I've been an ultralight backpacking fan since reading Colin Fletcher's The Man Who Walked Trough Time in the mid 70s. I had to make a lot of my own equipment back then and was limited by the materials of the time. It's amazing what wonderful ultralight equipment we have today. Thanks for sharing!

Love watching your videos! I am local and can easily get to the places you are showing. So excited for you to do the Wonderland Trail too. My hubby and I are doing it next year. I love my CNOC Vecto bag! I love the wide mouth opening. I love that it fits with my Sawyer filter. I love how durable these bags are. The bags that came with my Sawyer filter are absolute garbage. I love my Sawyer filter, just not the bags that they come with.

I know many consider a pillow a luxury item out on trail, but I honestly could not get a good nights sleep out on trail without it. For me, these 3 ounces are necessary.

So fun to see this--this trail was my first backpacking trip and is basically in my own backyard! ☺️ It’s a beautiful area! However, you should know that bear canisters are not required everywhere in the Olympic National Park, only in some areas. In the Staircase area, you can just hang your food.

Glad you enjoyed this video! You are correct. Bear canisters are not required in the Staircase area. However they are required in Enchanted Valley, which is where I went backpacking the weekend after this trip and it was awesome! I made a video featuring the Enchanted Valley trip as well. I live 30mins from staircase in Shelton. Lucky me for being close to many Olympic trails and make Cushman is like my home. ❤️ I was just there last weekend on the Upper Big Creek Loop Trail at Mile marker 9 just a little past staircase. :)

This week's questions.... What is the proper ratio of bite size Snickers bars to days on the trail? And can said Snickers bars be used as a camp game making words using the letters on the individual wrappers? And if so, what if you get no vowels??? Also, I'm planning to return my Therm-a-rest NeoAir XLite because it makes so much noise when I fidget while trying to sleep. Your's is a slightly different model, does it make that "crinkle crinkle" sound? And lastly, my wife LOVES her Kula Cloth!!!

The proper Snickers bite size ratio doesn’t depend on the days on trail, but the type of days you’re having on trail. I found my consumption of these were always much higher when there was bad, wet weather and steep climbs. I want to play this camp Snickers game!!! The NeoAir Xtherm still makes some noise (I feel like they all do on trail), but not nearly as much as the Xlite. That thing is like sleeping on a bag of potato chips. Don’t get me wrong. I’d often hike out of town with a bag of chips strapped on my pack, but that doesn’t mean I wanted to sleep on them. The Xtherm has much more insulation, making it way more quiet. Yay for the Kula cloth!!

just to chime in from a perspective of a nremt, you should carry 2 triangle bandages, they can be used for everything from a arm sling to a tourniquet, and so many other things, also they weigh almost nothing for the value

I highly recommend joining The Mountaineers if you're here in the PNW. Not only for the day hikes and trips, but they have classes on pretty much everything related to the outdoors. Plus, you'll meet cool, likeminded people who want to be outside just as much as you do. It's a wonderful non-profit organization and its all led by volunteers. The trip I recently went on was a backpacking trip through The Mountaineers and it was awesome.

You carry a bear can when required, do you carry bear spray with you as well? I have a week off at the end of the month, planning to hit GC for a couple days, thanks for a few ideas.

Thanks for watching! To answer your question, no I don't carry bear spray and that's by choice. If I were hiking in grizzly country, I might change my mind. For this trip, I was perfectly happy with just having my bear canister for all of my food and scented items though, all 2+ pounds of it! hahahahaha!

@@TheHungryHiker I forgot to ask earlier, you shared that you got a new spoon, are you going to do bright colored tape or bright colored lanyard for it? They’re not the greatest but I check Walmart’s clearance section sometimes and found Omari trail long plastic spoon, $.55 cents, fits my needs, but a little heavier than titanium, added some bright yellow tape to my handle.

Yes, I got a new, long handled spoon. It’s the same one I lost last summer and yes, I plan on putting some bright colored tape on it so I don’t lose it on trail again. 😂

We actually saw a bear just outside of our camp as we were coming back from our day hike on this trip. It was a good reminder on why bear canisters are required in the park. With bears, you want to make sure they know you're there and that you make noise. They usually want nothing to do with you so make noise, don't leave your food or scented items out and whatever you do, never get between a momma bear and her cubs.

