I find using a rowing machine is really useful for rehab and giving feedback as to whether I'm getting making progress or making it worse. Awesome video! So much information and tips. I'm so glad i found this video. I've had a Bakers Cyst now for about about a month since i've discovered it (got sudden knee + leg pain). Doctor suggested anti-inflammatory meds(ibuprofen) & mild exercises for 2weeks, it didn't work. I might've overdone it with the exercises as well, the pain was bad after exercising. Then I got stronger meds(Mybulen & Meloxicam). After 2weeks of taking those meds (IT HAS TO BE TAKEN SEPERATELY), and having adequate rest for my leg each day. The pain has gone away completely. The cyst is still sometimes tender to the touch especially after much movement of the knee. All i've got is stiffness in the hamstring & quad muscles if i'm walking too fast/too much at one time. Or if my leg is bent a certain way, or extended all the way (i'm not there just yet). My motion has definitely increased since a month ago. And i'm sure with adequate exercises it will only get better. For the stiffness of hamstring & quad muscles I gradually massage it a few times a week after a warm shower. And i would take 1/2 Mybulen tablets if the stiffness feels really intense. Question though - Can i drive with this cyst?? I am afraid to drive just yet, as driving actually caused my leg pain when i discovered the cyst a month ago.
@SportsInjuryPhysio
@SportsInjuryPhysio 3 ай бұрын
There are 2 aspects to consider: 1. Are you safe driving - can you perform an emergency stop if needed? 2. How does it affect your knee - I would expect short distances to be OK but sitting in the car for long periods will likely hurt. But to be honest - you don't seem to know why the sudden pain started or what caused the cyst - a cyst in itself is not the main injury usually - there is usually something else like a meniscus tear that causes it. So, whatever the main driver for the cyst is will also determine if you can drive or not.
@tiffanybowers939
@tiffanybowers939 3 ай бұрын
@@SportsInjuryPhysio You are correct. I am unaware of what caused the cyst, hoping to see a specialist soon enough to findout 🙏🏼 With a sitting job, i'm uncomfortable most of the time. Another reason I prefer not to drive (e.g. traffic on the way to work etc). I will attempt shorter distance driving - not to eager at this point. Luckily, my husband has a stationary bike here which I will start using for light physio as well. Thank you so much for your response 🙏🏼🤍 Appreciate it

I've had issues with my left knee since I was a kid when I damaged it. The hospital stitched my knee back up without any kind of other test to make sure I didn't damage my knee joint, cartilage, tendons, or muscle. I have had X-rays and it only shows that I have osteoarthritis in it. They did an MRI but I can't remember what they actually said what's going on with it. I've been dismissed so many times over my knee pain. They only want to give me a shot of cortisone in my knee joint. Meanwhile the back of my leg as you state above and your video shows I have swelling in the back of my knee joint. And when I compare it to my right leg which is flat I'm assuming there's something going on as far as a baker's cyst. How do I truly get my doctors to actually do what they need to do to check to make sure that this isn't what it is. I'm 47 here soon and I'm really tired of all the pain on the front of my knee. Like I stated I just had a shot of cortisone on Tuesday of this past week. The pain has somewhat subsided but I'm still having pain in the same area. The pain is on the part of my knee cap right above it. The back of my knee does not hurt unless if I actually touch it. I've been using anti-inflammatory cream on most of my leg from my middle thigh all the way down and to my calf. And if and if the doctors I see now are not the appropriate kind of doctor to actually deal with a baker's cyst then which kind should I see?? I've been through orthopedic, a couple pain management doctors, quite a few family doctors, And I've even seen a neurologist over my leg. Which I do have nerve damage in my legs and feet and arthritis. I guess I'm extremely frustrated because I've complained most of my life over my leg hurting. They have also sent me through physical therapy probably three or four rounds of it. It will help to a certain point but I will still have a ton of pain yet.

I've been trying to figure out the source of my knee pain since I was a teen, but doctors have been very dismissive of my issues. Recently I went to the ER because I woke up with extreme pain in my left knee & I can barely walk because of the pain. Now that I know it's a Baker's cyst & fluid, I need to find the cause. Good luck to you in finding the cause of your problem and hopefully you'll get relief soon.

