This is a very atypical performance for them. You should check out the live version at PIA Arena MM from April 2023 to see how it normally goes in their live performances. Monochrome is a song from their 2023 album "The Other One", so if you haven't been paying attention to them for a while, you wouldn't have heard it before. This video was filmed during the period after Yuimetal left in 2018, but before Momometal officially joined in April 2023, so that's why only Su-metal and Moametal appear in it. In the second First Take video they did, a performance of "The One", Momometal is also present.

Great first reaction and welcome to the BABYMETAL Foxhole. 🦊 BABYMETAL formed in 2010, there were 3 original members (they were only 12 and 11 years old at the time). Su-metal is lead vocalist (it was her 26th birthday last week), Yuimetal and Moametal were in charge of "scream and dance" (not scream as in the metal sense, they do backing vocals, harmonies and lead the crowd interaction in their live shows). Yui last performed in October 2017, she missed the next 12 months because of poor health and in October 2018 she announced she was still not fully recovered and had decided to leave the band. Su and Moa chose to continue as a duo through to (and a bit beyond) their 10th anniversary, so from 2019 they were supported by any one of three dancers (the Avengers Riho, Kano and Momoko) who would take turns dancing in the third spot. Riho is now a solo artist, Kano has her own JPop group, so Momoko was the only Avenger after about March 2020. Su-metal and Moametal recorded this video as a duo shortly before 1st April this year (2023) when, after 4 -5 years as a duo, BABYMETAL became a trio again when Momoko was revealed as the new official third member Momometal. The lyrics refer to a "monochrome firework", imagining the night sky in colours and finally painting the world in the colours of the rainbow. It is about how dark things can become, but no matter how long the night the morning will always arrive. It is a song full of hope. The visuals in the official lyric video seem to reference significant events in history (seem to, we don't really know if they do), but suggest that even the worst of times will eventually come to an end. The figures in white in this video - they were providing backing vocals/harmonies on the "ohohoh" parts of course, but there is always something more to it. We don't know who they were (we can have an educated guess). They may have been a reference back to when BABYMETAL had been a trio and a hint that they would become a trio again very soon, but I think their being dressed in white was possibly the most significant thing. BABYMETAL have performed dressed in white two times before this (3 if you count the 'Karate' official video) and each time it was at a significant turning point in their own history. First time was at Legend Z early in 2013 for the last 2 encores. This was their final performance as a sub-unit of their parent group Sakura Gakuin before BABYMETAL separated to go their own way as an independent band in their own right. Second time Yui and Moa started the Legend 1997 (December 2013) concert dressed in white making a theatrical offering of neck braces to the god of metal (represented by the statue in that concert). Legend 1997 was the final step of their separation and becoming independent band. The whole concert told that story of their transition and in particular of Suzuka Nakamoto's transition, giving up her life and existence as a JPop Idol and sacrificing herself to be reborn as the Metal Goddess Su-metal. If you include the 'Karate' official video - that was the lead single for the second album (2016) and that was another big step as they moved on from the first album which was nearly half full of songs they had originally released with Sakura Gakuin and started to explore more metal genres musical styles. So here we see figures in white again ... and this was just before the "new" BABYMETAL was revealed with Momometal joining Su-metal and Moametal to make up the new trio. All of that is just my own thinking of course - there is every chance I've read far more into it all than is really there. You won't have heard anything quite like them (I know you have heard them some time ago so you do at least have some idea what youmight be getting into) - and they have brought choreographed dance to metal ... but not as you may know it, their choreo serves two very real purposes - it helps with interpreting the meaning of a lyric or song (very handy for those of us who speak no Japanese) and it is designed to include and involve the crowd ... and they are black belts of crowd control and engagement. They don't follow the same format of virtually every band in the last 50-60 years, they do things their own way and as for their music - again unlike virtually every other band where you can stick them in a convenient box (x band will play power metal, y band is thrash, z band is hard rock, w band is Prog etc) - BABYMETAL do them all and they will also throw in some completely unrelated style or musical genre with the metal when you least expect it. They have nearly 70 songs now, each one different to the last, no fillers. You may not like a song - unlikely, but no problem if you don't - just try another song and the chances are you'll love it. You will get a lot of suggestions in the comments I'm sure and they will all be good - the official videos are all good and worth seeing but BABYMETAL are a live performance act, live is where you will see and hear them at their best. As you were saying, a good follow up to this would be the live performance of 'Monochrome' at their 'BABYMETAL Begins, Clear Night' concert from April 2023 and you can see and hear for yourselves if it matches up to this beautiful piano version (I think you will be very pleasantly surprised) - and we can get you onto some of their 'wilder' songs and performances after that.

