Back Garden Bonsai

Күн бұрын

Part 3 of my lemon bonsai started from seed in 2016. This year I let it grow through winter and cut it back a few times.

i genuinely look forward to your sunday uploads. you are the only bonsai channel that every video has some kind of progress involved. its great to see! i subbed a few weeks back and have now watched every video. Keep up the good work, and all the best.

Cheers, i appreciate that! :) but yeah, i love the progressions haha. Its just annoying that they are so slow/take so long but if i make enough videos about one tree it will be cool to watch it slowly change over the years

Shit man, you’d think you’d have a little more melanin in your skin by June, but hey…that’s Ireland for ya! Killer tree. You really go for it from day one with the little pots. Impressed you were able to break up that root ball. Well played as always.

Keep up the great work. I sat my little lemon bonsai next to my laptop so we could watch this video together. I'm pretty sure my lemon was inspired by yours; I could only stare in disappointment at my twig in a pot.

Love these videos! I am also growing Lemon "Pre Bonsai" from seed, inside under artificial light also, thrilled to see your progress, I have had a lot of necessary pruning due to height restrictions and now it is time to pick a style for them, I have 4, all where planted at the same time. Would love any information you would give. Thank you.
@BackGardenBonsai
@BackGardenBonsai 2 жыл бұрын
Ahh sounds very cool. hopefully they are going well. As for pruning it depends what you are trying to achieve. No point styling if you are trying to thicken them, or no point just cutting them back hard if you are trying to style them. I am just letting my grow and then cutting it back... after a few years it might have developed some character and then i can make some decisions then. when they are young there is no real rush for any of this kinda stuff. :)

@@BackGardenBonsai Thank you! They are about 3 to 4 years old, I did not keep records for any of my plants, I am trying to do better now, they all have a woody trunk and yes I do want to thicken them.

Love your work! Been working on a lemon tree bonsai from a seed for a little over a year now, and since last Fall growth has stopped, and the leaves are pale yellow. Any suggestions on a fertilizer that might bring some life (and color) back into it?
@BackGardenBonsai
@BackGardenBonsai 2 жыл бұрын
Cheers. mine is actually quite yellow now too. I just use normal fertilser. like standard miracle grow. but you have to be careful its not overwatered or even underwatered. as this can cause yellow leaves in lemons too.

I'm making a couple tangerine bonsai trees. Yours looks so good and happy, mine the leaves are tacoing a lot, and they just doesn't look super happy but they are growing decently. Are they really heavily nitrogen hungry? Is the soil PH important? Or maybe it's my lower humidity? Hope mine looks as happy as yours at some point
@BackGardenBonsai
@BackGardenBonsai Жыл бұрын
usually if the leaves hold up like that it means they are a little dry, so i would double check on that. As for nitrogen, i dont know. i would say its about the same as any other tree. i certainly dont feed it any more. PH... maybe a little. i do add some ericaceous compost into the mix to help, but i am not sure how much of a difference it makes.

Glad to have discovered you today. I see you have a mars hydro. Do you keep these shohin trees indoors even in the summer? I love your rosemary and I think you've convinced me to try one too. So far I have a ficus kiki and a cotoneaster.
@BackGardenBonsai
@BackGardenBonsai 2 жыл бұрын
Cheers. yes. anything in my mars hydro tent is tropical-ish, so it gets to enjoy the sun in there. rather than the miserable summers we get here. definitely try a rosemary. they are good fun, not as easy as cotoneaster, but not crazy difficult

Thanks Ian! I'm so glad to have gotten through nearly your whole archive and I love how you deliberately document the plants each month and can show progress. I don't see that a lot in other bonsai channels. Please keep at it! And glad to see your thumb injury wasn't too major and you're as good as new now.

How long do you leave your grow light on for? Also where do you leave your tree, outside or inside?
@BackGardenBonsai

well i leave the tree inside. under the grow light. if i over winter it, it would be in the shed. As for times. i change it quite a lot throughout the year. to basically mimic the natural light pattern
