Absolutely!! I think that Ray Gillien originally left Black Sabbath to be in Blue Murder, but I am not sure what happened with that, but I love that he got the Badlands gig. Both are amazing bands and both have amazing guitar players.

This band was so dead-on excellent. I actually got to audition for this band right after Eric left (to join Kiss, maybe?). Talk about scary: it was an open cattle call set for 10am on a Saturday morning at local recording studio “Cerius Recording” - A really nice (and expensive!) kind of place. They were calling in drummers every 5 minutes, they'd go in and leave by another exit, which made it seem like they were being killed, or eaten. Or both. Everyone had to sign in upon arrival on a clip board at the front desk. When my turn came I walked in to the main room, there were only Jake & his manager. And a drum set. His manager said "You've got 3 minutes: impress us". And that’s what I tried to do. Afterwards I left through a back door leading out into the parking lot. Needless to say I didn't get the gig. Another Phoenician did (a friend of Greg's), the dude from Racer X, I believe, got the job. Seeing on how Greg & him played together in a previous band, I'm not too sure anyone else who showed up that morning had any kind of real chance at getting the gig. Still, it was one hell of a morning that I shall remember fondly, forever. Plus, it makes for a great true story.....

+Force666666 well, I did get to play with this Irish band in a Las Vegas Casino for a full year. 5 nights a week, 4 hours a night, 9pm to 1am, Wed thru Sun. I was the only non Irish guy, we did all Pogues, Waterboys, plus all the hits of the 60s.... the 1760s. we punkified all these old Irish drinking songs. made $1000 a week too. best money ever playing drums. dream come true. but the bandleader was a dick and I didn't reup. he had been on a season of mtvs real world, so that opens a lot of doors. better to be lucky than good!
@malcolmbliss7778 жыл бұрын
+Malcolm Bliss I meant The Pogues.

+Malcolm Bliss Thanks for sharing that story... I wasn't real fond of this band when it first surfaced in late 80's,, too bluesy I guess. But now, I really can appreciate it and like it a lot. Of course Jake being in it:) I like knowing that Jake was able to express himself the way he wanted without the restraints of Ozzy' band which makes it even more enjoyable to watch and listen to knowing that.

Greg chaisson said it best- Ray was the best singer of his generation. Those who know know. He just stood there and sang the living shit out of those songs. He was a true singer, not just a pretty face. Jake is a monster. When I heard this album back in 89, my jaw hit the floor when I heard Ray- I was a huge Coverdale fan. Anyone remember The Reseda Country Club? 1987 I was just 18 there to catch a show. I looked behind me and standing in the doorway was Ray Gillan. I went to meet him and ask what's happening with Black Sabbath. He was just 'let go' and was pretty pissed about it. He went into detail about the swiping of his vocals and replaced by Tony Martin. So I asked what he's gonna be doing. Ray asks me if I'm familiar with Jake E. Lee. Of course, Jake was just 'let go' from Ozzy and was my favorite guitar player ( I was at his last show with Ozzy - benefit concert at The Palladium in February 1987 - front row beeotches) That was a lengthy conversation I had with Ray, maybe 10 - 15 mins. Very open and honest guy I felt. I read the release date of the Badlands album and went to Tower Records in Northridge (now a pet hotel) sat in the parking lot and heard the whole album. Amazing. I may have missed maybe 3 shows here in the L.A. area but caught all the rest. The Troubadour, The Palace (now The Avalon), The Ventura Theater, etc, etc. So now it's on with Red Dragon Cartel. I never miss a show.

@user-pl2th5wj2h7 ай бұрын
Allegedly and with the knowledge that he probably had contracted AIDS,and being in total denial according to JEL in an old interview,he(Gillen)continued with the lifestyle of a 'Rock Star' thus endangering the people he was being intimate with.Alledgedly.As a result of this the royalties accrued from the first self-titled album,along with Voodoo Highway(and maybe Dusk),became the posthumous subject of litigation and these were withdrawn from sale .How much of this is true I'm not sure, Jake E.Lee wasn't really aware that people were after the late Ray Gillens estate with a view to claiming compensation as,once again allegedly the parties involved claimed he had infected them with the AIDS virus.This is just speculation but was put out there via several interviews in the US with people supposedly in the know.
@jayem37207 ай бұрын
@@user-pl2th5wj2h There's nothing "alleged", nor is it "speculative". Gillen, with full knowledge of being a carrier of the Aids virus, did in fact infect numerous other women via unprotected sex, resulting in the death of AT LEAST one of those sexual partners. As it pertains to the specificities behind the litigation, that part remains vague. Ray was a scumbag, PERIOD.

@larryfelgenhauer7696 жыл бұрын
Brian McGilvray No greater truth ever spoken !!! Most bass players never get the cred they deserve, unless they play in one of your top selling, #1 hit song playing bands !!! Greg is a phenomenal bass player and background vocalist, very underrated indeed !!! I love Jake and his guitar playing, as he is one of my all time fav guitarists, but without that thundering bottom end you get from the bass and drums; the sound just wouldn’t be the same !!! That guitar just can’t do it by itself alone; you need that oomph from the bass and drums to kick it in the ass and get it all going !!! I have always leaned towards the guitar players first, as I have recently at the ripe old age of 53, bought my first guitar and amp to learn to play as a hobby !!! But I’ve always had a respect for the bass players and drummers as well, for their prowess, on their chosen instrument !!! Also recently I feel very honored and privileged, not to mention giddy like a little kid, to have Greg accept me as a friend on his Facebook page !!! Just awesome to be associated with him in any way; being that he was and still is a ROCKSTAR !!! And yes he does like and comment on some of my posts from time to time; just awesome to know that they are real people just like us in real life tho, behind all the rockstar stuff !!! Sorry I’ll quit rambling now !!! LOL

The first time I heard Badlands was when they debuted their first album on radio station WVVX Chicago while going to get some beers in Hammond, In. back when you could get beers at 19 years old LOL. I tell you what, Ray and Jake were the best. To this day I still listen to this album and it doesn't get old. Going on 52 years old and still Jamming and having those cold beers! RIP Ray, you had a killer voice even while singing live that I haven't heard top yours yet or that ever will.

I'm with ya bro! I'm from the same town! And I heard it at the same time! No one will ever match the vocals of Ray and the guitar playing of Jake! R.I.P. Ray!!!
