Taking apart a bad hoverboard battery to discover it's a fake. Half of the cells are not connected, and some are leaking. Showing you what a good self balancing scooter battery pack looks like.

At least you got actual cells in the cheap pack, I took one apart that whilst it had the nice BMS of the second pack you showed, half the cells were just dummy cells full of sand! I rebuilt it with decent-ish cells and now it's doing good service as a compact short range e-bike battery.

Thanks! Troubleshooting ours and just sent my husband the link for the specific battery you pulled apart that was not good. Will be buying from the one you recommend. Nothing worse then wasting $$ on a poor product!

Ha! That is why my first hoverboard has no power to get over 5 mm obstacle. I blamed motors, but now I know that batteries are actually bogus. Thank you very much for this video - it explains many things. Now i have new hoverboard with 10" wheels, and it feels like batteries last forever.

What diameter heat shrink did you use after you put the pack's back together? Was it 200mm?

My brand new hoverboard run time is around 25 minutes then it cut off power of board. At full charge it was around 41.5 V and after 25 minutes the battery voltage was only 37.8 V for cut off. Why is the voltage still so high and already there was a cut off the power? At wat voltage should the board switch off? Any suggestions?

Do you think I can plug a 6S setup to the 10S BMS (by not using 4 of the balance wires) and then drawing power from the battery directly and just using the BMS for charging by pluging a 22,2V power supply to it?

PRAWON Well it mostly depends on the particular bms you want to use, but basically yes it should work without an issue, it just has to be wired in the right order... so the 1st wire in to the bms (or balance/hobby chargers port connector, is the thin (usually black,) balance wire on the pack negative , 2= 1st positive (some are white, some red) and 3= 2nd cell positive and so on (The 10 series groups are 2p in this type of batt, except obv for the 50% fake batt in the vid.)

Question. My Swagtron T1 battery has two extra small wires coming out of it connecting to my hoverboard. Most batteries don't have those. Do you know what they are for and if I need to get a better with those wires for sure, or can I just not use those wires?

You might have found the fine wires used to alert the electronics that the batteries are overheating. You'll find a tiny bulb-shaped blob at the end of the wires (thermistor) glued or taped to a battery.

Test each battery with a multimeter before taking the whole thing apart.mine has two batteries that were dead we changed just those and it was fine again

Hi. I’ve picked up a hoverboard and fixed it up, however the battery barely lasts a few minutes. This is obviously very frustrating and I was wondering if I could get some advice on it. Ive taken it apart carefully and saw the BMS and cells look just like your quality battery, but the cells do not have any labels on them. I’ve measured all 10 groups of 2 cells but all are around 4.05 volts, so very full. This really stumps me since I don’t want to purchase an expensive new battery unnecessarily. Any ideas?

A faulty battery can show proper voltage but not have current (amperage) capacity.

or you can just wire a bunch of 11.1 rc car lipo's to run in series and be ran externally,not only upping the voltage but allowing you to increase the time your able to use it.

I opened up my hoverboard and the sticker on the battery had a Samsung logo, I think that means it’s a good battery. Also thank you for making this video

so, i took mine apart and they're all the same purple samsung ones you said were good. however, i've seen reports online that those exact model number of samsung batteries had a big problem where a company started printing fake tubing for them and putting it on random fake batteries.

Well then you have a good battery pack, just make sure that you don't mash the power cables into the frame when you re-assemble it, it is is easy to damage them if not careful with wire placement when re-assembling. The company that makes these packs buys the cells separately, it is easy for battery companies to cheat but it's also easy to test, these packs put out 140-200 watt hours, if they were using the fake cells capacity would be 1/3 of that or worse, all you need is a load and a $10 dc watt counter to test.

