Precisely the treatment plan I’m currently working on with my PT. I’m already doing some form of these stretches already. It’s an ongoing process for sure. Thanks for the muscle diagrams. It really helped me to understand how tight muscles can pull down on the lower spine and cause my nerve irritation.

As a fellow doctor I have to say you have an amazing Thaler for conveying your knowledge in an easy to understand accurate way. I have been doing a lot of your back routines to help sooth my back and piriformis issues due to my overzealous workouts. They all have been helping so much that I feel essentially normal. Can’t thank you enough. I hope you and your family are all happy and in good health💛

I had piriformis syndrome a few years back and went to a chiropractor with a PT and massage. It took several months to be better. I have to watch it when my piriformis starts to feel tight. I'll add these exercises. Since then I've had lower back problems which I think are from tight hip flexors. I'll try your stretches too. I need to get the edge tool, I've been thinking about it for awhile.

I came across your videos about a month agoI've been dealing pain in the area you've described until the last few days. Unfortunately, I've gained to much weight to cross my leg over the leg but, I was tired of the pain and it was only getting worse. So with a little creativity, instead of laying on my back, I brought the leg out to the side with knee bent on the side that hurt. Then while keeping the other leg extended, I rolled over onto the bent leg. The streatch I was able to get actually allowed me to start walking again without the compulsory limp and almost "0" pain. Thankyou for helping. 😌

I've done daily hip stretches for ages and my hip/piriformis pain remains. I read that stretches are more of a sticking plaster option and to actually eliminate the pain you have to do strengthening exercises for the target area.

For years, I tried every stretching routine and regular adjustments until I was fed up with no improvement. I got a 2nd opinion from another chiropractor who specializes in sports injury rehab, and after a thorough exam it was revealed my L4 was bulging. I started the rehab immediately, and after three weeks I was experiencing massive improvement. I recommend the same to anyone who's tried various stretching and strengthening exercises with no improvement.

Hello, Dr. Ennis, I have seen there are several videos you have posted regarding hip issues, but I haven't seen one for what has just happened with one of my hips. I apologize for the long message ahead of time, but a lot has happened over the past week. I came the long way around to being referred to an orthopedic doctor for my right hip. Just over a week ago, (Friday, July 7, 2023), I had severe enough pain in my right lower back (I believe it's called the right flank?) that I could not drive, and my wife drove me to the ER. A little about myself; 60 years old, very fit, 5' 9", 160lbs, 123 / 66 blood pressure, resting heart rate 54 to 56 bpm, on no medications for any medical conditions and just passed my annual physical with flying colors 2 DAYS before this incident! The ER staff seemed pretty sure what I was experiencing was kidney stones, although I was skeptical, because 2 to 3 weeks prior to this I had ultrasounds of my bladder and kidneys come back perfectly normal. After a CT scan on my abdomen and pelvis, all organs were normal, including kidneys with no kidney stones present. The scan did show diverticula on my colon, but with no evidence of diverticulitis. ER doctor told me I have diverticulosis, would have to eat more fibre, and do not lift heavy weights to the point of straining. All panicked, my wife and I researched all of the things I should have over 3 or 4 days that wasn't solid food. Bone broth, aloe vera juice and fruits and vegetables/greens whipped up in a magic bullet to be able to drink (think consistency of apple sauce). One week later (yesterday, Friday, July 14th) I still had sharp pain in my lower right flank, with no other symptoms of what the doctor told me I had. Everything we researched about diverticulosis and diverticulitis did not point to what was going on with my pain. The only thing that matched was me being 60 years old. I went to an Urgent Care that has a doctor with previous ER experience, so I thought I would get a good second opinion. The Urgent Care doctor totally agrees that the evidence of diverticula on my colon has nothing to do with the pain in my lower back. As there IS NO PAIN with diverticulosis, it is only discovered during a colonoscopy or a CT scan like I had done. This doctor told me the problem is in my hip! He referred me to an orthopedic practice, and told me they would do a scan or x-ray of the area to determine what was going on with my hip and / or back on the right side. I realize I cannot get medical advice from a comment section on a video on KZfaq, but I am wondering if you have heard of something similar, a lower right back (flank) sharp pain with no other symptoms. The last two days, it has been very painful in the morning, but as the day progresses, it starts to go away, and by mid-afternoon, I don't really notice it. But it has been a week, and the pain is always there in some form or another. Thank you for any advice or opinion on what it could be and what course of action I could take to verify what the issue is. Have a great rest of your weekend! Marc

The waistband of your shorts are digging into the area of your hip that may be invoking this reflex.

The fascia (like the filmy skin on a chicken breast) gets stuck to the muscle when things start to get tight. The Derma edge allows you to get gliding in these layers by gentle pressure to the area. This pressure increases fluid movement allowing things to unstick. Because fascia is strong, we aren’t releasing the fascia, but getting the layers to glide, over one another. Because some of this fascia lies so close to the surface, we don’t often have to press deep to make a change. And, we there are receptors in the skin that respond to gentle, longer strokes which tell the brain to help relax the muscle. I created it while I was being diagnosed with Lyme so I could work on myself. One tool works for the whole body and it’s easy to hold. It’s made in the US (down the road from me:) and made of aluminum. Those reasons are why the cost is what it is. There is another tool called the sidekick which is multiple tools and over $100. I tried to make mine as reasonably priced as I could:)
