Back Garden Bonsai

2 жыл бұрын

Part 4 of my lemon bonsai started from seed in 2016. This year I let it grow through winter and cut it back a few times.

Good work! My citrus lime keeps suffering every winter then just about recovers each summer.. perhaps I should put it in a grow tent every winter...

Wow! I've grown citrus in the past but never as bonsai. Had no idea of the rootage they're capable of. Brilliant taming of the beast!

Your citrus is growing some nasty thorns! My seven month old lemon is also starting to grow long thorns.

Yeah they get massive. I normally just snip them every now and again. that usually removes the risk!

Look how much the soil is raising over the pit… the lemon is screaming for a repot!!! Maybe the roots are a bit unbalanced, but I love the big foot on which the tree seems standing! Another gorgeous trees of yours! Well done!

cheers, yeah what ever way it germinated its always had that one "foot" part of the roots. it looks kind of werid, but maybe it in a few years it will be of more interest :)

This is spooky as was just looking at my very messy little lemon tree, lots of flowers and some notions of fruit and thinking about how to prune it in the spring. I am not sure I'm going to do such a harsh root pruning,but I may be needed to get any kind of nibari. I keep mine in the study on the window sill over winter it seems happy enough. maybe next year it will start to look better.

ahh you are getting flowers, thats a great sign. hopefully mine will one day too. and as for root pruning, just take your time, slowly work at it. :)

Looks good. What kind of lights did u have it under in the grow tent? Lemons are awesome, seldom used for bonsai………. hint hint……. the moss looked great……. keep it in the small pot, root prune it tough (like u did). And repeat every 2-3yrs. Keep up the good work!

Cheers, its just a fairly standard LED grow light.i think its only 50w. i cant remember. but yeah they are not used enough. i see many try them, but they usually repot them too early and kill them :/

Daggum, killer root work again, brother. I wonder why it’s having such a slow wake-up? Did it not like the defoliation? Too soon on the root work? Too aggressive? I hope it comes back strong over the next couple months! Do you cut those thorns? Or just let them be?
@BackGardenBonsai
@BackGardenBonsai 2 жыл бұрын
yeah i cut the thorns, as they are a health hazard hahah. and i think i went to hard on the roots, but it will be fine :)

Hey friend. I have a kumquat tree that died this winter. I thought so anyway, past few weeks it has sprouted new leaves at the base of the plant. I'm planning on trunkchopping it and making it a small broomstyle bonsai from it. What do you think is the best time to do that? Cheers :)
@BackGardenBonsai
@BackGardenBonsai 2 жыл бұрын
If it’s nearly died I would wait until it’s recovered and strong enough to handle any work. …if the trunk is dead and that’s why it’s only sprouting at the base. Then it’s doesn’t matter when you cut it back as your just removing deadwood
@zoutewand
@zoutewand 2 жыл бұрын
@@BackGardenBonsai thank you! The top portion died, the bottom is fine. Its def deadwood. I'll let it stay like that until next year. Should I remove a portion of the dead branches to decrease decay or can I let it stay? Much appreciated.
@zoutewand
@zoutewand 2 жыл бұрын
It's one of those standard shaped fruit trees. Round canopy, exposed stem at the bottom. The top 1/3rd died.
