I’m back on the farm in Ecuador, enjoying the mild climate and homegrown food. A lot of progress has been made and a lot of work still needs to be done.

So far, the harvest is trickling in. Today I pulled a handful of potatoes, munched on some peas, and continued to collect more chard, lettuce, and beets than I can possibly use. The fruit trees are being stubbornly slow to produce, but I did get one banana passionfruit and tons of rocoto peppers to make a fruity painful hot hot sauce.

Eastern Europe has it’s charm. I particularly like Romania, but nothing can compare to living in the Andes Mountains. That mesh on the greenhouse is a mixed bag. It’s definitely helped keep the insects to a minimum, but it’s starting to break down in the sun and turn into thousands of little bits of plastic.

I am guessing you are at a higher elevation than us, we are about 40 minutes west of Mindo. With your asparagus, do you feel that it requires a cooler climate to grow? We own turkeys but they are not on our property, maybe a good food source to look into.
@FallofftheMap
@FallofftheMap Жыл бұрын
I suspect asparagus would thrive around Mindo if planted in raised beds with well designed drainage. Much like Mindo, I get an excessive amount of rain. I’ve learned to build elaborate raised gardens using layers of sand, pumice, rotten wood, compost, and thatch. With adequate drainage most temperate to tropical plants will survive.

Why don't you ask your neighbor how to plant the avocado trees?
@FallofftheMap
@FallofftheMap Жыл бұрын
I have. There isn’t a big difference in how we planted. I think the difference is how their soil was cared for in the years before planting, and also the fact that they use chemical fertilizers and pesticides. I need to use a different technique to be successful.

there is a house on the farm? when did that happen...
@FallofftheMap
@FallofftheMap Жыл бұрын
It’s been a long time coming. This little house is just the beginning. Eventually it will be a vacation rental once I build a larger house next to it. The plan is to have a place where people can rent a cabin and experience life on the farm, including access to whatever they need from the gardens.

Omg , what a beautiful country you live in..do they accept Irish visas ..cos if so I'm emigrating.
@FallofftheMap
@FallofftheMap Жыл бұрын
You are able to enter Ecuador without a visa for 90 days as a tourist, and extend to 180 days with a tourist visa. At that point you can either qualify for and obtain a resident visa such as the investor visa, or you can spend the other half of the year in Colombia. A lot of folks go back and forth spending 6 moths in Ecuador and six months in Colombia.
@randolphharrison4219
@randolphharrison4219 Жыл бұрын
@@FallofftheMapI doubt overstaying would matter much, i heard of a guy who overstayed a Columbian visa for 5 years, his penalty? A 100 usd fine.
@FallofftheMap
@FallofftheMap Жыл бұрын
The penalties for overstaying frequently change and are confusing even to the authorities that enforce them. If the latest information I’ve read is correct the new overstay fee is “50% of the basic salary.” The basic salary in Ecuador is $450 per month, so the penalty would be $225. From what I understand you get banned from entering Ecuador for 2 years and are only charged the penalty if you want the ban removed so you can return. However, what people are actually charged varies depending on the mood of the immigration officer at the airport. Many people are let go with a warning. Others are forced to pay on the spot with the penalty (bribe) ranging from $50 to $1200 based on the reports I’ve read.