Good video ok buy from a reputable local seller with samsung marked on the pack Good to know the balancing battery management circuit is inside too Some battery packs sold have a balancer plug NOT GOOD

Check the voltage of the batteries. Use the NiMH (or any nickel battery setting) to jump start the battery. Use 0.1 amps or as low as you can go. The nickel battery charger is a requirement here, as any other setting will give you an error alert, not detecting the dead battery. Make sure the cells do not overheat. Charge at low amps until the voltage rises to a good level, like maybe 1 or 2 volts. Then check to see how fast your battery can charge. Find the number of amp hours (go online and look it up), and use that number of amps to charge your battery until all the cells are at the minimum voltage (so around 35 volts in total) and stop charging with the nickel battery charger. Switch to a lithium-ion charger and if the voltage is high enough you should be able to charge without a problem. If the lithium charger gives you a hard time, go back to the nickel battery charger. When the voltage is high enough reinstall the battery, and it should be good. If not, then just buy a new battery. By the way, this entire process requires you to closely monitor the cells and voltage. Takes almost an entire day, so you will need a lot of free time. Do this fast, the cells get worse the longer you leave them.

Kevin Bosworth you can some times charge it with another batter use wire go from black to black and red to red. Watch the battery. I really don’t recommend it but it’s a last resort. Then after about an hour charge it normally

it will allow you to have it shipped to Canada, and we've shipped these to CA before but there is always a risk you could have a problem to be honest, Canadian customs are known to have issues. If for any reason it is returned we will refund you less the cost of incurred shipping. But generally speaking should be OK.

I have a samsung 36v 4.4 ah battery . The seller of the hoverboard sent a replacement. A jetech jt-bc204 25.2v 4ah . Is that good for a replace or not

someone help me please: i'm converting an hoverboard to a golf manual cart, to motorize it. i bought the controllers and the throttle, but cannot understand how to charge the hoverboard battery li ion pack. it has 2 wires black and red. but the connector of the charger has 3 one more for the temp. so i don't know how to charge the battery pack once i teared down the hoverboard with all its circuit board and sensor board. can i cut the whire of the charger with 3 pin connector and plug directly into the battery pack= i see that it has BMS inside so i think there is no problem. but the 3rd wire for temp is so important? thanks or i need to re-use the circuitry of the hoverboard? thanks in advance please help i'm stuck here

Measure the voltage from your charger from the two wires (black and red probably) to see if it puts out 42 volts, which is the appropriate voltage for these packs. This way you can also ensure the polarity is correct. All you need to do is connect these to the red and black of the battery, and it will charge. Your charger should work just fine without the temperature wire connected, unless it's too smart for its own good and doesn't commence charging... Anyways you'll be able to tell, either the LED on the charger will change color, or you can simply disconnect the charger after a few minutes and re-check the voltage of the battery pack to see if it went up.

@@nexmetal hi thanks for reply. The three pin are not used all infact if you look at a tear down video only 2 of 3 are connected. I dont know why. I was just wondering what the maim board does. And if connecting directly to the bms of the pack would change something. I found the schematics on gthub of this board but cannot estabilish the funcionality of having 4 cable running from power imput connector to the board...maybe the onboard charging led ? Thank you

The connector of the charger has three prongs but only uses two, one on each side of the wire, to supply power. The third hole does not do anything, at all.. it would help if you could post a pic of what you are referring to so I could look at it; you can email to info@fullbattery.com

@@Etrueyeeithe extra pin is purely to ensure it gets plugged in only one way: the correct way. Without the third pin, it would be too easy to simply plug it in backwards and seriously fuck shit up lol. They're all just 2 wires and 2 pins with an added blank third pin

Then you have a good battery pack, just make sure that you don't damage the power cables when putting the case back on, it has a sharp edge and you could nick the power wire and cause a fire someday because you're not thinking.

A circuit tester would tell you the amperage without having to look inside if you load it up. So you could take a punt on a cheap one and send it back if it was lacking. I don't believe everything I see on KZfaq.😉

Not with this BMS, the cutoff voltages are different for the traditional Lithium, LiFePO4 and LTO. Each need different a different BMS. Also at 2.4 volts per cell you would need a larger quantity of them if you wanted a 36 volt pack. Basically you're talking about a completely different battery pack. One of the reasons why these packs aren't even made with LFP's.

