*|| Brief video notes (not comprehensive) ||* - Ramadan is a time of fear and hope. - Allaah says (translation of the meaning): So We responded to him, and We gave to him John, and amended for him his wife. Indeed, they used to hasten to good deeds and supplicate Us in hope and fear, and they were to Us humbly submissive. [21:90]. This ayah mentions hope and fear. - Ibn Al-Qayyim said that the heart on its journey to Allaah is like a bird: loving Allaah is the head, and fear and hope are the two wings. Whenever the two wings are healthy and sound, the bird flies well, when the head is cut off the bird dies, and when a wing is lost then the bird becomes prey for every hunter. - So we have to balance fear and hope. - If we are too hopeful and think that it doesn't matter if we sin because Allaah will just forgive us, then we need to increase our fear. And if we are too fearful thinking there's no point doing good deeds because I'm going to be in the hellfire, then we need to increase our hope. - Some scholars like Ibn Baaz said that when a person is healthy and well, they should incline more towards fear. Likewise when a person is sick and weak they should include more towards hope. - Never feel despair, and never feel hopeful to the point of laziness thinking that whatever you do you will be successful. - The Muslim is between hope and fear in Ramadan and at all times.

*Ramadan Droplet **#Day25**: Balancing fear and hope.* Allah said: اولائك الذين يدعون يبتغون إلى ربهم الوسيلة أيهم أقرب ويرجون رحمته ويخافون عذابه They are the ones who seek closeness to their lord, hoping for the mercy of their Lord, and fearing the His punishment. Ibn Al Qayyim said this Ayah contains all 3 characteristics of the believer : Hope for Allah’s mercy, fear of His punishment, and Love (يبتغون إلى ربهم الوسيلة أيهم أقرب) Allah said describing the prophets ويدعوننا رغبا ورهبا They used to call upon Us With fear and hope. Ibn Al Qayyim said : القلب في سيره إلى الله عز وجل في منزلة الطائر... The heart in its path to Allah is like a bird with two wings, Love of Allāh is the head of the bird, and fear and hope are the two wings. Whenever the head and wings are sound the bird will fly. But when the head is cut off, The bird dies, and when one of its wings are cut off, it becomes a prey to any wind animal, due to the weakness of its wings. A Muslim should always try to balance between fear and hope. Anytime he feels relaxed and too hopeful, fear of Allah’s punishment should scare him. And when he is in despair, he should remember Allah’s mercy. When he is healthy and well, he should incline more towards hope. and When he is sick, one should incline more towards hope. This was mentioned by Ibn Bāz and other scholars before him. Just as the bird raises its wings and and adjusts its way of flying in order to balance with the winds and keep moving forward, similarly the slave should balance and adjust his wings of hope and fear as required by his situation. If you do this, you will never despair, nor will you ever be too hopeful that it makes you lazy. Shaykh Ibn Bāz said الواجب على المسلم ألا يقنط ولا يأمن، ويكون بين الرجاء والخوف لان الله ذم الامنين وذم القانطين ، فقال سبحانه {أفأمنوا مكر الله } وقال {لا تقنطوا من رحمة الله } It is obligatory upon a Muslim to not despair nor feel safe, rather maintain a state between fear and hope. Because Allāh has rebuked those who feel safe and those who despair in the ayaat أفامنوا مكر الله فلا يأمن مكر الله إلا القوم الخاسرون And he also said لا تقنطوا من رحمة الله Hasan Al Basri said: المؤمن يعمل بالطاعات وهو مشفق وجل خائف ، والفاجر يعمل بالمعاصي وهو آمن A believer does acts of obedience while he is trembling, in a state of fear and scared, while the wicked person does evil deeds feeling safe believing nothing is going to happen to him. والذين يؤتون ما آتوا وقلوبهم وجلة أنهم إلى ربهم راجعون The prophet SAW told Aisha RA this Ayah describes the ones who give charity and prays and fasts but is scared that his deeds will not be accepted. In Ramadan we have many reasons to be hopeful. But we also have many reasons to be scared. The Hadith: رغم أنف رجل دخل عليه رمضان ثم انسلخ منه قبل أن يغفر له This Hadith contains both fear and hope. Fear because it makes us fear that we may be amongst those who are not forgiven. And hope because there are so many opportunities for forgiveness in Ramadan. Also we find hope in the Hadith : when Ramadan comes, The Shayateen and Jinn are tied up, the doors of jahannam are closed and not a single one of them is opened, and the doors of Jannah are opened and not a single one is closed, and a caller cries out: يا باغ الخير اقبل ! ويا باغ الشر اقصر O doer of good come forward, and o doer of Evil desist! And Allāh has Every day and Every night a group of people whose necks he frees from the fire, every night of the month of Ramadan. There are a few days and nights left of Ramadan! And you have the chance to be amongst the عتقاء , does this not bring you hope? Even if you didn’t do ANYTHING this Ramadan, there still remains time left for you to be from those freed from the fire! So there are great reasons for hope! But also great reasons for fear. إنما يتقبل الله من المتقين Indeed Allah only accepts from those who fear Him. Hence Ramadan is a time between hope, Fear and love. As we should be in the rest of our lives. So if you feel despair that there’s no time left and you haven’t done enough, you need to increase in hope. And the times you’re relaxed and think your sins are insignificant, increase in fear and rush to the forgiveness of Allah.

Assalamu’alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu, Ma sha Allah Bird’s head - Love towards Allah SWT, It’s two wings are Fear and Hope towards Allah Az zawajal. I liked this example a lot and why the two wings should be balanced abd if head missing bird has died and if any wing misses it becomes prey to beasts. Subhan-Allah. I love this series. May Allah SWT help us togain benefecial knowledge followed by actions that bring us closer to HIM. Jazakallah Khair Team AMAU

What practical steps can one take to balance both fear and hope in Allah. So, if a practising Muslims does deeds out of fear of Allah swt, then the worship will NOT be accepted?
