Testing out the 9x4 Stainless Steel Backwater Prop on a 1436 Jon Boat paired with a stock 13hp 420cc Predator Engine. This is the Backwater Swomp Lite Glider Kit for 12 to 16 hp engines.
THE BOAT SETUP:
1436 lt Alumacraft Jon Boat (would not recommend - get a tracker or something else other than an Alumacraft) {135lbs}
13hp Predator Engine by Harbor Freight (serial/model number 60349 [hemi-version]) {76lbs}
Swomp Lite Glider Kit for 12 to 16 hp engines {57lbs}
Custom front deck and floor {~75lbs}
Battery, trolling motor, fishing supplies, cooler, anchor, etc... = {~100lbs}
My weight = 150lbs
Total weight = 600 pounds
This 9x4 prop stayed in between 3400 and 3500 RPM's and I got a max speed of 16mph. This was with the lightest load this boat has had on it.
To utilize the full potential of this prop, you want to be at 3600 RPMs at a minimum. So I would either have to lighten the load on the boat even more or get more hp behind the prop by getting a bigger engine or doing a stage one upgrade to the current engine.
I would not recommend this prop to someone looking to increase their speed. You would need a very light boat and load with a 13hp engine that is hopped up or utilizing a bigger engine like a 16hp or greater. And not a Duromax 16hp single-cylinder engine, that wouldn't be enough, it would have to be the Briggs vanguard v twin 16hp engine but then you start to get into a different kit and most likely a bigger boat. For the 1436 and 13hp engine, I would not recommend it.

Still enjoying my time out on the water. The motor is still running and I'm able to get where I need too... just not as fast as I would have liked too

16 MPH you made it! I'm still digging your SPS kit but 16 is reasonable man that's pretty good
@JTgatoring

16mph is more than the 15mph I started with so this 9x4 is working better than the 8x4 prop, but I still thought it would get faster speeds than that. I guess I should just be more surprised that the thai kits are just that much faster

I like it 👍 Seems fast enough to me....but I guess that depends upon the distance you need to travel also. 👍

Very true FLORIDA JACK its a good speed for many people. Especially on a small lake like this one. The only issue I have with this speed, is that a cheaper thai kit is half the price and achieves higher speeds. Thats the main reason for trying to get it to go faster

JTgatoring I see. I’m familiar with this type of scenario...Your pioneering of Jon boat modifications will help others in the future when choosing their route. Good luck 👍

JT if you were running a rocky river bottom or stump filled swamp i would say the Backwater is a good choice but it will never outrun the Swamprunner kit.

Hey Bo, later on I would like to take my swamp runner to those places and test it out. I've yet to break an aluminum prop and I've had a few hard hits and side-swipes but it still hasn't broke yet. The backwater is built like a tank and would definitely handle that kind of stuff, I do not doubt it, but once I get some extra time, I would like to really see the limitations of a swamp runner because I've yet to find them

first off, thank you very much for your research and testing on all of these mud motors! i have a PPF wood duck 6.5 right now but have it sold and a Swamp Runner medium on order to run with a 13 on my built out 1440. i will run it alone 99% of the time. what would you recommend for props to add when i get mine in? i saw your good results with the 8.75 weedless. i have ordered the weed cutter bar with mine so we will see how that goes! thanks again for your help, when i get mine and shoot the walkthough video i will make sure to give you a shout out!

Hey Chris! I appreciate the support and really enjoy getting feedback like this. Congrats on getting a swamp runner! I wouldn't order anything separately right now. I'd probably build it out, get a tachometer on the engine and go run it. Watch swamp runner's how to dial it in video before going out and get your kit adjusted and dialed in. Once that happens, then you know if you can get a bigger prop (or if you even need a bigger prop). You may also want to order other things like a prop puller, extra prop nuts, bushing, ect.... So my point is, pay shipping once by running your kit, see what you need, and then order all at once. I highly recommend the 8.75 weedless prop. I really like the 8.5 hurricane if your engine can spin it, and I like the 9" for low RPM cruising at highier speeds = with a 8.5" standard prop at 3900 RPM is normally 18 mph and the 9" prop I can run at 2500 to 2800 RPM and get that same 18mph to 20mph. Just my preference and advice 😁

What size shaft?
@JTgatoring
@JTgatoring 4 жыл бұрын
65" shaft with this kit. They do offer a 55" shaft also

One thing you didn't bring up, is that you worked out the vibrations ( even when you worked the hell out of the tail). What did you do?
@JTgatoring
@JTgatoring 4 жыл бұрын
Vibration is still there. If you look at my hands you can see a little bit of the shake but recording this footage with a low frame rate, it will not show the vibration, it smooths it out.

Still blows mind that you cant pull over 16 out of 13hp on that kit. Out of all the variables its has to be the length of the shaft. Its interesting that it is the cheap Thai kits have that the length. So its like spending considerably more money to lose 6mph. I would just a buy a surface drive at the American long tail price and get the benefits of a longtail and outboard combined.
@JTgatoring
@JTgatoring 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I'm not the happiest of people about the speed performance. I would, however, still choose a longtail over a surface drive though. The only benefit of a surface drive is the gear reduction, and reverse. With the surface drive, the prop is right behind the boat, so if you get high centered or stuck on land you can't reach any water when compared to a longtail you can reach out that 85" or 100" to keep you moving forward. Keep is simple and light with a 1436 and a 13hp engine to use it as a scout boat to find you hunting holes and make sure your hunting rig can make it there, and then use your big boat with a big engine and surface drive to take everyone there.

Hi dears! Please tell me about what program do you use, so that there is a speedometer on the screen in the lower left corner? Thank you in advance for your kind response.

You need a GoPro camera that has the GPS feature like the GoPro 7, GoPro 8, GoPro 9, and make sure the GPS is turned on. Then you have to use the GoPro editing software and then you're able to add it to the footage.

How come you don’t use or have a grab bar? Just asking I would really like to build a similar boat for north Central Florida Good video thanks
@JTgatoring
@JTgatoring 4 жыл бұрын
As for right now, I do not have a grab bar because I am continually switching out mud motors and running different kits so the handle position changes with each engine and changes where I stand. Once I choose an engine, then I will probably hook up the electric start on the engine and put in a grab bar. Thank you for the continued support Kenny

How did you get 20-23mph out of the 8.5 prop on the other video and only 16mph out of a 9.5 prop ??
@JTgatoring
@JTgatoring 4 жыл бұрын
So I got 23mph with a 9" prop on a swamp runner mud motor kit on this same engine. So its the same 13hp predator engine, but a different mud motor kit that was made by Swamp Runner. This mud motor kit is made by Backwater in this video. Each company has their own props and perform different. With the Backwater kit, the 8x4 prop got me 15mph.