@@Canoneosmiami What's the reason you want to use lithium titanate? Look at it this way, the largest capacity 18650 shape LTO is only 1.5 Ah at 2.4 volts, it's pathetic compared to 3.5 Ah 3.7 volts for the NCR18650GA cells we use on our fullbattery.com battery packs. Sure, it will have a long life as far as cycle count goes, but you need 3 times as many cells for same capacity. IMO titanate is only good for much larger packs, e-bike, car, battery bank, etc. I think the down side to lower capacity (at the moment) and the low voltage, which reduces the watt hours per cell, is just too much to justify their use instead of Li-Ion or iron oxides.

It should be noted that batteries come in all quality levels. Other than having "fake" batteries installed, there are "protected" and "unprotected" packs being sold. The unprotected packs are more likely to catch fire. I've had my share of packs that I've taken apart and I am constantly amazed at how many come with the unprotected cells wrapped up. You'd never know which ones are there unless you take the shrink wrap off and looking at them. I would NEVER USE OR OWN a machine with the unprotected cells in it. The typical cheap scooters are more likely to have the cheap batteries in them. The name brand machines "tend' to have the more expensive protected cells. If in doubt and you are interested in buying a new machine, contact the brand and officially ask what cells are in it, brand and protection status. When I've had machines apart for whatever reason, I look at the packs and see what's installed. If the machine is mine or there to be looked at for someone else, I ask to take the pack wrapping off to check. Re-wrapping is not a big deal and easily done. The whole insides are securely mounted, so the wrapping is not a durability issue. When I've had packs brought to me that started to act up and only some cells were bad and they were the unprotected type, I bring them to the battery store and get rid of them. I state the case to the owner. They're too dangerous to take a chance on. If you've ever seen one catch fire and know you cannot not put it out, that makes the decision easy right there. The protected cells I tend to collect. Mostly, when problems arise, the battery(s) are bad but chargers do go out and on rare occasions, the unit itself gets a bad board. It's always a crap shoot on what went bad. Heavy people, 200 pounds and up, who ride seem to have the most problems. Lithium batteries HATE high temperatures. Moving a heavy human puts strong stress on that small battery. NOT recommended. Heavy people NEED to buy machines with double packed battery packs. For 36 volt, instead of 10 cells, get one with 20. They are double-ganged and create less stress. Be prepared to pay $$$ also. Double and triple packed batteries heat up much less, they just drain your wallet. Don't charge them while hot and try to avoid constant "hard" starts. This adds instant stress and kills battery life. Lastly, Lithium batteries are nothing to play with. They require respect in charging and especially if you decide to take a pack apart. There are rules! Follow them!

A more powerful (higher capacity) battery will not give you any more speed or power as it is not a battery issue but the motor controller (motherboard). The only exception is if you have the half-fake pack, then you will notice a power increase. Larger capacity packs will give you longer run time. It is very possible to add a second pack, but you must have a 2-piece not 3-piece motherboard (the side opposite to the battery pack should be empty). If you have a big motherboard there, then you need to swap the brains for the 2-piece brain first. And if you do do that, the two battery packs must be identical (same manufacturer, same capacity). Then you just splice the second pack into the same fat power cables as the battery on the opposite side.

At 3:00 -- mixing Lithium cells. BIG no-no. Even if they're all identical they should still be matched for best results, especially for high-current use shown here. The cells shown could likely have all been factory rejects. Know your source.

no but many factories in china cheat these made it into a great deal of hoverboards, if you have poor range compared to your friends or if it feels like it looses power then you are probably affected.

I disagree that it has anything to do with the battery manufacturer - more likely the retailer. We sell this brand as well and open packs randomly here and there to ensure they are being honest with us (and they have always been accurate). If anybody is looking for a legit battery, we sell them on our website (www.streetsaw.com) and they range from a basic cell battery up to the latest UL listed Samsung batteries.
