I had terriers all my life but none of them could compare to my Westie Tara. Adorable. STUBBORN. Loveable. Sweet. Everything you said is true! My vet used to scold me for changing her food often but she just got bored with the food and literally pushed her bowl down the stairs to show us that she’s not eating this again. She also watched TV and lunged at whatever animal was on the screen. I miss her. RIP my sweet constant companion.

I have had a total of 6 Westies in my life, and I loved each and every one of them! I am too elderly now for one, but I have had wonderful memories over the years with each one of them! Love and appreciate their uniqueness.

Maybe the hardest thing of having a Westy is SAYING GOODBYE to HIM OR SHE, my dear Shana (13 YO) died three months ago and saying goodbye to her broke me. The Westy really are magical beigns and having one really changes your life, this video brings tears to my eyes again.

Our first westie passed away 2016. He was the most unique dog we ever had/encountered. Gentle, devoted, eager to please, luv to make us laugh with funny antics, he luvd toys that sang or talked, would line them all up side by side & go down the line making each one perform for him. He luvd fetching & kitty cats, our cat had 6 kittens & they climbed & rolled all over him while he revelled in them. He was a champion rat killer, liked the beach, little babies who's wee feet fascinated him, he had a grudge against german shepards but favored doxies, chihuahuas & pigs, we think because they were confident like him. He always sat on the deck in the dark at night alone listening to the night sounds before bedtime. Shortbread cookies & tea his fav treat, a true scottish angel dog. When we were ill, he never left our side and we never left his when he was diagnosed with canine pulmonary cystic fibrosis. It shattered us. Ended in hospital almost having heart failure when he passed, we were inconsoluble. He came into our lives like he was sent from heaven at a time of great distress for us & gave us joy, laughter, love that erased all the difficulty. 7 yrs & we still weep at the very thought of him. We'll never stop missing him. We have 2 westies now,6 & 7yrs, and tho different personalities, they are our very joy and we would die for them, thats how much we love them. Westies have a rare personality, almost human. Like Potato chips, you cant just have one, we want a houseful but our age slows us down. We pray they'll live out the rest of their lives by our side so they can be buried along with us, God willing. Westie=Love & Joy!!!💝💘💕

So many things are true in this video. My favorite is coming home to my Westie. She is springing and so happy to see me. I hate leaving her every morning. The other big one is when i walk her, I call it her time. She can stop and sniff as much as she likes because when i walk her, i want her to be able to spend the time enjoying getting out of our small house. If she wants to spend time reading Pee mail and leaving her own message, thats her choice. I love taking her to the river and she loves swimming and digging holes in the sand next to the river. This little one has brought me so much happiness, I want her to have a great dog's life.

This is all so true. My little man used to "knock" on the bathroom door if anyone took too long! We were lucky we didn't have too many allergies. He passed away a few years ago. I really miss him so much. He was small with a huge personality that filled our life with joy.

My westie loved boxes and travel bags.. She knew the word GIT, hated baths and would howl to certain songs.. She passed a few years ago.. I miss her everyday..

Westies ( and Cairn Terriers btw) have this typical smile when they express their joy when you come back home!! Just love this o much!

My Westie either waits beside the bathroom door or pushes his way into the room. I love this breed. My Westie, Charlie, is my first encounter with the breed. He is so intelligent and has a big personality.

I recognise many of these traits in my Westie Hamish who is now 17. We found he was allergic to beef but apart from that hasn’t had any allergy issues. But he is so stubborn with an amazing personality and great with children and other dogs. We have a cat who loves Hamish and comes walking with him!! I believe the record lifespan for a Westie is 24 and Hamish seems set on beating the record !!

Our second Westie died last week. We think he was about 14; he lived with us for eight years. We’re heartbroken. But seriously reconsidering bringing another into our lives-only because of the chronic skin allergies. But seeing this not only bring tears-but also a deep longing to have another Westie in our lives.

I had Westies growing up and my husband and I have had two so far. Our latest lived to be 16. I loved her so much and miss her hugely. We’re now looking for another. They are just terrific to have around the house!!

