Backing into Amtrak's NEW Denver Terminal

Amtrak Train #6, the eastbound California Zephyr, backs into the brand new Denver Union Station, which will soon support both light and commuter rail. The throat of the new terminal is non-interlocked and will remain so for the foreseeable future. Amtrak trains must snake through the BNSF yard before reversing into the station.
Such are the contradictions in American rail transport.

great shot. wish we have Amtrak service were I live including a beautiful transit center. Nope! Columbus Ohio doesn't have shit for passenger rail service. All we have is crap bus service and out of date interstate highways. Columbus Ohio needs one too...

I am glad that Amtrak is going to so many states in America. Amtrak deserves to have a nice new terminal in Denver. I hope that Congress will give support funds to Amtrak.

+Bobby Harvey The Temporary Station was so that they could finish this masterpiece. 8 Tracks rather then 4 in the old setup, plus level boarding commuter rail, and light rail 2 blocks west (actually a shorter walk then everyone imagined)

Sure doesn't look like it did when I was last there. The area where the tracks are now was just a vacant lot. Our special left from there heading to Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks. And finally ended in Seattle where the PVs went there own ways. 9 days Denver to Seattle. :-D

So Amtrak will always have to back into the depot? I didn't see any through tracks there. Also why are there so many tracks and extra Amtrak cars? Only 1 route serves the station. Commuter rail is coming too right? Sorry, just from Eugene, Oregon. Think this new depot looks sweet, just confused with the layout with just 1 Amtrak train

+Amtrak507 They turned Denver Union Station into a transportation hub when they redid it recently. There is a bus terminal below ground now for city buses. Amtrak, of course goes through there, and they are starting commuter rail pretty soon. There is also light rail in Denver that stops at Union Station. Plus there are also hotels and retail areas in or right next to the building. DUS has become quite a place.

Having recently caught the California Zephyr from Emeryville, CA. to Chicago, IL., I was rather amused by the way the train backed into both Denver and Chicago. It seemed like a terribly ungracious way to enter a city train station, almost apologetic, like someone really screwed up the station design. But apart from this peculiar practice, I really enjoyed the trip.

Backing into Denver Terminal is similar to the way the Cardinal backs into, or used to back into Cincinnati's terminal, and Washington DC for the Capital Ltd. Seems odd though that Amtrak would do it that way...seems incomplete. What's on the other side of the terminal in Denver, or is that where the line ends...Anybody know?
@williamgant5463

+Rodney Brown The Pepsi Center. But Amtrak approaches from the North East on Westbount moves, and Departs to the North West, and vise versa. DUS is aligned north south. There is no way to get back on the track to Arvada from the south, that track runs straight to Colorado Springs. The only time this would really be a problem is if we get Amtrak Service south to Colorado Springs and Pueblo, which is currently being talked about, but with some clever trackwork, you could easily still depart from the north end of DUS, and end up on the southbound tracks, its just going to be slow speeds and as sharp a curve as the interlocking at Chicago Union Station.

This is actually common at a number of terminals. Even at Chicago's Union Station, the majority of tracks are stub ended. However, since most trains originate or terminate there, nobody notices. Lastly, I believe the City of New Orleans backs out of Chicago onto the St Charles Air Line while the inbound CONO backs in. Maybe someone can clarify that.

American trains and railroads are a mess. I have ridden trains in France and Italy and enjoyed it but here it is an ordeal at best. Even Thailand with its somewhat dated equipment does a better job than Amtrak.
@Liamflynnphoto
@Liamflynnphoto 8 жыл бұрын
Funny you say that. You get that from one video on a station that's brand new and you have to back into. Most of amtraks stations don't do that. The trains I've ridden on are comfortable and service was great. The Amtrak Acela has accounted for so many passengers between NYP and DC that some airlines have stopped flying to DC all together. So if we're doing such a bad job then tell me this: why do people keep riding to train?
