Ray. I am a total beginner and had to have someone else back up my fifth wheel into my first back-in site (I didn’t ask him, I think he got tired of watching me struggle). Your video is excellent! I can SEE the theory that goes along with the back in procedure. I can’t thank you enough for taking the time to help us beginners. Especially liked the part that dealt with problems you could come across, not just how to back in. Thank you again. God Bless...

We just returned from our second fifth wheel trip. I was stressing about backing, haven't back like this since my CDL test 11 years ago. I watched this video several times and 1,736 miles later and my wife and I are still in love. Thanks for your great videos and helping my wife and I stayed married!

One thousand thank yous for making this video and sharing your expertise!! My husband was having a hard time backing in when the road was fairly narrow (of course, I was not much help figuring out what was going wrong). After watching this video, it is clear he was leaving the truck in the jacked position too long. Using the model truck really helped explain things.

Once in your site it is advisable to relax the horizontal tension on your trailer axles by pulling straight forward a few feet and then straight back. This allows the trailer axles to track straight before sitting for period of time. If not the torsion over time can cause misalignment of the axles and will cause unusual tire wear patterns.

This is very well presented, and really covers all the bases of backing a trailer. I am a twenty-six year veteran of driving big rigs with 53' trailers, so backing our 23' travel trailer is a breeze for me. Your final point about "G.O.A.L." is spot on. This is the mantra of the professional driver, and is drilled into us by our safety dept. There is no shame in getting out to check, but there is great shame in hitting something and damaging equipment and property. Happy Trails!

+Allen Hare Thanks! I find the hardest thing to back up is my wife's little 17-foot boat trailer. Has a single axle and any little bit of oversteer sends it off path quickly. On the steep ramps, I lose sight of it. But practice makes perfect and GOAL get her in the water

This is a VERY helpful and outstanding video. Have been RVing for 9 years with a 35 foot fifth wheel. Its true that experience is a great teacher but it could take a very long time to master backing up if you only camp several times each year. And I have found that I have reached a plateau and wasn't going any further UNTIL I watched this video. There are many well-meaning people at campsites who try to help but actually confuse the issue and there are other "backing up" videos but (in my opinion) none as helpful as this on. Thanks Gypsy George-Henderson, Nv.

Thank you for your help. It has been years since I hauled a trailer and we just bought a 21 ft. fifth wheel to take across Canada. Backing it up makes me nervous but your ideas certainly help me feel better. Tomorrow will be my first test. I needed the reminder to be patient and to not worry about what others may be thinking. Truckers use the acronym G.O.A.L. "Get Out And Look". Even if you have a spotter. If there's any question in your mind, get out and see it with your own eyes. Also, it's never advisable to back a trailer on your blind (passenger) side. I will open my door (while the trailer is jacked, you can close the door and use your mirrors to back straight up) so I can lean out a bit to get a clear unobstructed view of the whole rig.

Very well done And I think I understand the concept of my situation after watching this but I'm in a 45 degree spot that looks like this / / / / (The top of those dashes being the road) Let's say I'm parked in space two but I'm a bit too close to the line and my pop out is a few inches over the line so I need to move more towards the middle What would yall say is the simplest way to achieve this?
@LoveYourRV
@LoveYourRV 5 жыл бұрын
I often find the easiest is to just pull out and start over and re-back it in. Or you could pull forward doing sort of an S maneuver to move the trailer over slightly and then back it in straight. Or pull all the way forward then turn the truck wheel the opposite of the way you want the trailer to go until its wheels are where you want then turn the other way until it slowly straightens out as it slides back into the spot. Being a popup, you likely only have a single axle trailer so try and keep from oversteering, just small movements of the steering wheel or the trailer will easily begin to jackknife. Cheers, Ray

Good tips. How about a demo on backing in where the campsite is on the passenger side. That is so hard for me because you can’t see anything!
@LoveYourRV
@LoveYourRV 6 жыл бұрын
One tip is to have your spotted stand on the front passenger side of the truck to direct the backing. Take it slowly, stop a few times and have them run back and forth side to side as you go making sure you aren't going off track or hitting anything, take your time. Get out several times and look. I also find it handy to turn and look out the back window when the truck is on the jacked position as I can see the trailer tires tracking. Like a driver's side back-in go to a parking lot and practice blind back-ins to see how your particular rig turns and where your lines of sight will be and not be. Cheers, Ray

Rather than pulling straight past the spot you are going to back into, approach and pass your spot as far to left as possible. As you pass your spot, angle the truck to the right so that you begin your backing already angled toward your parking spot. This keeps you from having to jack the trailer as hard. While backing up, always watch the driver side wheels. If they are as close as possible to your side of the parking spot you should be good on the passenger side. The only thing I'd rely on a spotter for is to watch my blind side and to make sure I don't back up too far.

Love Your RV you're welcome! I'll give your wife the benefit of the doubt and say she's the exception, but 24 years in the drivers seat has taught me to trust my own eyes over those of a spotter. Thanks for all your videos, I'm really enjoying the series!

I had written a companion blog post to the video and one of the big tips was G.O.A.L. Get Out And Look. :) In tricky backup situations like angled blind back-ins with trees, I'm sometimes out of the truck 3-4 times. Usually, its the folks with an ego about it and refuse to get out and have a look that ends up crashing into something. I've also recently installed a wide angle back up camera that helps a little too. Cheers! Ray www.loveyourrv.com/back-fifth-wheel-trailer/

My problem is, I get the trailer going great but my truck isn't straight. I guess "chasing" at the right time is key but it seems like I get the trailer messed up when straightening the truck!

Yeah, it will take a bit of practice to learn when to start chasing. Every truck and trailer combo will be a bit different. Pulling ahead a bit and resetting helps. Cheers! Ray

Quick question, when I back up a tractor trailer, the trailer moves and does not go in a straight line like a car. When I am backing up and I want to have my trailer end move to the left, I steer to the right. When I want to move my trailer end to the right, I turn the wheels to the left. When I am behind the wheel and I loose sight of my right end on my mirrors, I move my steering a bit to the right and my truck goes straight. When I am behind the wheel and I loose sight of my left end on my mirrors I turn the wheel a bit to the left and the truck and trailer straightens. Thinking like this is the opposite of driving a car. How do I control my trailer from going all over the place? I keep loosing my trailer when I want to go back in a straight line and get lost. Even though I know what I am supposed to do, It is a different story when you actually try to do it. Is there any tips like when you mentioned putting your hand on the bottom center of your wheel? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
@LoveYourRV
@LoveYourRV 9 жыл бұрын
gtarealestatephoto Doing everything slow at first and very small steering corrections is the key, then it takes practice. If your off path just pull ahead and reset, and try again . Eventually your brain gets the hang of it. I find it is helpful to get out and look quite often to see what went wrong if I'm off course. I had fun today, I went down a twisty gravel desert narrow road to get to a boondocking spot just to find about a 1/2 mile in there was a large puddle from the recent rains stopping me. Had to back the trailer out the whole way. Now there is some practice! haha.

Thanks again for the advice. I will go slow and get out of the truck as many times as it takes. In the end I hope to develop a strong neurological pattern in my Central Nervous System soon. I am sure it was for for you today :) Live life, don't just exist. Stay Healthy.
