening to their stuff at work. Can't wait to hear the new album.

I completely agree with everything this guy said. I really like J-Metal and was a huge fan of the first album. However, Metal Resistance is absolutely missing the cohesiveness that the first album had. It seemed they were trying to reach out to all sorts of metal fans rather than move forward with their own identity. I like the songs ... just not the album. I still think it's worth buying, though. My issue with this review (and I love BANGER and Sam's opinions on music) is that cohesiveness is not what a record should be reviewed on. Some of the BEST records ever (one that comes to mind is the 1989 album Faith No More - The Real Thing) are not "cohesive" in their sound, they are experimental SONG to SONG, not album to album. When I first listened to Metal Resistance I was a little concerned about the diverseness of each track, I do agree the first album did flow from song to song and had a similar take on each song (metal and j-pop fused). This album is more diverse track to track but after MULTIPLE listens I think you get what they did here and what they did is great. The album should NOT be criticized for being diverse track to track, it should be praised for it. I love ya Sam but I have to disagree with you about Babymetal - Metal Resistance!

+Kalimdor199 - "BabyMetal to me sounds like a corporate project... one of those idol thing pushed forward by Japanese music corporations to sell lots of records." - I guarantee until you read that this band was a "corporate project", you had NO idea how this band came together just by listening to their songs. That's like saying you know what someone looks like just by hearing their voice...Impossible. As far as being a "corporate project" goes, why not? A producer who deals with Japanese idol singers happens to be a life-long metal fan and decides to put the two together. What is really wrong with that? It's like a Reese's peanut butter cup. "You got your chocolate (no pun intended) in my peanut butter". "You got your peanut butter in my chocolate". Why ask questions when something JUST WORKS? I appreciate that some people don't like it, but to NOT like it simply because it's a "corporate project" is just absurd. You don't think Kobametal (producer/manager) put his heart and soul into this project? You don't think the girls put 100% toward making a great record? You think the Kami band or whomever they used in studio was NOT giving it all they had? I am absolutely positive that they all put as much heart and soul into their record as any other metal band out there ever has... Maybe it IS a "corporate project", but THAT certainly doesn't mean it can't be good or is somehow less impressive than any other metal album ever put out. As far as this review goes, the reviewer has his opinions and he has every right to them. But to the point where he says the album is not "cohesive", I must ring in and say that it is nearly impossible to create an entire album that is cohesive but also remains eclectic, which is one of the things these girls are most proud of. The WIDE collection of genres that this album spans is what makes it really good...Just my 2 + 2 cents.

It must be clear by now that they are not just a gimmick as some might have thought them to be, Babymetal have been on the scene for more than 5 yrs now and growing. They are definitely metal, shit/crappy metal to some but can't be anything otherwise imo. I think in case of some metalheads there's a fear deep down or some delusion that if they start listening to sub genres like babymetal, they might get pulled away from the metal music they usually listen to. But they have to realize that once you like Metal music you are its fan forever and there's no way someone or something's gonna take it away from you. Now that like Babymetal doesn't mean that I am gonna stop listening to Meshuggah, Gojira, Megadeth, Pantera,Insomnium, Belakor,Opeth or any other Metal bands I love. And for the haters I want to say that Babymetal gonna rise much higher than what they have achieved till date, so just look away and concentrate on what you love listening to.

I owe you a huge debt. I used to listen to Insomnium all the time back in high school yet somehow forgot about them and have been wracking my brain for about 6 years trying to remember the name of the band. Seriously, thanks \m/

Review more J-metal bands such as Dir En Grey and Maximum the Hormone. I like what they do with metal most of the time.

For me its the vocals that completely put me off. Musically i can get behind most of what i've heard but the vocals just ruin it for me. So, its not my thing but unlike some people i can see why they're very popular. If you like metal and can get into the J-pop vocals then i'm sure they're great.

+Alex Haskett - You GET IT Bro! There are some actual Babymetal tracks from their first album, without any vocals. Bi*chen Stuff! I'm sure you will get into that.

He put the wrong cover of babymetal self-titled album mistaken it for 'metal resistance' cover. So he upload the new review to hide his incompetence

So he likes an album with songs that sound fucking the same. Just like your run of the mill metal album.
