I was at the concert where this was filmed, and there was a live band playing at the show (guitar and bass on the left, drums and guitar on the right). Officially, Babymetal is just the three young ladies up front, but when they perform live, they have a backing band called the Kami Band (God/Spirit Band). The Kami Band is made up of professional session musicians, so the line up changes from show to show. There are actually two Kami Bands; the Kami Band of the East, made up of Japanese musicians who play for their shows in Japan and tours in Asia, and the Kami Band of the West, who play on their European and American tours. The drummer for the Kami Band of the East is Hideki Aoyama, and the drummer for the Kami Band of the West is Anthony Barone. It's worth noting that neither of them play on the studio recordings. At the concert where this video was filmed, the drummer was Anthony Barone, but the audio on this video is from the studio version.

Good analysis of the drums ... I think you have been told everything I might have said about the two Kami Band drummers and how this is the studio audio, so it was neither of them you were listening to. BABYMETAL were not as manufactured or the sort of construct people think (or they were not manufactured in the same way of The Monkees or boy bands where they fill spaces with boys with the "right look" and follow a set formula with a formulaic style of music that is known to appeal to a pre-identified audience almost guaranteed to buy their records). They started in 2010 as a sub-unit of a school themed J-Pop Idol group called Sakura Gakuin which was set up by the Amuse talent agency as a way to coach and train about a dozen of the most talented girls on their books in all aspects of entertainment (singing, dancing, acting, modelling, writing, stage management etc) with a view to their choosing how they would like to continue their career when they were at school leaving age (15 in Japan). As members of that group they would sing songs and dance, the sub-units (like after school clubs) would have two or three or maybe more girls in each and they would have their own themed songs (tennis, cooking, science etc) to perform at Sakura Gakuin shows for parents and supporters and at Idol festivals where other groups would also perform. BABYMETAL were the heavy music club and they were formed around Su-metal's extraordinary vocal talents and stage presence - she was still only 12 but their producer, Kobametal (a lifelong metalhead), had seen her a year or two before singing with her previous Jpop trio and was so impressed that he was inspired to create some sort of Metal-pop fusion if he could work with her and have her front the band. Amuse thought the idea was mad, anything metal in Japan at that time had virtually no commercial value - but they allowed Kobametal his pet project under the umbrella of Sakura Gakuin but provided no extra funding, so there was no financial risk when it failed (as they were sure it would). Against all the odds BABYMETAL found an audience nobody knew existed and started to gain in popularity. In 2013 Su would be 15 and would graduate from Sakura Gakuin (having the school theme it was for girls aged 10 to 15), but it was decided that BABYMETAL should be her vehicle as she furthered her career as a vocalist and should separate from the Idol group to go with her as an independent band in their own right. BABYMETAL have gone on to become one of the very best live bands on the planet (and have won international awards to prove that is not just my opinion). Their big arena shows are spectacular, but they put on great shows every time, even in smaller venues and festivals as they tour the world where they can't always have all the special effects and flames etc too. As you have been told, they are supported in live shows by the Kami Band - some of Japan's very best session musicians, each one of them a world class instrumentalist. They were phased in gradually from October 2012 while the idea of BABYMETAL going independent was being tested to see if it might work with a live band and really did have a future. BABYMETAL had started with little or no extra budget so they sang to a backing track at the start in Sakura Gakuin shows and when they started doing their own small shows in a shopping mall, a tiny venue with 150 capacity, a stage by the foodcourt normally used by comedians at a festival and so on guys in skeleton suits (Babybones) would pretend to play the instruments. The Kami Band played at a couple of festivals and the encores in some shows. The Legend 1997 concert (Su-metal's 16th birthday party) in December 2013 was the last big show where the Babybones appeared and the Kami Band played only the encores. The Kami Band became the full time support for all live shows at the start of 2014 and have been with BABYMETAL ever since (the Kami Band of the West - American musicians including Anthony Barone on drums - have supported BABYMETAL in the more extended foreign tours since 2019) - but only for live shows, they do not record the studio versions.

