Been a fan for life. Had the pleasure of opening for h.r. with dubb agents in Poughkeepsie December 2015. A very humble man that was actually interested in all the supporting acts and the meanings behind their songs. I had lost one of my best friends two days before the show and had considered not playing at all. H.r. shared some wisdom and a good cry with me and helped me grieve and express my grief too.

What is so great about the internet is you can discover new artists and old artists you missed over the years. I've been a huge Beastie Boys fan since I first heard Licensed to Ill in the mid 1980's, and heard the Beastie Boys mention Bad Brains before (Michael Diamond and Adam Yauch met at a Bad Brains concert in late 1980. ), but I never looked them up until today....so here I am listening to Bad Brains for the first time! Sorry I am so late to the party! Great tune. Time for me to check out the rest!

Did you ever question any of the things they taught you while you were at school And did you ever question oh my teacher why do you take me for a fool? Rise up, you got to rise Rise up, wake up and rise When you're all alone you'll search for love but they'll have none this is the seed that they have sewn don't be afraid a better place has yet to come and when they won't teach or reach or feed you and all they do is leave you deceive you be true to yourself and save your mind lesson for the young so now let's fly away into the light of a brand new sun the time has come Rise up, you got to rise Rise up, wake up and rise We'll meditate communicate, escalate don't be late, we just can't wait to liberate this human race Go! Rise up, you got to rise Rise up, wake up and rise Don't let them don't let them take away your culture Don't let them Don't let them take away your future Rise up, you got to rise

Every die hard Bad Brains fan dislikes this because H.R. is NOT the singer, Israel Joseph I is. Israel Joseph I kills the lead vocals here completely. After I heard this I was like H.R. Who? Blasphemy maybe but Israel just kills it here. What a beast on lead vocals. And Mackie Jayson, former Cro-Mags drummer beats the snot out if his drums but never loses the beat once in the process either. A coiled viper beast. And I remember everyone kept saying the Grunge movement heralded the end of the guitar solo, and yet, Dr. Know just shredded the fuck out of a rather dangerous guitar solo on this track, speaking of beasts. Blasphemy to the purists, maybe, but those of us who love music and love Bad Brains music love the fuck out of Rise. This song was the biggest reason for that. Even 25 years after its release in 1993, it still sounds like a monster in 2018. This track never gets old. Ever. Not for me anyway.

Nice response... this song straight jams! No one can be who they aren't. Fans shouldn't compare or expect any artist to stand still, not move on, or evolve as artists. No artist is obligated to anyone but their art. Bad brains had to move forward. We are fortunate they choose to keep on keeping on. I love HR.... since I saw him solo in 1986. Saw orginal bad brains 1988. Later bad brains with Mackie ( brilliant) with the old lead singer of faith no more. Your comments inspired me express gratitude and blessings for the bad brains generosity of spirit. Don't lose sight of the mission statement PMA! Bad brains thanks for confronting bias, risking for the fight against the oppressors, and spiritual gangsterism wisdom of God! Haters, non believers, or those who think artists work for you.... it's not about you. Never was and never will be. Your delusions are the least of concerns for artists... it's your work.

They probably saw they didn't have one and figured they'd make one for them......without asking Guy in a suit #1: "say, Chuck, I noticed our ad sales are a little low this quarter" Guy in a suit #2: "indubitably, Stan-my-man. We need to add some musical diversity to this shitty channel no one likes because we inundate our subscribers with crap. Not adds though. As you know, I suck myself dry every night watching old cigarette commercials but this latest beats by Dre spot, oof, guaranteed self fisting. Guy in a suit #1: "................how 'bout some blacks...." Guy in a suit #2: "nahhhh. We have a whole genre of music for that already." Guy in a suit #1: "You didn't let me finish, Chuckarino. I WAS gonna say how 'bout some blacks......who play guitars" Guy in a suit #2: "they do that?!?" Guy in a suit #1: "if they can't I'm sure we could make em" Guy in a suit #3: "What about these guys? *Holds up Banned in D.C. Guy in a suit #1: "Fucking genius. Dread locks. Guitars. Screaming. This Tide ad will sell itself! How many under-aged Malaysian prostitutes can I fit in your hotel room tonight, Johnson. Guy in a suit #3: "12 at least!" Guy in a suit #2: "Cocaine and anal bleaching's on me today, guys!" All in unison: "Hail Satan!!!!!!!" Fìn

I agree, but you try convincing Dead Kennedy fans that the Dead Kennedy's are anything but a cover band without Jello Biafra. I can kind of see what they're driving at; Jello Biafra, like HR was a unique individual. But if these bands simply changed their names I'm sure they would be well regarded. I think this comes out of an inflated sense of brand loyalty. HR became incapable of performing. Does that mean Bad Brains should stop dead in it's tracks?

It's amusing to read comments about liking new band lineups from people who weren't even born yet to see the original bands live or the scene that inspired that bands to form. Henry Rollins moved on...and Keith Morris is doin OFF!...they are curren.. him along with most of the original members only do Flag as a part time deal... and they are much better than the full time touring Black Flag... Jello...he moved on as well...and is a legend for more than Dead Kennedys...HR retired...Bad Brains, like Dead Kennedys...is simply a shell of what they once were. If you saw these band in the early to mi eighties and saw them now you would have perspective on this topic.

That may be true, but HR went bad shit insane a long time ago. This was the next best option. IMO, they should have changed the name of the band for this period, but hey. Marketing and brand name and bla bla bla. Having said that, this is a pretty damn good song.

I have never before listened to Bad Brains. (An album cover caught my eye.) After picking this song out of the results and playing it for 4 seconds, I have all the info I need. Great riff, great groove, great tone... sold!

Have you checked out their other stuff yet? Their most well known music is more punk sounding with a different singer (HR). Check out ROIR Sessions, Rock for Light, I Against I, The Youth Are Getting Restless (a live album, which is how I got introduced to them).
