In this installment of backcountry flying basics we review the important skills necessary to safely land the aircraft after a power loss. Since this can happen at any time during takeoff, climb-out, and at altitude, we take the opportunity to break down the steps to complete a safe landing at all phases of flight. We apply the basic acronym of Airspeed (pitch for best glide), Airfield (select a suitable landing space), Airplane (time permitting try a restart of the engine). Throughout this simulated engine out training period, we discuss variables related to engine-out operations and best practices depending on when they occur. So grab a flight instructor and go practice some of these skills if it's been a while since you've done them...you'll be more confident if you happen upon the bad day and need them!!
