The Long Way's Better

Жыл бұрын

One of the best and most spectacular coastal hikes in Australia, the Bald Head Walk Trail traverses the hilly Flinders Peninsula in Torndirrup National Park, taking walkers along the high coastal ridge to its easternmost point at Bald Head. Upgraded in 2022 as part of DBCA's Great Southern Adventure Trails Project, I was privileged to check out the trail while it was still a work in progress.
For more info (and photos of the trail before the upgrades), check our our write up at the Long Way's Better blog: thelongwaysbetter.blogspot.com...
Stay tuned for the first three seasons of The Long Way's Better:
Day Walks of the Perth Outdoors coming April 2023
Day Walks of the Great Southern coming June 2023
South Coast Track (Tasmania) coming August 2023

Done this walk twice now. The first time in July on a cool day with light showers. At the end we were greeted by a rainbow spanning over the peninsula and whales breaching either side ... was just amazing! Could have sat and watched for hours, although we had left our walk until the afternoon and only had a few hours to get back so, like Donovan, had to "leg it". The second time was in April on a cool sunny day. This time we had a longer lunch break at the end and saw what we believe to be two pygmy blue whales pass by quite close. Have also attempted in December, but was too hot so turned back after an hour. Highly recommend during whale season June - October, when the weather is mild.

Totally agree with your recommended months range, first time I did it was in January and by the end of it I felt like I was on fire from the lack of shade. Definitely much more pleasant in the cooler months with Autumn and Spring probably providing the most balanced conditions, though you can luck out on one of those perfect cold but sunny and clear Winter days that are just perfection for a walk like this

Thanks for subscribing! The improvements are really good, I was very impressed with the detail they put into it. The crew building the steps were literally walking out there every day so it is a commendable effort

Great vid Donovan. This has been on my to-walk list for a while. Umbrella looks weird but you can't argue that walking in shade is nice. Thanks for sharing!

Looking forward to seeing the upgrades in person. Lovely video that showcases the trail perfectly. I'm on the fence about the umbrella.

Thanks Mark! There is no fence sitting when it comes to umbrella; in time you will have to choose a side. It is either the most brilliant thing in the history of mankind or the stupidest thing that only a doofus would consider using!

May I ask what month of the year you did this? Was it actually in December? I think your umbrella is great - doofus’s of the world unite! ✊Where did you get it and how does it attach? ☺☂ Heading down to do this in May, will probably be a fair bit cooler then.

Hi there, glad there are others doofuses who recognise the superiority of the umbrella! I did the trail in October actually as I had permission for early access. Was not too hot but still high UV out there on the peninsula. I've done it in January before which was pretty challenging from a heat stress perspective. May would be perfect weather. I got the umbrella online from Wild Earth. It is the Euroschirm Swing Handsfree Umbrella and comes with attachments that you loop through your waist strap and them clip to the main shoulder straps

Great video mate. It's a beautiful spot and the upgrades look amazing! Definitely gonna check this trail out sometime. BTW, looks like you have overcome your aversion to drones lolz! And the umbrella looks a bit daft, but I bet it's highly effective.

Thank you! It is a great trail, and I definitely endorse the upgrades. The guys did an amazing job. Still a bit averse to drones to be honest. I still feel a video that is all drone (or the obsession with drone shots on Instagram) is a bit disingenuous as a representation of the experience, but I can see that a small, sparing use of drone shots can help with storytelling. Yeah, I'm well aware at how silly the umbrella looks, but when you spend as much time in the Sun as I do you've got to think about these things. And on a trail as open and lacking in shade as Bald Head it beats a hat hands down.

I have done this walk over 300 times. Loved it for it's simplicity and hard work. Don't know if I want to do it now. I knew every nook and cranny along it's path, what's the matter humans having to deal with nature, instead of changing nature to deal with humans.

Can't say I've walked Bald Head 300 times, but definitely done it a few times over the last decade. I'm not for over the top construction just to make it easy for people, but environmentally I've witnessed this trail get more and more eroded over the years, particularly that sandy section just before Bald Head itself. Beyond being harder, erosion has environmental issues as well, and for that reason alone I support what they've done. But to each their own; I can understand wanting it left as it was.

@@thelongwaysbetter Yea, true. I was just thinking, the hardest part is the long sandy downhill section. That is where the most changes will be I would imagine. Looking forward to going out in the next few weeks. I must admit, 96% will still be natural, there will only a small amount that will have been made easier. So yes, I will still be going out there. I am a local and the amount of people I meet from around the world all believe it is one of the best walks.

Sorry but that umbrella looks really stupid!! What's wrong with a wide brimmed hat to protect you from the sun?
@thelongwaysbetter
@thelongwaysbetter Жыл бұрын
I’m well aware at first glance it makes you look like a doofus, but when you feel the wind in your hair instead of the sweat from a hat on your head, it is clearly a superior technology

@@thelongwaysbetter Whatever. I wear a wide brimmed hat that's very well ventilated, so not only does it protect me from the sun, it also keeps my head cool and dry.