Because I work full time, and my mom who’s in her early 80’s also wanted a Westie( we had one as a family member) for 17+ years when I was growing up! We decided to share her, we think she ( and we) have the best of both worlds, I have her Friday afternoon till Monday morning and a couple afternoons during the week! My Mom has her week days and they both gets lots of walks and also socializes with other dogs and their owners! We love this arrangement and of course when our Westie is at the others home we get lots of texts and cute photos, but each of us can visit or see her anytime we like! Win, win for our Westie and for us! I would recommend this if possible to anyone who works full time or likes to travel etc., she has adapted to this routine very well ! She has enriched my Mothers life and ours so much! We could not imagine our lives without our Westie! 🥰

I can confirm that Westies absolutely love when you come home to them. I don't currently own a Westie (though let's be honest, the Westie owns the humans, at least if you ask the Westie), but my mother has one and he just goes crazy with jumping up and trying to kiss me whenever I come to visit. He's the happiest dog I've ever met and such a joy to dogsit.

We borrow our friends westie and this sums up Bella exactly!!! She's so sassy, if I leave the flat for 2 minutes to take the bin out she gets so excited as soon as I open the door as if I've been out for a few hours. She's so intuitive and when my little girl was poorly with Chicken pox Bella didn't leave her side. She's honestly the best little dog! We're obsessed with her and so grateful we get to share her 💓

Our Westie, Gillan, is now 16 years old and we have had him since he was a puppy. Everything you talked about is true of our buddy. After the kids were mostly gone, he was our sweet, stubborn companion. My wife trained him to due tricks as a puppy and he was consistent with doing them until a few years ago, when his legs wouldn't work so well. We love him to pieces and he is now our old lap buddy.

I have a 1 year old Westie boy, and a 4 yo Scottie girl - OMG, you have not seen stubborn until you have a Scottie.

I think you pretty much covered everything speaking as a fellow Westie owner 😂 My Angus was always good about eating the same food until he got to be age 15. Then he started getting picky and we had to mix chicken broth or canned dog food with the dry kibble until eventually he only wanted the canned stuff. Miss his little westitude!!

Mine is 12 years old and still greets us with a smile everyday after work, likes to sign to us and stops every 10 meters whens she is out for a walk. Also she looks like Sami and watches the Tv all the time but if theres dogs on she runs up and trys to get at them to play.

What a doll. We've had three and they are really unique and special. I love when they lay splatted on the floor and the ears going back is adorable. I always thought the sporadic and stubborn walking pattern was unique to us but nope!

I rescued a Westie from our local shelter after his previous owner passed away....it was love at first sight and YES Angus did everything in this video....he didn't have allergies like yours but, after having the best 4 years of my life with him, he did end up having liver and gall bladder issues and I had to put him down almost a year ago.... the most painful decision I ever had to make....miss him like crazy but I have a small memorial area in my home for Angus.. Also, I have rescued another pup from the same shelter who is a Havanese Mix and Cooper has a lot of the same personality traits as my Angus had....God bless your pup and thanks for this video....

Basically spot on with everything! My Westie has seasonal allergies so not so bad and he'll eat just about anything put down to him. If he doesn't want to move on his walk I've actually had him lie down on the ground! And yes they do appear to be very inquisitive; closing a door on him will make him run to it scratching to try and open it. This is what makes them such clever little dogs. I also love how their ears go flat when they are excited to greet us. 🙂

Yes to all of these except being vocal. But i think that’s because I trained my westie, Yogi, when he was a puppy not to bark during all of his needy moments by asking him to lay down/ ignoring him. Now when he wants my dinner, he lays down in a huffy, dramatic way and it’s basically just as demanding 😂 I can’t help but love all the stubbornness and sass. It makes a westie a westie!

I can relate to all of them. My Charlie rang a bell to go outside and taught my olde English bulldogge to rind the bell too. And he has a different bark for different things he wants. He was so lovely. We miss him.

All facts for sure about westies! My westie is 16 mths old. His name is "Deacon Westie"🥰. And yep... He has a first & last name🤣. AkA "Deeky", he is everything you mentioned and more! He pushes doors open, follows you everywhere bcz he can't miss anything and sniffs every inch of the house as if it's new territory on a daily basis. Westies are the best!!!

