I always thought Robert Palmer sounded exactly like Bob Seeger. Like EXACTclone: voice, arrangements, production, style, members of the band, etc. Mind, this is a good thing. Seeger cranked out a long string of great rock n roll hits. But if you didn't know better, there's no way you could know from the radio. Is that just another way of saying what Alex said? Seeger was doing the same thing over 10 years earlier. It's a good cheeseburger.

Robert Palmer was a cool but powerful vocalist who usually worked well with a bigger band especially if horns are included .Check him out on the late night shows with the fantastic backing musicians in the bands of David Letterman or Jimmy Fallon

I was a young kid visiting my grandparents in Murray, KY. My cool, older cousin let me go with him into town to the record store. I saw the pic of this cool dude. It was the sheet music for this song. My cousin bought it for me. When I started playing guitar this was the first song I learned. I had never heard the song before. As it turned out, Robert Palmer was great. Check out his later work. You'll love the Addicted to Love and Simply Irresistible videos.

Timing is everything in life. When this song hit the air in 79 it sounded unique compared to the majority of radio tunes. Essentially a throw back to the late 60's early 70's.

Palmer went though a transition. After his 70s stuff he collaborated with Duran Duran to form The Power Station. The debut album is phenomenal. You definitely need to hear their cover of Bang A Gong. Palmer then did some rock/pop solo stuff that was pretty good, yet very 80s. I’d suggest Simply Irresistible from his solo days. Both Power Station and solo Palmer are must reactions. Dude was suave. Always wore a suit. Check his live stuff too -post 70s.

Listen not every band wanted to be Yes or Led Zeppelin nor could be but Robert Palmer had his moments in the sun and shouldn't be ignored. I didn't mean to turn you on, Simply Irresistible and Addicted to love at the minimum.

I saw Robert Palmer live in the 80's and he was a master performer on stage. Love to see more.

I understand your take on this simplistic sound with humble lyrics. This work of art being generic WAS why he stood out from the rest in that decade. Because of his videos, some of the younger generation were dressing like him. Kids/ Teenagers were fascinated with all of his "supermodel looking" back-up singers. No one had done that. It was innovative. He was (died in 2003), more or less, one of the masters of smooth Rock/ R&B melodies, emotion based themes, and powerful vocals. Robert's music was about how many ordinary people relate to each other. Such a passionate musician and was all about having a smooth style. One of the finest dressers in the Rock and R&B community, always taking pride in his appearance with class. Music videos for his songs were the place he shone the most. They were iconic , almost like short live performances and/or movies.

For me he was one of the best and you would need to hear more of his songs over the years to really appreciate his talant. He also knew how to play to the music video scene back then watch 'Addicted to Love' or ' Simply irresistable' which arejust fun songs and video, also some from his time playing in the band 'Power Station' he was really good and such a sad loss!

There are two versions of this song. This one, and one from 5? years later where he kicked the tempo up a notch and added some more guitar. The later version has everything that Alex is looking for. Check it out!

Alex, you referred to the "cool stuff" that was happening in music around '79. There's one artist you haven't heard yet who was doing exceptionally cool stuff during that time: Nick Lowe. For a proper intro to Lowe, check out "I Love the Sound of Breaking Glass" and "Cruel to Be Kind."

At that time Robert Palmer was considered more of a pop star and a studio band. I'm not surprised you picked up on the packaging. But he was always fun and got plenty of radio play. He was a good-looking guy with a great voice and didn't do badly with MTV, especially with Addicted to Love and Simply Irresistible.

I have loved Robert Palmer ever since I bought “Sneaking Sally Through The Alley” in the 70s. Great voice, incredibly talented, very sharp dresser and not bad to look at either. 😉 His “Johnny and Mary” is one of my all-time favorite songs. It’s got an infectious quality to it that has stayed on my mind for over 40 years. Absolutely love it.

I like that you're playing the original version. The remastered version pushed the drums way to far up in the mix. "Every Kind of People," "Simply Irresistible," "Addicted to Love," are good follow-ups as well as songs from his stint in The Power Station; "Some Like it Hot," "Get It On (Bang a Gong)," "Harvest for the World," and "Murderess." The Power Station was originally Robert Palmer - Vocals, Tony Thompson - drums, and Duran Duran members John Taylor - Bass and Andy Taylor - Guitar. It's an awesome combination - especially Tony Thompson! His drum sound is incredible.