Thanks again from Japan 有難う💛。The electric version of "Monochrome" was played in every show in the BABYMETAL's North American tour (29 gigs mostly with DETHKLOK) and EU/UK tour (20 gisg). The ♪ oh oh ohoo ♪ part was chanted by the audience at every venue in the sea of phone lights. That is breathtaking. In this first take version, the girls proved that they can do anything. They have forced people to headbang with their heavy music and sharp choreo. Now they can depict various images by just singing and project them into the listeners' brain to move people emotionally. Thank you BABYMETAL. And thank you Koba, the BM producer, for your serendipity. Some 13 years ago, you certainly discovered something amazing and sacred for us. Speaking of the three figures in white hood adding some background vocals, I believe they are homage to BM's girlhood with original three girls, whereas current reborn BM have new and matured triangle formation.

Just so you know the new official member of this group is MomoMetal, she's not simply another backup dancer, she's MomoMetal and she deserves her spot, she's not here because she wasn't announced as an official member by this time but you'll see her later in another TFT clip with another song. BM fans already know this type of unique acoustic version like Akatsuki Unfinished Version live at Legend 1997 or "The One - Stairway To Living Legend", so we're used to this SuMetal's vocals power to reach and melting our hearts. Fans at the recent World Tour 2023 were enjoying the original version of this song at every show and having a magical moment and pretty sure we're gonna get more this year, they just announced another show in Okinawa for the first time playing in that prefecture. The three white figures dressed in white are probably a reference to old BM era when YuiMetal was still part of the group or maybe a reference to the new young BM unit they previously performed along with them and are part of this new metalverse project, they already debut at Summer Sonic Festival opening the festival with a set of new three songs exclusive for them. When they released this Piano Version the new official member MomoMetal wasn't announced yet, that's why you only see the two of them, after this the official announcement they released another acoustic version of a song called "The One - Unfinished Version" and they included MomoMetal, the new official member in it. The three of them are so close and the sense of unity with the audience is so wonderful and moving at the live performance. as for the "normal" version of this song -- the music is _amazing_ the official video is quite powerful (and is the one and only lyric video done by them) and definitely pushes you in to a different perspective. that being said, the live version is simply magical (especially once you're well-acquainted with the song)

This video was released some months before adding a new official third member (Momo-metal). I think that they were somehow announcing this event showing three of them, but without showing their faces (the name of the third new member was kept secret until the day it happened).

IMO, the 3 robed figures represent the 3 members of Babymetal and is a call back to the Karate MV. In that video, they fight a couple of bad guys, with the final boss being 3 robed figures with skull masks. *SPOILER ALERT It is revealed in the end that they were fighting themselves or their inner demons! Both Moa and Yui were 11 years old All three girls were friends and classmates who attended an idol group (Sakura Gakuin) founded in 2010 by Amuse Talent Agency for girls 10 to 15. Themed around school life (they attended regular school as well) the girls would learn and train at vocals, dancing, public speaking and etiquette, etc., graduate at age 15 and then move onto whatever entertainment path they chose or that suited their talents. Key Kobayashi was a music producer for Amuse and heard Suzuka sing at age 9 and was impressed with her strong vocals and stage presence. Kobayashi was a fan of heavy metal but believed that the genre had become stale and tired (especially in Japan) with metal bands getting old Kobayashi believed the genre needed to be reborn (BabyMetal means the birth of a new metal genre). Kobayashi felt that Suzuka had the ability to front a metal band and that her vocals and presence could withstand the metal guitars and drums. The fusion of Jpop and Metal began. He placed Moa and Yui as backup singers/dancers and a phenomenon was about to result. At first Amuse showed little interest and the girls had financing mainly from Kobayashi. They performed at strip malls and small venues using clothes borrowed from friends and family. No money for a real band they had friends dressed in homemade skeleton costumes pretending to play instruments to a backtrack. They became a sensation (these young ladies paid their dues). Amuse saw the potential and in 2012 hired the best session musicians Japan had to offer (The Kami Band) who tours with them today (now includes world class musicians from the USA for tours outside of Asia). Nice, glad you are re-introduced to Babymetal again. They've grown quite a bit since the early days, and Su's vocals have always been soul-piercing, even since the early days! I assumed based on what you said in the video, you've only heard a few songs, which may not have showcased this. Also, you absolutely need to check out the live version! Pia Arena MM, Apr 2023, Babymetal Begins - Clear Night concert. It is absolutely amazing and very very different from the First Take. In addition: 1). Rondo of Nightmare (Budokan 2014): Heavy and dark, Su-metal solo, band flex, awesome performance. 2). Amore (Wembley 2016): Epic love ballad, and Su-metal solo, except to speed metal, blast beats, and shreddy guitars.