I have a very large baker cyst behind my right knee for around 25 years now. 76 years old now and recently feel some numbness in the front of my kneecap. Last orthopaedic consultation was 10 years plus ago and advised to avoid removal of cyst using surgery as the risk of infection is high, and if this infection is serious, it may lead to amputation. There is very little or no cartilage in this knee now. Can still get about ok and can do a limited daily exercise routine, but walking can be quite uncomfortable at times. Do you think I should look at a further consultant appointment or just grin and bear it?
@SportsInjuryPhysio
@SportsInjuryPhysio 9 ай бұрын
It sounds as if you would likely benefit from a knee replacement. If you don't have cartilage there is no use focusing on the cyst because that will likely just return if the knee has that grade arthritis. Being able to walk and move is super important for your general health and it sounds as if your knee is limiting that. I would go consult a consultant for an opinion.

I injured my knee 9 wks ago. X-rays show no fracture or significant arthritis. MRI shows complex radial medial meniscus tear, bone bruise & Baker's cyst. My DR says my knee is a MESS! The cyst is leaking. I'm still in a lot of pain. I'm on compression bandages, wear a brace & start PT in a wk. Agewise my DR does not want to do surgery unless I have mechanical symptoms. Last visit I said I was afraid I would have to have a knee replacement and he said he wouldn't be surprised. MRI also shows chondromalacia. I had NO knee pain or problems before the injury. It's depressing and there seems to be no solution.

Madame, What is the protocol of experiencing Baker's Cyst (mine is worse than ever now, after experiencing this condition for years off & on) for a Knee which is Bone on Bone form OA? I keep trying various exercises, calf stretches, and I have had at least 6 rounds of Synvisc (Euiflexxa is the same Hyauronic Gel) since 2013. I have a multitude of Spinal issues and a 1 inch Leg Length Discrepancy (the right leg) since 1967 (I'm 71 now - fractured right femur playing HS Football). Multiple sites of mild to moderate Spinal Stenosis from the Neck down to S1 vertebrae, disc bulging at L2, L3 [fore and aft] and L5-S1 with spondylioethesis. I had a torn mensiscus with surgery done in 1997 in that right knee. I'm Trying to avoid or at least delay Knee replacement. The left knee is Quasi Bone on Bone too. My PCP is recommending to do the knee replacement NOW while I'm well enough to withstand the recovery. My Ortho says that he has patients that have been able to continue to get the Synvisc injections for years w/o surgery?

The first few exercises (gentle ones) that I demonstrate in this video may be useful for you kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m8egm5OrsdLegH0.html But it sounds as if you will really benefit from seeing a physiotherapist who can assess you and help you with a rehab plan to improve them.

Yes, take hydrocodone, Ibuprofen 1200 every 6-8 hours and all pain goes away (for a while)... very seldom ice will work for me so I use a mini massage vibrator and heating pad snd all pain is gone👀🙏

You must speak to your doctor because if you are getting stomach pain from the medication, you should usually stop taking it.

What a great job you did of describing this and the treatment options. One question I have heard that they do a treatment with an ultrasound guided aspiration, is this something that you know about? Many thanks

Yes, the usually aspire the some of the fluid and then inject a steroid. It can help to calm things down but you then still have to look after it and allow it to properly settle or it will return - sometimes it resolves it completely and other times it comes back.

Thank you very much for your reply. So will get that done and keep up with all the good exercises you demonstrated as I have very little ROM on that knee

Do you think that rollskate is bad for baker cist
@SportsInjuryPhysio
@SportsInjuryPhysio Ай бұрын
It depends how it affects it - for some ppl it may be OK and others not - if your knee is not calming down then I would stop skating for a period and see if it helps. Or if you notice your knee is worse after, then it is likely not good for it. But if it does not affect it in 24 hours after, then it might be OK