When he knows I’m going out, he sits next to my car and waits until I open the door, then he tries to get in! I have a Westie Mix that just fell into our laps 8 years ago. He's not verbal though that super adorable. While picky with treats he's always eaten his standard food. One thing not meantioned probably haven't experienced, amazing with kids. So blessed to have a patient, gentle dog that genuinely loved to be in the middle of the chaos. Even when I was scared he'd get hurt he'd cry if I separated them from him.

Oh my goodness! I loved watching Sammy! He is so beautiful and acts just like me nine year old Westie, Winston. Westies are just the best. Winston brings us so much joy and is just the best little friend.

Our last Westie knew down to the minute when her mealtime was. If I wasn't quick enough, Ava would stare at me and then her dog dish, then back to me! Then the tap on my leg! I can identify with everything you have in this video. My male westie is also a Sammi (actually, he is Samuel). We are his new family, as the family had too many dogs. His original name was Cyrano. Sammy was as close as we could find without confusing him with a new name. Fun, fun,fun!

You hit the mail on the head! My Sugar did all of these things except the sleeping on her back. She hated it and rarely if ever did it. The massages she loved. I'd scratch her neck and ears and she was in heaven. Oh and the zig zags when walking 😂😂 she loved to see if she could trip me. The smiles when I'd come home was priceless. Oh how I wish it was the same with Luna, but that excitement of Sugar when I came home was special 😭🐾❤️

Fellow Westie owner, and most of your list are things we can relate with. Especially the stubbornness and following us from room to room to make sure he isn't missing out on anything. The one thing weird about our guy is he never sleeps with his belly exposed on his back. It might be due to him having a more anxious personality. He has always despised belly rubs or being flipped onto his back. So we compromise and just pet him on his side. Sami looks so chill with his limp paws while sleeping on his back ☺

Our Westie suffered from skin allergies until we put him on Apoquel. I am not pushing for drug treatment but it made an amazing change in his life as well as ours. I used to have to get up in the middle of the night sometimes to bath him and soothe his itching. Once we started him on Apoquel his skin healed and he almost never itched. He lived for 15 1/2 years and when he did pass it had nothing to do with the drug. Just my personal opinion based on having a Westie with bad skin allergies.

If you want to learn patient... get Westie. Most probably he will be more stubborn than you are and you will not have any other choice, but to to be more patient 😂 Oh and btw my westie loves sleep on my pillows.

Sami is so cute and has the same qualities as our 12 year old Zuzu. She rules the house including her “sister” Bella, our 70 lb old English bulldog. She too has allergies which we manage with 2 shots of cytopoint during the spring and summer. Very smart, very stubborn and full of sass. ❤️

Lots of this is so true, especially wanting to be involved in EVERYTHING! The one thing i dont have is picky eater. He loves the same food since he's been grown. I changed it once for a cheaper but more organic version. He hated it and barely ate till i changed back. The welcome home every day is also brilliant

I adopted a Westie mix from a local shelter. Skye is so similar in herding me, nipping at my heels, begging for people food. Quite vocal, she & my Havanese on guard duty in our Victorian parlor. Also loves to stand on her back legs when being walked. Very curious about other people & animals.

That bit with the paw, that is just what my Bobby does :) This video is so true, on all points! :) My morning walkies with Bobby (12 month old Westie boy) go like this.. 'walk... stop.. sniff... more sniffs, then backtrack a bit for more sniffs, then... SPRINT about 10-15meters then STOP and sniff :) He is so curious about everything, it's adorable :)

Great video! Anyone who is thinking of adding a Westie to your pack please educate yourself first. They are amazing dogs but don’t let their smaller size fool you - they are a lot of work and are not “lap dogs”. Very independent, stubborn, and fully of energy! And like Sami, they are extremely prone to food and skin allergies. But, once you have a Westie you’ll never want another breed. Thank you for the video and sharing Sami with the world. ❤

I experienced all this craziness with my Mac. He passed away March 16, 2021, and his passing destroyed me. Mac and I were soulmates. We were from the moment we met. I have a Cairn now, named Gogo, and she has been a real comfort to me. Gogo looks just like Toto from the Wizard of Oz. She actually does a lot of the stuff Mac did, because Westies and Cairns are very closely related. I don't bother with dog beds, because Gogo demands to sleep in my bed. She also knows where I hurt, and will curl up to that spot and share her body heat. She is such a good girl. Mac was a wonderful boy, and I loved him so very much. I still grieve for him, snd always will.

