Bakura:*throws away Millinium Ring* Yami Bakura a few weeks later: "I am once again asking for your Body"

Bakura is underrated

For all the context that the dub took out of the show, one introduction that I retroactively found _fascinating_ after the end of the series was how often Bakura would serve as sort of a color commentator for other characters' duels, commentating on strategic choices and board states with an experience seemingly on par with even Yugi. Something else seemingly unrelated until you think about it was that it's shown on a few occasions that Yami Bakura can mimic Ryou Bakura's voice, to the point where nobody can even tell that anything is amiss. Put those two dub-induced plot points together and it suggests that Yami Bakura is _always_ in Bakura's head constantly, and the amount of time that Ryou Bakura is genuinely free from Yami Bakura's influence in the dub might be _far_ less than we would think. Another equally plausible idea is that, if that really _is_ Ryou Bakura making all those calls and game state analyses, Ryou Bakura must be _really good_ at the game. Like _scarily_ good. Just how good could he be if he really got the chance to let loose? Could he even beat Kaiba if he had to? (Yes, I know Kaiba and Yami Bakura technically dueled, but Yami Bakura had no intent of doing anything more than loading Diabound up with Blue-Eyes' power, so him throwing the game abruptly was just part of a larger scheme and shouldn't reflect any actual prowess or lack thereof.) The other weird thing about Bakura is his card choice, especially relative to everybody else. I like to think that Bakura's deck in Duelist Kingdom was competitively illegal, hence why the duel between Bakura and Yugi had to be some unsanctioned fun duel. After all, how terrifying could a Blue-Eyes White Dragon possibly be in a format where Man-Eater Bug is legal? But then again, if that made sense, literally everybody would be running a Summoned Skull unless they had a _very_ good reason not to, and they don't. You'd think at least _Kaiba_ would use one (he certainly has no qualms with making people face down a playset of Blue-Eyes), but no, and his reasoning _can't_ just be "1200 DEF lol", as if Kaiba would care. But if Bakura's deck _is_ legal, the fact that he would use cards like White Magical Hat, Man-Eater Bug, Electric Lizard, and of course Change of Heart suggests that Ryou Bakura himself uses a control deck, something virtually unheard of at this point in the story, even from supposed pro players like Weevil (combo) or Mai (voltron). If you look at his duels, Bakura is _always_ one step ahead of the rest of the in-universe meta. In Duelist Kingdom, he uses effect monsters long before anybody else. In Battle City, he responds to other fairly aggressive strategies with instant-win combos that masterfully use his own life points as a resource while casually laughing off opposing beaters. (In fact, if the Winged Dragon of Ra wasn't a cheating SOB of a card, he would've smoked Yami Marik. ...Then again, so would Mai.) And in his final duel with Yugi, he fights Yugi's fully-loaded goat-format-esque control deck with a _mill lock_ of all things. Unless we are supposed to believe that Yami Bakura steals tons of cards when Ryou isn't looking, Ryou must _have_ all those cards, possibly in decks he personally runs. If so, Ryou Bakura himself is one of the most dangerously intelligent characters in the entire Duel Monsters arc, making even _Kaiba_ look like he's playing some kind of brainless aggro beatdown by comparison. And if Ryou _is_ that smart, think how sadistic that would make Yami Bakura: someone who would recognize and exploit young brilliance for his own ends, carelessly smothering any chance Ryou had of making something of himself as a duelist in his own right. Ryou could've been the Magnus Carlsen of Duel Monsters, but to Yami Bakura, he's just a useful tool at best.

The Yami Bakura & Bakura dynamic is very overlooked in the yugioh franchise. This was a pretty good analysis on their relationship.

Bakura was such a tragic character a shame there wasn’t at least an arc dedicated for Bakura attempting to fight back mirroring the duel between Yugi and Atem it’s Bakura and Yami but I believe it would be a Joey vs Marik situation Bakura fought very well since deep down when Yami took over he knows his tricks and moves but ultimately lose in the end.

I feel like the series should havefocused on Bakura more and explored his inner struggle with Yami Bakura. Only time we saw Bakura fight back against his darkside was during the first confrontation between Yami Yugi and Yami Bakura.

Bakura was the ultimate villain of DM. He made Pegasus and Marik look like chumps. And Bakura was a very talented duelist despite his record.

Bakura was always my favorite character. I loved the duality of the softspoken and nice Bakura and the evil cunning Bakura. I was rooting for him so hard against Marik in Battle City. Shame they didn't give him more spotlight.

It has always felt like Bakura and Yami Bakura was a reflection of what Yami Yugi and Yugi could have been, had Yami been more cruel and Yugi been more weak. (similar to season zero?)

