I have been brushing Winston’s teeth twice a day since he was a puppy. Like you I used that toothpaste and similar toothbrush. Then when Winston was 8, he’s almost 14 now, he got diabetes. Unfortunately I kept using this toothpaste which contains sorbitol as the first ingredient. The sorbitol in the toothpaste unfortunately increased the speed at which Winston formed diabetic cataracts. The sorbitol goes directly to their eyes. We had Winston’s cataracts removed 6 months after his diabetes diagnosis. So we don’t use any toothpaste with sorbitol but rather we use Tropiclean gel which is free of sorbitol and all natural ingredients. Also when.Winston had his cataracts removed during the procedure he almost died. So now he can’t ever be put under anesthesia to have his teeth cleaned so it’s more Important than ever to brush his teeth. Also we put Tropiclean water additive in his water. Tropiclean is recommended by the veterinary dental association. Just some alternative if there’s doggies out there who have diabetes or can’t tolerate sorbitol. Also now I just use a soft human toothbrush.

Thanks so much for sharing, I shared this on Instagram stories just now. It's very useful to know. I didn't know about Tropiclean, @ivonne also mentioned it in a comment above. I like that it's natural and I see that I can find it here too, so I will try it for Sami 🙂 I read about sorbitol after you explained it to me and saw that it's a sweetener that is in small quantities in toothpaste and it should be safe for dogs (they say nothing about diabetic dogs), but considering I give this to him every day, I do prefer using something natural. Or at least alternate between them and reduce the quantity of sorbitol he ingests. Thanks so much! 🥰

I absolutely love little Sami. If you have trouble getting all of the toothpaste out of the tube use a can that you buy at the grocery store-can of beans, soup etc- and lay the tube on a hard serface. Then roll the can over the tube of toothpaste from the bottom towards the opening. Good luck.

August gets his teeth brushed every single night. I have similar technique but I also use the round brush by Arm & Hammer Fresh Spectrum 360 for his back molars. I sit him on top of the toilet and from there, I do his teeth and hair brushing as well. To get the round toothbrush to the back molars I gently open his mouth and place my index finger from side to side -back of his canine teeth, to keep mouth semi open. Thanks for the video! Really enjoy your videos. I think Sami and August are about same age. Your way of handling him is truly inspiring. Thank you! Marina

Duncan does not mind having his teeth brushed. I only do it once a week, but maybe, after your video, I'll begin doing it more. I have the same toothbrush you show in your video, but I use Arm & Hammer toothpaste. In the beginning, he preferred to just lick it, but he has gotten better over the months (I use the smaller side of the toothbrush and my finger). We had a Chihuahua who lost 26 teeth in one dental cleaning with the vet because we didn't brush his teeth; so we know it is important. This is a great video! As always, thank you for sharing. 😃

That’s amazing! Good boy Sami! My westies wouldn’t let me brush their teeth so I had to spend the money to have the vet clean clean them regularly. My own fault, in addition to very costly dental health. You are a great Mommie to Sami😘

I wonder if you could still get them used to it? Maybe try it with just the paste, or try using the silicone finger brush for just 2 seconds, then maybe they slowly get used to it and let you brush their teeth? Or you can try getting them a chewing toothbrush, it's like a toy with silicone bristles, you put paste on it and they just chew it on their own. It's an idea 🙂 I know dental health can be extremely expensive 🙈

Thanks for this! I always used the wth teeth treats for sugar. For my corgi I got one of those finger brushes. But I will give this a try! Sami was so good!! Hugs and kisses Sami!! 🐾❤️

You are doing great, Ivonne! I guess it doesn't need to be daily, you could try 2-3 times a week, but simply the fact that you brush their teeth weekly is amazing ❤👏

We are using special seaweed for teeths with meal one time in a day. Never used toothbrush at all.

