🥾TAMARA COAST TO COAST WAY, episode 1: The Ugly.
My Worst Hiking Trail Ever: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly - And Why I Bailed
Episode 1: Plymouth (a really ugly start)
Hello!
Thanks for joining me for the first of my hiking trail vlogs from the Tamara Coast to Coast Way, a new 87-mile hiking trail along the Devon-Cornwall border. I’ll tell you how it really is in this series of 4 videos - because no one else seems to bother!
I solo hiked The Tamara Coast To Coast Way in April, but it turned out to be the worst trail I ever hiked and it started on day 1 - Plymouth to Blaxton. Relentless traffic, housing estates, pollution and noise - it was a depressing trudge and I was not a happy bunny, but I hope the video will make you smile. And, at least there was at a peaceful wild camp at the end of the day!
Thanks so much for watching :) I hope you enjoy it - don’t forget to like and subscribe so you don’t miss the next one. (This does make me happy! And part 2 was the best day - hiking 9 easy miles through the beautiful Tamar Valley AONB).
Let me know in the comments if you’ve hiked the trail too - what did you think, was it kinder to you than me?!
Until next time, happy hiking
Stephie x

That's very kind, thank you :) I hope to get much better - sometimes it's frustrating to want to run before you can walk haha! Learning something new is always fulfilling though, and it's lovely to find such inspiring films as yours along the way. I look forward to seeing more of your solo hikes in the frozen north!

There are definitely some things you can't change - like the tide and train timetables 😂 but the wonderful thing about hiking is that you never know what's ahead 😁 thanks for watching!

I live on the trail on the Torpoint side, it's the Plymouth section, tide issue, lack of water that have stopped us doing it. Just subscribed and will watch all your videos 😊

Oh that's so kind, thank you! It'll probably be a month or so off but I hiked a couple of other local trails last year and plan to make videos with the clips I have. I did the Dartmoor Way and the Two Moors Way (both start near Plymouth) and both of them were fantastic. Have you done either? There's a fair bit of tarmac on quiet lanes on the Dartmoor Way but it definitely doesn't disappoint when it comes to the views and lovely Dartmoor towns/villages! Lovely to meet you!

Great video. Not sold on that section of the route. Im not so keen on urban, but the countryside looks lovely.

The Tamar Valley Discovery Trail section is a lovely amble through the countryside but it's only about 30 miles long - most of the rest of it is a real trudge. Such a shame, it's a l missed opportunity I think.

Hi Yesterday I walked from near where the fox sculpture is to Bere Ferres railway station and have decided to take on the Tamar walk. Where on line can I find the route from Cremyll to the water treatment works at Ernesettle? Thanks Yesterdays walk was beautiful, the woods Blaxton and Whittacliffe and Lowell Dam just beautiful ❤️👍

Hi there, yes, that's the best section of the entire walk. You should be able to get downloadable gpx files from the Visit Tamar Valley website, if not you can buy their guidebook from there 😊

Well at least the day ended on a better note, with a stunning spot to camp. I'll be following this adventure, although from your notes below the video it might not have all gone as you'd hoped unfortunately. But, if it wasn't for the bad experiences, we wouldn't appreciate the good ones when we find them! (that's what I keep telling myself anyway...!) Good video!

It was a gorgeous camp spot - the deer barking during the night echoed right down the river, it was amazing. And you're right - bad experiences help you appreciate the good! The trail went from bad to worse for me, but what some people hate others love. Thanks so much for watching, I really do appreciate it :)

I did tamara way last week but started at lopwell dam as i live in plymouth and just didn't fancy the plymouth section. Tamara way is a tricky hike, especially with finding wild camping spots! Highly recommend visiting local pubs on route, people were so friendly and we met many lovely people on route 😊 xxx

How did you find it onwards from Lifton? There'd been so much tarmac already, that 18 miles of it that day ( with more to come the following day) was the nail in the coffin for me. Fast traffic, no views, feet dying on that surface, no amenities...just awful. The following day I was in Briderule and a local parish councillor approached me for a chat - apparently they had no idea a new trail was going straight through their village. He said he was surprised to suddenly see walkers coming through and assumed the trail finishes at the end of the village somewhere - he had no idea it was coast to coast and said he couldn't understand why you'd make that section part of the route (due to the roads). Interestingly he told me none of the farmers he'd spoken to had been approached about possible permissive paths to get walkers off the tarmac. It seems so short sighted, unbelievable really, that the 'trail makers' hadn't consulted local councils. If you know anyone else that's going to hike the trail let them know there's a new community shop just opened in Bridgerule! It's the perfect place for a pitstop - and of course well worth supporting local, as you say. If the powers that be had actually done any local consultation they'd surely have known it was going to open and could have been included in the guidebook! Rant over 🤣 Hope you're enjoying yet another gloriously sunny day - isn't it gorgeous 😎

@stephie_10milehike mostly lanes with just a few off-road bits all the way to tamar lakes where we had to finish due to running out of food and my friends' feet were to sore to carry on. ( massive blisters) . The route definitely needs a lot of improvement. Hopefully, more shops and campsites will become available as time goes on and definitely needs tweaks to the route to cut off so many lanes. They were pretty soul destroying at times! All said it was so nice to get away so no regrets!

@@barbarannjessep9363 I really don't think it was researched at al from a walker's point of view, hopefully though, as you say, there might be more amenities over time - though I'm not sure how they'll get rid of the tarmac unless they alter the route x

I live locally to the start of the trail .. and yes the Plymouth bit is crap , look at the Cornish Celtic Trail starts at st Germans
@stephie_10milehike
@stephie_10milehike Ай бұрын
Yes, I've already hiked that one!.I've done the whole of the South West Coast Path, the St Michael's Way and the Saints Way, so the only bit that's missing is the tiny bit from the coast to St Germans! Again, it's another trail that's made up of 3 pre-existing ones. Maybe one day I'll do it as the whole thing, but there are so many to choose from aren't there! Have you done the Tinner's Way? It's only about 17/18 down in West Penwith but it's absolutely stunning. It's unusal because it's away from the coast but it takes in loads of neolithic sites - stone circles, standing stones, etc. It's fascinating. It starts in St Ives and finishes in St Just so if you haven't done it and you're ever down this way I highly recommend it :)

It's atrocious, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. The only section worth doing is the Tamar Valley Discovery Trail which is about 30 miles - and that was a trail in its own right beforehand. A fantastic opportunity (no doubt costing millions) missed 😒
