I recall that in the final season of duel monsters, each millennium item had a special power to control or imprison monsters or Ka as the japanese version often referred to it. The Millennium Rod was capable of manifesting the inner power or ka of someone with great darkness, hatred, or despair into the monster that often dwells in their souls. In this semi-present time, we know that the Ishtars had possession of the Rod and the Necklace. Now consider this: Marik was not only traumatized and even wounded, both physically and psychologically by the ritual or initiation and developed a hatred for both the nameless pharaoh whom no one knows whether or not he's even returned or ever truly will and towards the circumstances of this nameless pharaoh that has led to Marik's own life-long isolation. With being near the Rod at all times, its a possibility that the Rod's power influenced the manifestation of Yami Marik's personality as Marik's hatred and terror began to rise more as time passed. And when the incident with him seeing Odion/Rishido tortured and Yami Marik emerging for the first time, they were in the same room as the Rod. Of the three Yamis, Yami Marik was the only one who wasnt a pre-existing spirit from the past. He simply was just manifested from the Rod's power out of Marik's Hatred and Despair.

I think that Yami Marik exists because of the trauma that Marik went through with his dad and the millennium items. I think Yami Marik could be a physical manifestation of Mariks darkest thoughts and he could also be a result of Mariks split personality disorder. Idk just my opinion 😂

I feel like Yami Marik is indeed an alter ego however he is only venting out the things that marik cannot. See, All of Marik's Hate and Pain is what Yami Marik gives to others these are the things marik bottles up and and as a consequence Yami Marik has to deal with those emotions he is in a sense a way to vent them.

If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say Odion probably thought a lot about what had transpired, and before Marik came back to himself after it was all over, decided it would be best to lie to him, telling him that someone else murdered their father. I mean Odion had to know that Marik was already physically and mentally scarred for life because of the Tomb Keepers' initiation ritual, and he probably thought that divulging the truth about what really happened would be too much for someone so young who had already been through so much. Of course we're all well aware of how horribly that decision backfired, but if I were in Odion's position, I don't know if I would have done things any differently. I mean I'm no expert on the matter, but I can't imagine telling someone, especially a young kid who has already endured a terribly traumatic experience, that they just inadvertently murdered one of the only people they've ever known over the course of their entire life during a blackout, can be beneficial to that person's mental health. I'm assuming Odion knew that, and made what he thought was the best decision at the time. Did things go south? they most certainly did, but to be fair, in that moment, no one had any way of knowing the full consequences of telling that lie.

Here me out. Yami Marik is just Marik Ishtar's Ka in a different form. And I mean Ka as in Yu-Gi-Oh Ka from Dawn of the Duel Arc. Just a late night theory that mixes what I know of Ancient Egyptian Ka and what Ka are depicted in Yu-Gi-Oh.

So the Yami version of these yugioh characters are just buckle insane got it

From the perspective of the manga, Yami Marik's inclusion and story role is very questionable. Conceptually, it has sorta the vibe of "Takahashi needed a crazy finish to the arc and felt like taking the blame off of Malik, so he pulled the card of an even bigger evil dude overshadowing prior events". I feel as though the anime sorta fixed this issue by marking slightly more solid and less vague lines in the sand. Even tho he still intends to take other people as collateral damage, he at least doesn't do the move of taking Pandora's and Anzu's free wills away entirely with the goal of making them yeet themselves. Making him seem less unhinged and evil just makes it easier to accept that it has all been a misunderstanding from the start. Assuming we can accept his existance, I think that the idea of the relationship between the two Mariks works regardless of medium however, because the core of the concflict is very thightly linked to its resolution. Marik's two primary motivations were to avenge the death of his father by killing the one responsible and to liberate his people from their duty, as it has only caused him pain and suffering in the past. The thing is, these two objectives are fulfilled by the end of the arc. By surrendering the duel and letting Yami Marik be torn apart by the shadows, the actual murderer is no more. And by guiding Yami Yugi to his final mission, he ended the duty of the tombkeepers towards the Pharao, just by following the duty instead of working to destroy it. It vaguely follows the thematic established in the duel between Seto and Yami Yugi, with the idea that setting aside your past and walking towards the future does not have to literally equate to setting fire to the road behind you and forcing the road infront of you to be built. There are moments where one has to first confront the past before new history can be written naturally.

@Dimzy's Domain Huge fan of the original Yugioh and GX the other shows never got my interest. I had a theory so you remember the Sacred Beast Cards from Yugioh GX right ? They were never explained in the anime. I refuse to watch subtitles cause if I wanted to read I would read a book. So my head cannon is that the Sacred Beast Cards were accidentally created by Marik and his rare hunters during the process of creating the fake Egyptian god cards. It makes sense to me. Who else would have the resources and know how of the ancient scriptures to even attempt something like that other than Marik and even then it was a fluke. After the dust settled somehow Kaiba got hold of the Sacred Beast Cards. This is Kaiba we are talking about so his ambition eventually resulted in him finding the cards and then setting up duelist academy to figure out how to summon them or control them.

Tbh I do think Yami Marik is a different person from marik, in my opinion (Ima call Yami Marik Malick) Malick sort of acts like a demon in a way and probably is a demon, maybe specifically of destruction or revenge..? Malick seems to know alot about things that it shouldn’t know about and I think it’s been here longer than we think it has, their is no way Marik could have thought up those extreme stunts by themself their had to atleast be some influence to maybe it was acting as a inner voice this who time , and that’s why when malick was trying to take over Marik was all then willing to get rid of malick because they knew the truth? Demons in many ways could linger for years on end for someone to make a deal or strike down when someone is sinning, could that be the case here? Malick could also not have a physical body and that’s why when possessing Marik does the possession look nothing like how Marik looks since when the spirits seem to possess their owner they have very subtle changes to their appearance, while malick transformation is more extreme. Also did you notice Marik body changing drastically? I mean malick seemed to turn buff in like two seconds and grew in height, demons don’t look human right that why malick look so uncanny to look at it’s not human. I mean that kinda my conclusion as the split personality thing wouldn’t make sense here as personallys don’t change your physical appearance, but that’s just my opinion. -E

I have mixed feelings about Malik Ishtar Sometimes I love him and love the fact that despite all he was just trying to save his family from their cruel fate Sometimes I think that what he did was horribly questionable, like c’mon. He manipulated people into doing his bidding without even caring, he risked Yuugi and Jonouchi’s life in an anchor duel and even put his brother into a coma. And sometimes I find his motives quite cowardly, selfish and ungrateful as to me, a brave person would not just simply try to run away from the tombkeeper’s initiation and from their fate. And to me only selfish and ungrateful people would betray their family for “freedom” I love this video by the way. Bravo!
