Wow! This was EXACTLY what I needed. I was getting stuck on the chase. No one explains it and the toys make it easier to understand 😂! My neighbors can now put away their lawn chairs and popcorn. This comedy show dinner theater is now over! Thank you!

Excellent video. It's all about the chase vehicle. All the other tutorials just show how to turn the trailer into the spot, but never mentioned anything about bringing the towing vehicle back inline. This is where all the confusion comes into play when you're new. You get the trailer in, but your tow vehicle is all crooked, and as you try to straighten it out, your trailer swings out of place, and the sweats start to come out, and the cussing starts. I've learned that as soon as you see the trailer going in the direction that you want, start to straighten out your tow vehicle slowly.

Ditto! I'm a wife who is now trailering on her own after joining a group called Sisters on the Fly. People say "follow the trailer" or "chase the trailer" and I'm like "what the heck, the trailer follows my truck!". Now I understand! Thank you.

Great video. I'm a truck driver also, so I was watching this video with "critical eyes"..nice job!! If I may, I would like to also suggest that new RVs go out and buy some cheap orange cones and take them to a wide open area to practice backing before going on a trip. When I got my CDL (trucker's license), we had 3 weeks of driving in a practice lot before they would take us on the road. Having the visual and then being able to actually do what we saw was a great way to sharpen the skills.

OMG, thank you so much for this. Very helpful. Pretty much a newbie for my travel trailer, and have backed into camp sites successfully all but one time. That time, I had to maneuver it in two different directions, two different turns. And there were people watching, they came out of their rv's to watch and make snide comments. luckily the gentleman next door to my site, offered to back it in for me. He did it beautifully, and then told me he was a professional truck driver. If felt somewhat better after that. I have to say, I didn't try to converse or make nice with those others who made the snide comments during our stay there.

“You’re good, you’re good...STOP!!!“ This is us! Love this video tutorial! I have never backed our unit (42+ feet) but this has given me the confidence. I have had wrong thinking about where to position when you approach the site. I always thought you should be in the middle of the road but you clearly showed that you should be hugging the site side. Tell your son thanks for letting you use his toys for props-great visual!

I love this video-it was _exactly_ the kind of illustration I was looking for before my first backing. Thank you so much for illustrating it from the bird's eye view and speaking in detail about each of the steps. I especially appreciate the tips such as trying to pull in on the driver's side, or pull up and past the campsite before backing in. I really am much more confident to go out the first time thanks to this instructional video.

When you "grab" the bottom of the steering wheel with your hand (instead of the top part of the wheel) it really does help for many to think "as I have my hand on the bottom of the steering wheel and I want the trailer to go to the left, I push my hand to the left (which is actually turning the wheels to the right if your hand is on the top of the steering wheel) and the trailer goes that direction you move your hand if it is at the bottom". I have used this for years and I am so happy to hear you teaching this philosophy. I have helped so many people back up trailers just by telling them about grabbing the bottom of the wheel. You rock!

I thought this was pretty lame at first, but I really like seeing it from a 'birdseye' point of view. One thing you might put in is about OVERCORRECTION. After putting my trailer in the driveway by myself (and only having taken the trailer out a couple of times), at the end of my ordeal, I finally realized my problem was overcorrecting. It is really hard to hold yourself back from turning that wheel all the way the other direction when the trailer is going wrong. You did mention slow, small turns, but it might be good to emphasize that a bit in there somewhere. Newbies, like me, tend to freak out and overcorrect, haha!

Best illustration i have seen to date! Excuses not needed for the toys because they are a scale model of what is actually happening! Out of desperation, i downloaded a game called "Cargo Parking". It requires you to back a farm tractor with trailer into a highlighted spot. You turn the steering wheel with your finger and you only have backward and forward gear. I think what makes backing up so hard is the point of rotation (the truck-trailer hitch point) is moving. If it was stationary, it would be just like drawing a circle with a compass. but with the point of rotation moving, the back of your trailer is actually drawing an ellipsoid, which is quite hard to picture. I am a newby and cant back my 42' fiver even into my driveway, but i always look at the trailer tires. the path the trailer tires are going is the exact path the trailer, or at least the "center" of the trailer is going. Thanks again for the detailed, on point, analysis!!

I'm not a professional at doing this, but I have trained dogs. Dogs do not understand conversations and sentences. That's gibberish to them. They understand single words and hand signals that are taught to them. Drivers/backers do much better when the spotter (with prior agreements) gives one word requests and/or various hand signals. Also, to be a good spotter, one must be moving as the trailer is moving, so as to not be out of position. I recently spotted a guy who was backing in a 35 foot 5th wheel into a space, where the "street" was very narrow. He had a back spotter, so I volunteered to be his front spotter, watching the distance from the front of his huge truck to obstacles across the "street" that he wanted to avoid. I darted from one side of the front to the other side of the front of his truck, depending upon which way he was turning at a given moment. I held both hands up into a position that was like a football referee motioning that a field goal is good. I continually moved my open, flat hands either closer or farther apart to show the driver how close he was to his closest obstacle. I didn't have to yell and scream. Just hand distance signals and being in continual proper position. I also seems to me that (I don't know for sure) single axle trailers are much more sensitive to turns than double axle trailers, so that steering wheel movements should be more subtle. Can someone who's handled both single and double axles comment on this for me?

One thing I would add (being I have very limited experience). Is, if you're you're going to tow something. "Come back" to this video or any other instruction video that you're comfortable with. And refresh your memory the day before or just before you're heading out. To keep the tactics fresh in your mind. Instead of watching the video weeks/months/years before trying to maneuver a trailer. At least, that's what I'm going to do most of the time - Refresh. Great instructional video...👍

Exactly what I've been needing for advice as a newbie. Everyone just says "follow it in" but what the heck does that mean? You explain it. Excellent video. Ty!
