Literally just dealt with this. It's been a recurring issue for me for years now. (I'm 21f and a runner) Flares up and lasts for days to weeks at a time making it nearly impossible for me to walk without excruciating pain let alone run. Physical therapy definitely helped mine heal quick this time and I hope your pain goes away soon 😔

I also have piriformis syndrome and have done that sitting stretch every day of my life for over 10 years because I never want to have sciatica again. Sorry to hear you’re struggling! Unfortunately rest & gentle activity is probably the only solution 😢

I think the worst pain that I had was sciatica pain, so I completely understand your pain. I would recommend kinesio tape and stretch in the morning and evening as well as before and after your exercises. This all really helped me.

I hate needles but love getting dry needling done and I definitely think it helps! It’s a bit similar to acupuncture. Good luck!

Oh and doing more exercises that strenthens your core/back really helped as well to keep it in check once it healed.

I did dry needling for mine and it worked WONDERS!!!!! Also... yoga is hands down amazing!!!

I keep all my PT worksheets. I have to keep doing them, everytime I stop my back pain comes back, it's been 2 years. Just gotta add to your lifestyle

With nerve pain there's nothing you can really do to cure it per se, you just have to let it repair over time. PT, stretching, medications, other therapy might help relieve symptoms by reducing pain but the nerve damage will still probably be there and gradually heal over time. PT and stretching are probably beneficial in reducing symptoms and also improving functionality. Improving your range of motion and flexibility will help you become more limber. Right now there's probably something physically pressing down on the nerve (everybody's body is different) whenever you do certain strenuous activities. That is going to cause it to get damaged again and again unless you change your activity regimen OR do more stretching, yoga, ROM, and help your body avoid that damaging pressure of whatever is pinching on your nerve. Also, you definitely don't want continue working on nerve pain I would think, nerves have layers and the more you damage the external layers, the closer you get to the internal parts of the nerve which will cause more severe damage that is harder to recover from. The scaitic nerve extends from your lower back through your leg, right now I don't know if rolling out would do anything other then put more pressure on the nerve possibly. I guess it may loosen up your muscles which might help, but I'm not sure if that'll really do anything.

I had the same exact symptoms and my ortho thought I strained my glute. After a month of pain on and off I got an MRI... stress fracture. Be careful girl!!!

I don't know why it took me so long to see this, but I'm glad I did! I have the numb, tingling stage, and I hadn't thought about the possibility of it advancing to pain and not being able to run. I'll take it more seriously now.

As a doctor I can tell you the paresthesias is more serious than pain. Your nerves are being compressed. I would absolutely advise against running

Ugh, piriformis has been an issue for me for years. Most recently I added IT band syndrome to my problems on that side (bc I was dumb and pushed things too far. So.... same). I had to stop running completely for about 9 days. The only thing that helped was working on my glute medius, glutes, quads on the left side (since my left side is janky), oh and rolling (also with the lacrosse torture ball). ' Did they measure things for imbalance? Like is your quad, hamstring, etc, one one side larger than the other? Also stretching it out a lot makes it worse for me and my theory is that the left side is weaker and also more flexible than the right side. So stretching it just sort of makes it even looser while the right side is tighter and stronger. It just pulls the left side out of alignment even more when I run. And Prehab - heard great things, friends of mine go there and I've been debating it myself. And also too 🤣 Tokyo! Amazing! That is my last world major to complete (hopefully finishing off London in April which is #5). I've heard it's a super cool city.

I don't know if this at all relevant but I had a similar thing, they thought I had a sacral stress fracture in college and was literally on crutches one day after a workout. Then I found out that it's basically just the fact that my hips get out of alignment and it inflames my SI joint (but the pain was excruciating) . Now that I know, I regularly check that my hips are in alignment. The way I do it is to lay on my back, put my legs into a 90 degree angle (like if you are about to do a hip bridge) put a foam roller between my knees and press my knees together (usually makes a loud pop noise in my hip). And then make sure to stretch hip flexors. That basically cured me, might not be relevant but thought I'd share :)

U need to get an MRI to rule out a disc herniation or bulging disc which might be irritating the nerve. Also foam rolling will irritate the nerve and make it worse. Best way to treat it is strengthening ur back muscles. Good luck on ur recovery

Most bulging/herniated discs will heal with conservative treatment. You don’t need an MRI unless you have red flag signs of cord compression (urinary retention/bowel incontinence, saddle paraesthesia, extreme lower extremity weakness, etc).

Take care. Acupuncture might relieve some of your symptoms, though l’m not a big fan of that kind of treatments. Physiotherapy and stretching might also help. And don't buy anyone telling you to take herbs and other "natural" medicine. Many of those new age naturopaths are selling "Alternative medicine" and selling you plants or homeopathy as if regular medicine was bad science, and theirs was natural good and beneficial. Try and tell us what works for you, but don't get duped. And have a snappy recovery. At worst you can go to Tijuana have some tequila shots, that might also help for a few hours at least though you might not be able to run later on.

I did the same- get in my car without stretching- and developed plantar fasciitis last week and couldn't walk. Little time off and stretching like crazy every day, and I'm back this week, but I'm NEVER skipping stretching from here on out!

Emma, you likely have a disc issue. Sciatica is just a symptom of a problem. It’s not an actual diagnosis. You need to do cobra poses multiple times a day. Hold some of them at the top. Do maybe 20 every hour. Do no try bending forward or stretching the back side of your legs at all. That is very bad for it. It will get better! It’s very common if you sit a lot. An MRI would confirm you have this.