Our Westie is exactly like this! I gave up not letting her in the bathroom with me because she would scratch the doors until I opened it. She won that one! 🤣

I've had 4 Westies so far. They are the BEST companion dog. When I have to go somewhere and can't take him, I say I've got to go and you have to stay. Jamie turns around and goes out his doggie door to the backyard. We had a breeding pair at one time (Angus and Gretchen). When the pups were old enough to be outside we made a moveable pen. We were one block from a grade school and the kids loved seeing the pups. Sometimes we would let them come and pet the puppies. The one thing I always made sure I told the new owners is that Westies are super super smart. And not let them do anything you don't want them to do the rest of their life. Also make it a game of them coming to you when you call them. Shower them with treats, hugs and love will teach them to come. A trick I learned walking Angus and Gretchen was as we walked whenever they would start to veer to the side I would give a gentle tug and say 'walk'. They learned very quickly to just keep walk. When we would reach a spot I would let them sniff around. So my dogs were very good walkers. When Angus was a pup I took him to a puppy class with all these labs and other big dogs. We had to walk them around and around. The other dogs took awhile but did get the hang of it in time. Angus caught on right away and got tired of going around and around. So the next thing I knew I was pulling him around cause he just laid down. He was done with that part of the class.

Thank you thank you for this wonderful video. Our Westie Freya is 2.5 years now and I am completely besotted by her! She does many of the things you described just like Sami. One thing as a female she does is carry her small plush toys in her mouth, like she is carrying her puppies......we find them all over the house! She loves to sleep with "Lamb chop" or her grunting hedgehog. She also will jump up on the back of the sofa while I am reclining and take a nap on top of my head! Oh there is nothing like a Westie! I had to teach my husband that a walk is like our Westies ‘social media’ hour. Sassafras has to smell who’s been there, what did they eat, etc… coming home is the best! BUT, you forgot… Westies don’t like to snuggle. Males MIGHT snuggle but, they think they are big dogs in a small dog body. I loved my two Westies very much. They’ve both passed, so now I have a Standard Poodle and she is a Velcro dog. Snugglicious!

My Boy loved his walks. When I had him I actually weight less lol. He would pee at least 10 times a walk and he never missed his favorite spots. We do at least 3 30 minute walks a day. He definitely did the Westie stare and that paw tap. Sometimes more, if he woke before me and wanted food or potty and I was still sleeping he would stand on me and then either sit on my face literally or he give me a paw punch in the face. He loved to cuddle, never knew a dog could be so cuddly. I sure do miss him had 8 great years, got him at age 7. He did have sink allergies and ear infections, but I attribute that to the lawn car in my community other dogs had issues too. The only food he seemed to never be board with was something I cooked. His skin allergies also seemed to improve when ibcooked for him. Any dog I have in the future I will cook for. Great videos!

You forgot "recall". You can teach a Westie to do most dog tricks/commands--except recall. A Westie doesn't come when called unless he feels like it. He will look at you, like: I know what you want, but I don't want to do that. Hence: the fake answering of the door. I ring my own doorbell and then he comes running.

My client has a westy/havanese mix looks mostly westy 1) the staring 2) treats 3) stubborn walking 4)barking 5) following 6) sleeping in weird spots 7) tricking 8) the massage in morning 9) rubbing body on plants Basically everything 🥰🥰🥰

My Norwich Terrier looks and acts the same. I laughed when you said the dog will just sit down and refuse to walk. When mine does that, I call her a boat anchor.

A beeping and vibrating collar works great. The dog collar does NOT shock the dog, it vibrates like a phone. Ramsay actually comes when you call his name, and he doesn't run out the door now! Very intelligent and sweet dogs but they sure are stubborn😂

It totally is! I lost my Westie this morning. Hyper (his name) had gone back to my bed, under the covers. He always talks to me, is picky about food but has never had a skin condition and is now 10 years old. Having a Westie as a friend means a lifetime of joie de vivre

Yes! Bethy would sit and stare at me when she wanted out too! And if I didn’t pay attention she would put her paw on me and press down. She was very strong so I felt it.