Thank you! I’m using Orozyme too. But as my westie is only 6 months, we use a slightly different silicone brush that has cleaning pointy thingys all over it. Chewing stuff is another big question. I know that there is a lot of dangerous chewing products. Didn’t notice that Orozyme sell those too before you mentioned them, but they are pretty expensive in my country (( still looking for cheaper alternatives. BTW following the previous video, I got my ramp delivered today and it works great. Doesn’t slip because of the rubber surface and wooden rakes and he started using it right away. Today my dog was really happy that he was finally allowed up to bed 😊

I know that silicone brush, it's great but I can't find it here 🙂 The strips here cost around $14 and they last a looong time (I only give Sami half or even less every few days). Maybe you can find other dental strips that are made more locally (I only buy these because they are the only ones available here). I am so happy that the little guy enjoys the ramp! ❤ Let me know if you have any questions for your puppy, or anything you would like to see in future videos! 😃

In the USA they clean the teeth without anesthesia. They rap the dog like the babies for them not to move and clean the teeth. The price is like around $300 but I prefer it. My next baby dog will have a more experienced Mom. Because of COVID I couldn’t travel there to have her teeth 🦷 clean 😢

I wish we had learned this, we have had roughly a dozen wearies over the past 36 yrs. Unfortunately one of our two girls suffers from dental issues, none of the others ever had an issue, Sophie is 12 and started having teeth removed at 9. It’s a lot more difficult to brush there teeth when this old. Please do a video on how to.🇨🇦

Hi Shane, I'm sorry to hear that! I don't have experience with how to brush teeth when the dog is older and doesn't allow it, but I would try giving her a dental toy to chew on (add dog toothpaste on it first). This would be the easiest thing and, of she likes the taste, she will brush her own teeth every day this way 😃 Let me know if you try it and how it's going! 💛

I use human toothbrushes that are made for babies. They're much smaller and have softer bristles. The other brushes are way too big and way too harsh. Btw...that baby boy is BEYOND adorable. 😍

Thank you for the video. I'd love to see how you get started with a puppy. Right now Archie, 8 weeks old, is way to wild to even think about it, not to mention his teeth are like deadly nails. :) I do plan on starting slow and hopefully he will be cool, calm and collected like your Sami.

Oh I remember those sharp little teeth, once Sami bit a tiny hole through my nail (by accident) 🙈😅 It's the perfect age to start, even if it seems pointless because they barely have any teeth to brush, but it's about building the habit for them to be handled and let you touch inside their mouth. You can try it when he is sleepy, see if he lets you. When they are active, it can be difficult, you can't expect him to be calm at 8 weeks 😅 But the important thing is to start slow, just get him used to the brush (the silicone finger would be ideal) at first. Then get it inside his mouth (the sensation can be uncomfortable so it's important to reward him so he knows it's normal). Let him chew on it, praise him, only do 10-15 seconds at first, then gradually increase the time of brushing ☺ I started this when Sami was 3 months, but it took time until he let me actually brush his teeth properly. With time Archie will be the same 🥰

I have a 12 year old Westie and a 9 week old Westie pup. I've had dogs all my life (I'm 65) and we never brushed their teeth or had expensive dental cleanings. Obviously something has changed because nowadays if you're negligent about brushing teeth your dog & you pay a price. My senior, Bentley, has had several $1,000 dental cleaning and several teeth pulled even though I've given him greenies & Dentastix daily forever. I'm determined to do better with my new pup and I found your video very helpful. Shelby is a wild thing right now. I get like 5 minutes of sweetness and then the wild biting machine kicks in. Look forward to her settling down a little. 🙏🏻

@@barbaradurel9846 We had Westie for 16 years and never brushed his teeth after a few months. I got lazy. We were lucky in that he never had any problems with his teeth until he was about 15. I plan on start our Archie soon. Think I need a steel glove to work with him. My hands look like pin cushions. :)

That is so exciting!! 😍I am happy for you! It was around 3-4 months, right after I got him, that I started brushing his teeth. It was mainly to get him used to the idea of having a soft brush in his mouth and the movements, because his teeth were like little needles 😂 I was probably doing this every few days, to get him used to being handled 🙂 I think this is important, not just with teeth, also get her used to being touched on the paws, belly etc. It will pay off when she needs grooming or has medical issues. Enjoy your new puppy when she comes! And if you have any questions I can help with, let me know! 🥰

@@WestieVibes Thank you so much for your response. I am very excited now. Pretty soon. My husband said the same thing about touching her face, paws and belly to get her use to it. I will be her groomer. I did this with our Lilly because she hated the crates that they put her in until they could work on her. So that was why I started to do my own grooming, also to save on $$$$$.

Training 😃 Since he was a puppy we went to training classes and worked everyday at home too. So he is quite patient. You can start with very small steps, at first just let him lick the toothbrush, or use a finger brush if it's easier. And with time and doing this everyday, he will get used to it 😍
