Matthew prepares the take out engine and transmission for installation in Project Bad Decision, the 88 Mustang Hatchback. This video includes a discussion of the various steps to ready a used drivetrain for installation in a project car like this, a discussion of what this used engine actually is, what could go wrong, together with a timelapse of the prep work. This video takes the project right up to the point of engine installation, but the actual installation is left for a future installment.

Great video....I enjoy watching someone approach it like the average DIY/hobbyist. Most videos are someone throwing lots of money in a project.

I have longer term plans for this car but I thought it would be good to try to give guys a feeling for what a resurrection like this really looks like before we get into the more exciting bigger money stuff.

I bought my motor out of a van f250 was a flat tappet cam,changed it over to a roller cam used crank, pistons, an heads off of a buddy’s engine, put new bearings and rings, took block to machine shop had everything check put together runs great,

A rebuild would be the way to be sure this unit is OK. I actually have all the parts of another engine but with good heads and a good intake that came in with this project car which I could do that to, and I might yet, though I did buy a Godzilla for it as it's ultimate power plant.

Kind of reminds me of when I put a donor engine in my Factory Five roadster!

Yeah, it’s a lot like that, though in most factory five donor projects I have dealt with, the engine had been seen running prior to installation. This deal is a real blind best guess type of project!

I agree if the injectors play nice I bet it fires right up. You should be able to get it in with the accessory ok. I would be more worried about the yoke in the transmission. Might make you have to lift it higher / more angle. Once you get the shifter in the trans tunnel it's smooth sailing. Dropping it all in at one time is my preferred method. Lifted all the way up. Grab a hold of the tail shaft and lift it over the core support while pushing the engine in, having an extra set of hands really helps.
