Amtrak's California Zephyr - REAR VIEW - Departing Denver

Railfan window view leaving Denver Union Station on the former D&RGW (now UP), heading west to climb the front range of the Rockies. The beginning of the clip shows the cutting of of the CHI-DEN Sleeper (to be picked back up by train #6). Filmed on June 20, 2014.

I'm surprised that we still run passenger trains on freight track. That track was only in fair shape in some of those spots. We need a major passenger rail upgrade in this country.

Your wishes will, unfortunately, never eventuate. The USA is not disposed towards a modern, high-speed railway passenger service.

The tracks are owned by freight RRs and where else would Amtrak run.

Compare this to any station in Europe or Japan. SNAIL!... Why? It's the most frustrating thing about riding any public rail system in America- WHY ARE WE GOING SO SLOW!!!!!

Are they not using the old Union Station anymore? I always used to love pulling out of those old platforms on a D&RGW dome car and winding up the mountain through the Moffat tunnel. That old station is leftover from the days when American passenger railroading was still great.

I vist denver alot but only have i only taking the airport train to union. People the reason they added thesase tracks was becase was to make union better and be able to take busses and light and comuter rails It went slow becasue at the time they were still building the lines

The train is passing under one of Denver's light-rail lines at 16:45. Don't know which station this is.

So if the tracks end at the station, every Amtrak train into Denver has to back in? How many trains do they get a day?

+felix the cat trains from the former c,B &q, now BNSF have always had to back into Denver Union Station coming from Chicago

+felix the cat At the moment, there are only 2 Amtrak trains a day (one in each direction). There will soon be many commuter trains as well, but they are electric with cabs on both ends so they won't have to technically back in or out. The station used to be straight through, but sometime in the 1980's I believe they pulled the tracks to the south along with most of the original station tracks in order to make room for more development downtown (though several of the bridges across Cherry Creek still exist as pedestrian bridges). Trains have had to reverse into the station ever since, and now there are apartment towers to the south so building tracks that way again would be impossible.

1:54 Why is that person walking the tracks with baggage? It's still trespassing on the tracks even if you're a passenger for another train.

Probably head-end crew that just finished up her duty on the inbound #5. Walking to the parking lot to go home. Or a lady afraid to "fly" and bailed before it got going too fast.