BABYMETAL are the three ladies: Suzuka Nakamoto aka SU-METAL (the lead vocalist), Moa Kikuchi (MOAMETAL) and Momoko Okazaki (MOMOMETAL) both with the backing vocals and dance role. There was an original member, Yui Mizuno, who left the group in 2018 due to health issues. They are backed by a band called Kami Band formed by session musicians. There are currently two sets of kamis: the eastern and the western. You're arriving to a special time with a more mature sound and a BM side we've never seen before, to actually know how do they get here with so much success you need to go back more than 10 years ago, you'll see plenty of live performance with live sound throughout all those years, however you'll see the musicians aren't always the same. Lemme introduce this group a little bit more. BabyMetal is a Japanese metal dance unit created in 2010 under another Jpop/Jrock group called Sakura Gakuin, they had 11 and 12 years old when started this and become independent after 2013, they created their own genre called kawaii-metal mixing Jpop with metal sound and different subgenres along with many more rhythms. Their name is a reference to a new genre and not related to their ages or "baby" faces, is a pun intended play words with "heavy-metal" which sounds similar to "baby-metal". They are: *SuMetal* lead vocalist, now 25. *MoaMetal* scream and dance, now 23. *YuiMetal* scream and dance, former member since 2018. *MomoMetal* scream and dance, she's 20 and is the new official member since April 1st recently. None of them are related. After 2018 you'll see backup dancers performing along with them but none of them are official members, they don't sing, only dance, but that status change recently like i said. The Kami Band is a set of elite musicians who were send to help the girls with the metal sound, they rotate so probably you won't see some of them in all live concerts (especially the guitarists). They also divide in two set of musicians: - The Eastern Kami Band, which is Japanese musicians and the one who's been playing with them since almost the beginning, the stable drummer is Hideki Aoyama. - The Western Kami Band, all of them are western musicians, three of them used to be part of another band called Galactic Empire, and the drummer is Anthony Barone former drummer of Shadow Of Intent. He's the one you saw here in this MV and also in the new official MV of METALIZM, but none of these are with live sound, these are footage clips of their recent live concerts but with studio album sound and none of the Kami Band are involved in the recording studio, the credits goes over the composer and arrangers. They've been a duo after YuiMetal left in 2018 and performing along with backup dancers called avengers, and now one of them become an official member recently. Thanks for this reaction. As mentioned by others, we don't get drummer analysis/reactions as often and anyone with knowledge brings something interesting to the table. Which is great. Babymetal are an odd one, but this is actually a good thing because they can try things and experiment that others really can't. Babymetal isn't a pop group and they aren't a metal band, but somewhere in between. The metal elitists that love to do their gatekeeping would very much agree with that statement because they would tell you they are not a metal band. I sometimes call them a live performance group that does metal fusion. But metal is their core sound, it's just the vocals are more poppy, but they are Japanese so it's 'J-pop vocals' and their main attraction is live performances. The girls are the center and one vocalist is the center of the center. So yes, this isn't a great video to show the drummer at all. Babymetal has started to focus more on the band again in recent times, but still limited. Sadly they've been doing something smart from a business perspective, which is to use the live video and put album audio on top. Which means the views count towards the album charts and the live video helps sell the upcoming Blu-ray. So even the audio you heard wasn't live. Anyway... if you want to see a drummer play, best is actually: Babymetal at a metal or rock festival. Or when you have a good 'fancam'.

BABYMETAL is the three young women, Su-metal, Moametal and Momometal. The first two are original members and started out back in 2010 aged 11-12 years old. They are accompanied by the Kami Band (session musicians) for live shows. What you heard was the studio recording laid over video footage from a live show. Who the drummer is in Babymetal is complicated. For the albums it's just an unknown studio musician or maybe even just software. For live shows there have been two different drummers used over the last several years. The first is Aoyama Hideki who is the drummer for the eastern Kami Band (one of the two bands that supports Babymetal in live shows) and Anthony Barone who is part of the western Kami Band (the other band that supports Babymetal live) and is the one you see (not hear) in this video since this video uses the studio audio.

There's almost always something more going on than you notice on the first listen. Especially since one of their specialties is mixing genres. There's been a multiyear discussion about the musical origins of some of their songs. Part of what makes Babymetal fun is trying to figure out just what they are doing while mixing genres. Sometimes I think by mixing two or three together, they made a whole new one. and that's why it's so hard to figure out the musical origin of the genre. they made it up. The tricksters. If you want to listen and see the Babymetal kami band better, I recommend the songs that start with a Kami intro. I recommend: YAVA (With Kami band intro) Babymetal's official videos focus more on the girls, since they are the group, so I recommend that you better watch lives that other youtube channels upload. The official videos do show the musicians a bit, but the truth is that they have favorites for the guitarists, and they hardly show the drummer, so I don't recommend the official ones so much. The Kami band, both the eastern and western ones are great. Although we babymetal fans have a special affection for the first Kami band.