Honestly, it's actually kinda interessting how characters can differ in diffrent versions of the story. In the manga and Toei anime, there is a scene where the spirit stabs Bakura's hand, yet no such aggression is made in the Duel Monsters anime. From the perspective of that anime, the one time he physically went too far with him(putting him on the duel field in a horrible state), he chickened out of it.(With the stated rationale of "I can't risk loosing my vessal", but the changed anime-context makes it less clear. Due to his anime-despiction being less about trickery as a whole, it could legitimately be seen as an intentionally out of character-responce due to remaining memories of Thief King Bakura's tragic past. Obviously not in the sense of "I care about you", but rather a "I don't feel like seeing this right now".) He's also just a lot less insanely evil in the anime, as he doesn't just violently delete Pegasus from existance, unlike in the manga. From the perspective of actual Bakura, the rewritten 4kids dub has a plothole where they kept the backstory from the japanese anime of his father buying the ring from some random guy while he was away, but then they made the dub of DSoD part of their continuity, even tho it was supposed to be for the manga exclusively, and that movie has the scene of how Bakura was there in egypt and how he got the ring. One way this could be reasoned with is that this just means that the dubbing team accidentially introduced an implied plotpoint where the event was straight up too traumatic for Bakura as a kid and thus his mind made up some logical sounding story that doesn't involve a dark ring knocking two people out with one of them dying from it. Honestly, this is kinda the beauty of Yu-gi-oh in a way. There are so many impactful characters and storylines across multiple decades of media that cover multiple versions of the same stories sometimes and even tho not every piece of writing in there is amazing, it is really fun to look into the standout details that are great and how they were crafted, be it from precisely planned intention or by lucky accident.

Bakura was one of my most favorite characters in original Yugioh series, especially his Yami counterpart. Unfortunately after Bakura isn't under the control of his dark self, we never see him do amything as cool as Yami Bakura would. If there was ever a way Bakura might have been as good as his Dark self if not better was was if he ended up becoming the Tommy Oliver of the Yugioh series! Now to anyone who has ever watched Power Rangers, you should know that in his younger days, Tommy Oliver started his Ranger career as a mind puppet for Rita Repulsa in the 1st series, until the Ranger team at the time freed him, which would give him a chance to redeem himself by joining the PR as their 6th member, and using his powers for good. So if Yugioh ever used this for Bakura, then I believe that if he ever wanted to make amends to Yugi and the others he wronged before, he would use his past experience with Yami Bakura as a reason to be a better than he was. Plus if by some chance any of Yami Bakura's cards were left intact, then I think he should use there powers to help others rather than hurt them. For example if Bakura still had Diabound, he could use its effect stealing powers to borrow the effects of its fallen comrades, such as using one of the effects of Yugi's monsters in the likely event they were in a tag duel. Who knows, it might have been the original Odd-Eyes Venom Dragon? Well I don't know about you, but what do you think?

Using a shared account to comment: In 'The Dark Side of Dimensions' Aigami gains Bakura's hair when he becomes "Dark Diva"! It's my opinion that the Millennium Ring was still housing the soul of Thief King Bakura even though Zorc was purified and destroyed, and that is why the Millennium Ring is still so incredibly corrupting, because the soul of Thief King Bakura is still not repentant for his actions as Yami Bakura even after being freed from Zorc; so he was trying to turn Mani and then Diva into a new host. (The Ring may have the power to consume souls that then live inside it; evil Bakura and prior to that Zorc may just have been the most dominant.) Personally, I hope this isn't the last we see of the Millennium Ring if for no other reason than I want to see further development of evil Bakura as a character, but with a different host or with his own body.

Thank you. This is a dynamic no one talks about nearly enough. I absolutely despise "Yami Marik", that ruined Malik as a character and was a cheap knock off of this pairing but edgier.

This relationship helped me a lot with my dissociative identity disorder growing up. It's a sad but excellent portrayal of fighting with your own dark side in a cartoon. I developed a hyperfixation on these characters when I was 8 as I was going through a lot of self harm that the internal narrative became something like this without all the magic anime logic.

I feel like in a messed up sense Bakura did care for ryou. Because, he could have actively hurt their body as payback but he never does also keep in mind Unlike Atem Yami Bakura. Never got away from that part of zorc that's inside of him so it was always influencing him.

Tbh one thing to note is even Yami Bakura is not really born evil. He was pretty much traumatized by what Aknadin does in the first place. And everyone just turn a blind of eye of this massacre while he was forced to watch everyone is killed. And to make it worse nobody but Aknadin knows it since he then hypnotized the Soldiers to forgot about the whole incident.
