After having raw sewage back up in my friends basement and all her furnishings destroyed and the awful mess that had to be dealt with I'm going to install this valve. We'll get permits with the city of Portland even though their inadequate sewer system is the cause. I'm a contractor and your video is well made and shows clearly step by step how it is done. Thank you.

This value only stops the city's sewer from backing up. When the city's sewer fails and backs up this valve will close but everything you flush above that point will flood into the lowest point.

Yes, but it will be your own shit not some other people’s 😂 Most of the backup is short lived for 10-20 minutes, then it subsides. So only if your home happens to produce a lot of sewage at that moment, then you got an internal flood.

Hey its a 1 bag job now! It's so when his shit fails he doesn't have to work his ass off to fix it. You wish floors were 4" thick its as thick as the cement trucks bring. I've went through 2.5" and 4" 14" apart. Driveways should have 4" of base but I watched them pour a 2x4" thick slab on clay soil, in 10 years or less its going to sink. There is no clean out before the backflow valve? So how do you run a drain snake if let's say Roots invade the line between the house and main? There should be two cleanouts. In addition backflow should be serviced and inspected once a year.
@cityofwindsor
@cityofwindsor 9 ай бұрын
Good afternoon, the clean out is in the correct location just inside the building/basement foundation (right side of the photo), down stream/after the back water valve (right side of the photo is towards the street). We know this just based on the direction of the open valve flap an orientation of the T-Y. Eeling/Snaking towards the municipal main can take place at this clean out just inside the building face. Alternatively, from an exterior clean out at the property line (if one exists), towards the main or in the opposite direction back towards the building.
@toscanoplaster5603
@toscanoplaster5603 2 жыл бұрын
Do you need that clean out if you are using the backflow preventor that has a threaded clean out ? Also in our situation there's an above ground cleanout just outside the house ( a total of 3 feet from the backflow prevent preventor inside the house )
@cityofwindsor
@cityofwindsor 2 жыл бұрын
In Windsor, you do not need to install an additional cleanout if you install a backwater valve that has an integrated cleanout. A building cleanout on the exterior at grade is permitted as long as it is within 1 metre (3 feet) of the exterior foundation wall. @cityofwindsor
@cityofwindsor 2 жыл бұрын
Our Operations Department advises, the backwater valve is installed on the main sanitary pipe where it exits the building. All other piping is upstream of the backwater valve. The backwater valve stops the sewage surcharge from moving into other piping and coming up through other outlets such as floor drain and flooding all the piping in the house. If you capped only the basement sewer (floor drain), the other pipes would continue to fill to the level of the surcharge and if that level was above say, a basement shower, then the sewage would start coming out of the shower.

*My floor drain backs up. It's a 3 inches cast iron pipe about 25 years old. I had three different plumbers done their camera thingy, I had the chain knocker service done, hydrojet wash done and more over, I had the sewer lateral line outside my house, also replaced, but floor drain still backs up once in a while. I am told that I may need to replace the entire pipe under the basement floor with a new 4 inches PVC. That's quite a costly project. Is that the only solution or I can trying something else?* *One plumber told me that whenever we use a lil bit of extra toilet paper and flush it down the toilet, it will mostly result in the basement floor drain backing up. Is there a solution to this problem other then tearing down 50 linear foot of my basement floor?*
@cityofwindsor
@cityofwindsor 3 жыл бұрын
If the advice of a licensed plumbing contractor indicates that replacement is necessary, that is likely going to be the case, as aging pipes (e.g. cast iron) can degrade beyond the point of repair. If you live here in Windsor, the City of Windsor is unfortunately not able to assist with the portion that is considered private property. Available options will differ based on a number of factors, so seeking the advice of a qualified and licensed plumbing contractor remains your best choice.

If the backflow were to be installed right at the foundation wall (where the existing cleanout is), would it not make more sense that the cleanout for the section from the home to the street be installed just outside the foundation wall? the existing code is part grandfathered before manditory disconnect of weeping tile to sewer line and back flow installations existed.

In Windsor, the installation of a backwater valve (BWV) and building clean-out are subject to Part 7 of the Ontario Building Code (OBC). Residential property owners have the option of an interior or exterior backwater valve under the OBC and BWV program. We provide links for both type of valves: backwatervalve.com/Upload/products/backwater-valves/Fullport-Backwater-Valve-Brochure-English.pdf or backwatervalve.com/Upload/products/backwater-valves/Fullport-Backwater-Valve-Brochure-English.pdf. Everything sounds good, except, a permit? Who owns that property? The town, the city or the State? Why in hell should the alleged owner have to get permission? To hell with that...
@tylerhayeswhite
@tylerhayeswhite 4 жыл бұрын
The permit constitutes an inspection. The inspection ensures it was installed to code. Handy Andy's and homeowners who think they "I KaN PlUmMeR" can install improperly. You can pull a homeowners permit and do it yourself if you own the property but to ensure code it needs to be inspected. I'm a plumber and love having my work inspected because it shows the owner I know what I'm doing and they made the right choice to contract me instead of the Craigslist special. I can't tell you how many times "plumbing savvy" owners thought they knew what they were doing and now they're infested with rats because you can't cap an abandoned waste arm with expansion foam. Think of it like this, you're paying a small amount extra to ensure the work was done correctly. It's about $60 to pull a permit here in Pinellas county florida. That $60 gives you the piece of mind knowing the work is completed correctly and you won't have any issues in the future. All they're checking is that it's ran with proper fall and joints are primed and glued for sewer lines and there's a drip leg for gas appliances and pex lines are 18" from heater nipples. Literally making sure whatever work was done is safe. Like car seat inspectors at the hospital before you bring your newborn home or ansil inspectors for fire systems at commercial kitchens. The only people who complain about inspectors are people who dont trust what they're doing is up to code. The cost of a permit is always billed to the property owner anyways if you're the contracted plumber and if your pulling a homeowners permit it's the same rate. Always make sure the sewer has 1/8"-1/4" fall, pex lines are 18" from heater nipples, studs have nail plates if a water line goes through it, water lines are strapped, gas cocks for gas lines and ball valves for water lines, drip legs for every gas appliance, expansion tanks on water heaters for closed systems etc. Just follow code and there will be no issue with the inspection.

Been "on the list" for the program for a year. Application lost. On the list again after second massive sewage flood in one year. So the city like to pretend, but actually doing is a whole other topic. Also, they are cheap. There are good and bad backwater valves. Should be subsidizing good ones to avoid floods not cheap ones that are sure to fail. As did all the backwater valves Aug 29 2017 in Riverside. Not a single person I know with said valve did NOT flood. They all DID.

Is not hard to read the codes and learn what's permitted and then call the inspector .. nope , gotta pay some grans $$$ for the plumber... ther are poisonous flowers, You don t need permit to be a gardener or to put oil in your car . At the end they sell pipes and plumbing equipment at the store free for public .. why it s a requirment to have aprofetional plumber instead trying yourself and calling inspection later (Just like for roof) it s " interestingly" annoying .

The application shown in this video is for clean-out purposes only and will not be receiving waste, so there is no potential of clogging. Also, the installation method meets the intent of the code and makes it easier to access for cleaning.