Im 27 years old and this is ruining my life! I’m useless I can’t be active 2 days in a row or I’m done! Swelling, can’t straighten it all the way, up to nerve pain, my knee pinching my cartilage, I need to stop halfway thru my day and put as much pressure with my thumb on the back of my knee and then continue down my calf so that my calf stops feeling like it’s on the verge of cramping up with every step. Speaking of every step, I’m constantly flexing my thigh when i walk so that my knee doesn’t flip flop around. That speeds up the rate that it swells. Can’t straighten my leg all the way when I walk (I got about 95/100 percent mobility in my knees on a good day) or else it pinches on itself and I hit the deck. I got my knee brace but I had it on one time when it was all loose and swollen did a squat to get up and something must’ve rolled over and hit some nerve or something on the outside of my knee and I got all the hot/cold, pins and needles whenever I put weight on the joint. RICE 4 LIFE 😢❤

I know that it can be awful to stop running when it's your life, but you are going to delay getting better more and more by continuing to force your knee to exercise. If you can allow it time to calm down and then slowly start strengthening it, it will get you back to pain-free running much more quickly than if you continue down your current road. This is all easier said than done - but try and make that mind shift and find some other activity that you can do in the meantime to help you get some exercise without annoying your knee.

Is walking beneficial for someone with baker’s cyst?
@SportsInjuryPhysio
@SportsInjuryPhysio 3 ай бұрын
It can be but there is a usually a limit - if you walk too much, it can make your knee more stiff. So, test and see what works. The rule with rehab and exercise is usually that it is OK to do as long as: 1. It only causes a slight discomfort while doing it, AND 2. It does not cause an increase in your pain and swelling that lasts for more than 24 hours Cycling tends to be the better option for this type of injury.

If it does not increase your symptoms significantly in the 24 hours after doing it, then it is usually ok to continue

3:37 Re Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) How I found out I had a Bakers Cyst. About 10 years ago I was at my wits end, having been to the GP several times over a couple of years and complained of an extremely uncomfortable feeling in my right leg. It literally felt heavy, to lift my leg I'd need to use my hands to bring it up comfortably. Even holding my foot over the accelerator pedal of my vehicle would be a mission to do. After checking my symptom on Google, I finally went back to the GP and told him I may have Deep Vein Thrombosis. The Doctor at the time, not my doctor anymore, sent me to get an ultrasound but I know what he was thinking, he thought I was some hypochondriac or google doctor, I don't know or care. According to him my leg checked out, I had good blood circulation etc. Here you have got to laugh as to the knowledge of the lady who did the ultrasound on my leg. After doing the usual groin to knee ultrasound she said I should turn over, then ran the ultrasound down my buttocks to the back of my knee, then promptly exclaimed "I knew it, you have a Bakers Cyst". Just like that, my suffering had a name!!! Oh, my goodness I thought, lady you don't know how many years I have been struggling with this DVT feeling in my leg and you in an instant tell me what the problem was. In my case you can't notice a rounding at the back of knee, there is no lump, but the Bakers Cyst showed up nicely on the MRI later. I went to the Knee Clinic thereafter and the Specialist did an arthroscopy on my knee, I had a meniscus tear. They also drained the Bakers Cyst at a later appointment using a needle and local anaesthetic. My leg is still not OK but much better than it was. After the meniscus operation the Specialist said I'd probably get inflammation going downhill, where the synovial fluid builds up more than usual. He mentioned that there may be some Osteoarthritis in the knee joint. My other leg is 100%, just this one, I think I twisted it badly while stepping off a platform one day long ago, as the leg just gave way and I fell to the floor. At the time I thought it quite strange as I stood up and I was Ok. In my case it seems I have to either go back for a second look, it's been about 7 years now and maybe they can reexamine the knee with an MRI or even drain the Cyst again. I do know that draining the Cyst doesn't resolve the problem as the synovial fluid excretes excessively because of a tear or damage to the meniscus. Maybe I should try a different Doctor this time, he can put new eyes on my diagnosis when he looks at the MRI. Otherwise, the more I exercise the better my leg. If I could just go hiking for 2 or 3 times a week, I doubt I would have any issues. Sitting on a chair in my office worsens the condition. Thanks for your video. 🙂

Spike is one of the best docs out there. It sounds as if you have a typical knee with bit of wear and tear - if movement helps, is there any way you can make it easier to get daily exercises? E.g. stationary bike at home etc.? These things usually don't have a fix - they need management - so if you can find a way to manage it so it gives minimal issues then that is first prize.
