I was deadset on installing a Warn winch for my Jeep Rubicon 392. But, after procratinating long enough, I realized that the best winch to have is the one you have on you when you need it. And with the incredible deals on the Badland Apex 12,000 lb winch, by Harbor Freight, my curiosity was definitely sparked. After doing some research, people just love this winch and have put it through it's paces and ranked it as a very durable winch, worthy of being compared to the almighty Warn Zeon 12S, that retails for nearly three times as much! Come along on this journey of mine with a complete unboxing, install, and synthetic line tensioning of the Badland Apex 12000 pound winch on my 2021 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon 392, along with the Warn winch mounting plate that's been sitting in my garage for some time.

Loose wires are a no go. Good csll installing the swith, now you need a fused hub. Get a terminal crimper to do customed lenght on your wires. The conyrol box's ground wire, cit the excess and add a new terminal. 👍

That's an interesting observation! I was located kind of in an embankment, but was sure visible to them. Perhaps they thought, "well he has the winch, what more could I provide?" Lol! A couple weeks ago we had pulled off the side of the road in a rural farm area of Arizona. We were simply switching drivers but a gentleman in a pickup truck was kind enough to ask if we needed help. There's still some shreds of humanity left in this world if you look hard enough.

From the terrain, it looks like he's in the Austin area, so there's a good chance that those drivers were liberals... Even if they had stopped, they would have just screwed things up...

just rerouted my power cable today. Same exact winch bought a month ago and has a different setup in the control box than yours. mine was much easier to do. The bus bars in control box was all L shaped not like yours. Battery cable was right on top very easy to take off with one bolt. Thanks for the video

With the new 2024 grille I can confirm it does not touch and way more room behind the winch

if that wire ever gives you problems, just make your own with a 90 degree lug and it'll shoot straight out the new hole you drilled.

Wow, that's pretty interesting. Hopefully you got a pretty good deal on it! Seems they are constantly tweaking this winch. In another video I watched where the guy relocated the power wire, it had a hole in the back that he patched with some silicone. The way mine is, it's not a complete circle but just an opening that is not fully enclosed. So, I was not able to patch mine the way he did his. Just another update to the winch that they made since the prior years, I guess.

What do you think the total install time would be if you weren't filming?
@TheNotSoOrdinaryCarGuy
@TheNotSoOrdinaryCarGuy 3 ай бұрын
If just installing the winch and the winch plate, probably 3-4 hours tops. It took me like a day and a half, which not only included filming, but doing the relocation of the main power wire. That's really what took the longest amount of time and was a little bit exhausting. Also, getting the factory bumper to sit flush before fastening the bolts also took a little bit of time, but I soon realized that fastening them down was going to line it up and make it flush anyways. So, that time was a little bit wasted. Overall it was really not too bad, all things considered. The final product was totally worth it IMO. Oh, and routing the wiring and getting the battery disconnect switch exactly how I wanted it, took some time as well. I'm a bit of a perfectionist though, and I'll readjust something five different times until I have it just like I want it. lol!

One of the complaints that I have with the kiddie engineers that Jeep used for the JL is that they took things that worked, changed them, and then had to add more things to fix the problems that the new things introduced... Because they decided to have the stupid A-S-S (Auto-Stop-Start) system and wanted to provide for a future "mild hybrid" design, they had to go with an electro-hydraulic power steering pump. Unfortunately, that pump is not powerful enough (pressure and flow rate is too low) to be able to run a hydraulic winch. So, instead of being able to use a MileMarker hydraulic winch that has a 100% duty cycle, you get stuck using crappy electric winches that have a 5% duty cycle. I'm not picking on HF about this -- ALL the electric winch manufacturers have ridiculously low duty cycle ratings. I used my MileMarker hydraulic winch on my XJ after a hurricane to move large trees that had blown down. The pieces of the trees were so heavy that I had to chain the rear of my XJ to another tree to keep it from getting pulled towards the downed tree. Even blocking the tires with logs didn't help -- I just got pulled over the logs. That winch was pulling pretty much non-stop for the entire day. *That* experience sold me on hydraulic winches. The only advantages of electric winches is that they are easier to install and they cost less.
@TheNotSoOrdinaryCarGuy

Sounds like hydraulic winch is the way to go. Especially if you’re going to be using it on a regular basis. For me, I’ve been fortunate enough to only have needed one less than a handful of times. And had this one not been as affordable as it was, I probably would still not have one.
@CurmudgeonExtraordinaire

@@TheNotSoOrdinaryCarGuy -- The only (slight) advantage that an electric winch has (other than cost) is that if the vehicle is not running, you might be able to still pull your vehicle a few feet just on battery power. I've never been in that situation,but I've definitely been in situations where I would have exceeded the duty cycle on an electric winch.

Surprisingly, a good deal of the Jeep JL's body is not magnetic...
@TheNotSoOrdinaryCarGuy
@TheNotSoOrdinaryCarGuy 23 күн бұрын
Yeah, a lot of the JL’s body is made of aluminum. Although, on the 392, the hood is made of steel, unlike non 392s, I believe in order to accommodate the weight of the hydroguide features.

@@TheNotSoOrdinaryCarGuy -- I was wanting to use a magnetic mount for something on my JL at some point and was using some pretty hefty magnets. I put one up to the windshield frame and no luck... Then tried various other places because I was a bit curious at that point and all of them were non-magnetic also... I didn't investigate whether the pieces were aluminum or a non-magnetic alloy of stainless steel... If I remember correctly, the rear quarter panel was magnetic though... I found that a bit odd...
@TheNotSoOrdinaryCarGuy
@TheNotSoOrdinaryCarGuy 23 күн бұрын
@@seanseoltoir Interesting. If you don't mind me asking, what was it that your trying to mount that used magnets? I do believe the tailgate uses a mixture of magnesium and aluminum or something like that.