Where did you camp?, I was at dry Creek last weekend first time in the Olympics, fell in love with the place. Milage and elevation gain would be enough information if you don't feel like giving out to much information, oh what time of year was it the Park was closed last weekend, not sure if was do to snow pack or just to early in the year. Been searching KZfaq since I got home. Your the best, I too love to eat on the trail. Keep up the good work. Your content is GREAT 👍

Keep in mind, I put together this video almost two years ago now so whatever the conditions are like out there now are going to be completely different than what they were in my video. We did this one at the end of April back in 2021. For this trip, we camped at Camp Pleasant and day hiked up to Nine Stream Camp. Glad you've been enjoying my content!! Thanks for watching!

Thank you! For rehydrating purposes, the freezer bags are the way to go. They can withstand the boiling water. I'd recommend using some sort of cozy as well to help keep the heat in when you're rehydrating a meal. I made mine. I'm planning on doing Segments 1-5 of colorado trail with some friends soon. Will be my first through hike. Do you carry any type of solar battery pack? I have an Anker battery pack, but it's about a pound. I know every ounce counts.

I don’t use any type of solar charger. They typically depend on direct sunlight to charge and that’s not an option we often have on trail up here in Washington.

For day hikes, using the pit toilet at the trailhead usually does the trick for me. If I ever need to go to the bathroom and I'm out on trail, I always have my poop kit with me. Find a place off trail and away from a water source, dig a hole 6-8 inches, do your business, cover it up and pack out your tp. Easy, breezy!

Do you sleep without pants or do you sleep in your hiking pants? Honestly asking. I prefer to sleep with less on but I’m afraid to do it while hiking in case I need to run away from something 😅.

It honestly depends on how hot/cold I am. In the warm summer months, I'll sleep in shots. For this trip, I started with wearing my leggings and was so warm by the middle of the night, I got down to my undies, with top and bottom. I'd much rather be too warm than too cold. I've had my fair share of cold nights and they were NOT fun.

Question for you...do you carry 1 smart water bottle and the bladder with extra water or extra bottles to fill before setting off after a water source? Thanks :-)

Great question! It all depends on where I'm heading and the water situation. If I know there's going to be a lot of water (for example, for this trip we knew we'd be hiking along a river the entire time), I'll only fill the 1 liter bottle and drink from that. If I knew it was going to be a long, waterless carry, I'd "camel" up at the water source by drinking a bunch of water and filling both my 1 liter bottle and my CNOC water bag. Hope that helps!

What do you use for navigation? GAIA GPS, All trails map etc?

For navigation on my day hikes and backpacking trips, I typically use Gaia. I love all of the map layers! If I'm hiking/backpacking/thru-hiking the PCT, I'll use the Guthook app for navigation. It's loaded with really good trail information and the comments for the waypoints are worth their weight in gold.

@@TheBlindGardener Oh no! I don't use AllTrails, but as long as you download your maps ahead of time, Gaia works great out on trail with your phone in airplane mode. Maybe practice on a short day hike before trying it out on a bigger trip. Good luck!

Yes, you are correct. I did come back with quite a few of the snacks, as I mentioned in my video. The thing about hiking and backpacking is often times it's hard to gauge how hungry/not hungry you'll be out there. I like to always carry more food than I actually need so I never have to worry about running out. Also, everyone is different and has different needs when out on trail. The cool thing about hiking and backpacking is you're always learning from the last trip and can use what you learn to fine tune things for the next one.

You should carry more food than you *think* even if you go for a day hike. You may get stranded, stuck, have to detour or you can come across someone who is injured and may need food or water 👍🏻

Nope, no bear spray. I don't carry bear spray with me on my hikes. That is a heck yes to the bear canister through for storing my food and scented items.

How do you fit that bear canister in your pack?

It's a tight fit, but how I pack it is I first put my quilt on the bottom and then put my bear canister in the middle of my pack on top of my quilt. Then I stuff everything else either around the bear canister and on top. I had some extra room inside the canister so I was able to put other things inside as well, making this fit even better in my pack. No matter how you pack your pack those, these suckers are heavy.

It's pretty common that pets are not allowed on trails and wilderness areas in national parks and for good reason including to protect protect pets (pets are prey out in the wild), to protect wildlife and to protect the fragile vegetation. Pets are allowed in national parks on paved roads, at campgrounds and in parking lots.
