Turn the well inlet into an aerator? That way it doesn't drill through the clay liner and enhances the pond health (meaning better bass!) I would drain and build the dock right the first time with piers and avoid the floating dock. My last suggestion would be getting some 3 or 4 inch plastic pipe and criss cross it inside the willow cage and zip tie it to the cage. That way when the willows rot in 2 or 3 years, the pipe will still be a great fish attractor.

Fantastic idea I gotta take notes for all these ideas once I build my own pond.
@thoriated

I agree with building the dock the right way now, even if you have to let some water out and delay the fill. It's just going to be more troublesome to go back and do it over later with plants and fish in the pond. Put some rip-rap stones at the fill pipe to hold it in place, break up the flow and limit the erosion. Once there is water over it you won't be able to see what it's doing. Hate for it to blow a hole through the liner. You could also drill small holes along the submerged length to reduce the force of flow, like a drip hose.

@@thoriated A floating dock would be even better. Wood/metal pilings rot and rust, not to mention that you have to put posts in, possibly damaging the liner. Floating docks last far longer and there's no risk of damaging anything.

My uncle , my cousin & I did this very thing back in 2009 with 60 acres on my uncles land . I’m from the Mid West . The first thing my uncle did was find a natural spring then had it capped & redirected a creek so it would flow into the lake & back out again . It took 5 years before we could fish it because we had to make sure the ecosystem was viable for the fish . Now it’s a thriving lake & my uncle stocks it regularly . It’s a blast to fish & we don’t have to go far to fish it .

Definitely agree with this comment. This is how we keep our watering pivots from sinking deep into the ground from erosion. We set big lava rock for it to walk on. Helps prevent more erosion and gives the pivot something solid to be on.

I'm moving to NC and in time I plan to buy a 40 acre plot of farm land to eventually build a "Ohio" round barn that can seat 500 people for events comfortably for receptions and events while doubling as a restaurant during the week. This is something I would like to do with a large island with an outdoor gazebo for outdoor ceremonies while I also have bonfire pits. The overall plan is to eventually have the pond filled with Koi fish and lotus flowers. I just love this!

I hope you open the drain up and let the water drain to the point of being able to build the type of dock that you want to have. There will be many years of enjoying the dock you want instead of enduring the dock you don't want. You spent the money on the well, and you did the manual labor of putting in the 2" fill pipe, you know that you can fill the pond manually if in fact you don't get the typical rain you talk about in every video. With all of that said, stay safe! I for one am praying for not just your family, but all of the impacted areas from Ida, and I'm sure many others are as well. Blessings to you and yours, Mr. BamaBass!!

I think you need to dump a load of gravel where the well comes into the pond to help limit the erosion. You might also/instead put 30 degree bend pointing upward, once there's a few feet of water. That way, the steam will be disrupted by the existing water, rather than having a heavy stream of water running parallel to your clay liner.

Something to keep in mind regarding your well water is that it typically is not oxygenated at all and can create some problems with your dissolved oxygen levels effectively creating a potential dead zone in your pond. You may want to consider creating a creek bed for the last 50' or so before the water reaches the pond, giving it time to tumble over rocks and aerate to the point that it's healthy with oxygen by the time it hits your pond. Plus, that could be a really nice feature to add to the overall environment you are creating with this project.
@PurpleDrac
@PurpleDrac Жыл бұрын
that's a great recommendation and how did he aerate the pond?? I remember him driving around on a boat doing tests but he never showed us how he oxygenated it. Glad I came across this comment. @@PurpleDrac thanks for the comment. I think he ended up routing the pipe or hose so the water shot out of it. That was a minimal way of oxygenating the water but it was a statt. Wind causing waves, even small ones, is also a great source of adding oxygen and with a pond that size, there is certainly a lot of surface area to be affected by wind.

Awesome. Yeah I was one of those ppl wondering why it was so shallow... I imagined it drying up during a drought or if a tractor hit that line. But 12' is deeper than it looked. I hope you get a time lapse of it filling! So satisfying!

After riding out Ida in New Orleans, we had to leave the city because of the lack of power, fuel, and food. We’re hanging out in Fairhope and checking out some of the Mobile area. I’m keeping an eye out for a beautiful new pond among the peanut fields! With all the trees that went down in the storm, you could do his and hers thrones for Bonnie and Clyde. Love the series, thanks for sharing.

Willow root system might compromise the clay liner. Can get 100 ft or better from the tree. I’ve seen them crack foundation walls. Be careful with trees planted next to your pond.

I"m a colorado boy and can tell you that 80 degree plus days put a lot of stress on trout. even our game and fish department recommends not to target trout if the temperatures are too warm. they say to keep the trout and not release them because they probably won't live. I like the idea of small mouths. keep in mind they need rocky bottoms to do well.

bama! I live waterfront on a lake and started with a wooden dock, sledge hammering poles into the lakebed, and eventually upgraded to aluminum. my aluminum dock has plates on the bottom of the supports that just sit nicely on the lake floor, and I can tie boats up to it just fine. For your purposes a floating dock would work just fine. No reason to risk the integrity of your clay layer.

I'd drain the pond and then build the dock so you reach your 100% completion vs a floating dock. Otherwise it will bug you. You can always fill it back up with the well if nature is taking too long.

I did mine with 3/8” right twist #14 skewed clockwise a quarter turn, and to keep backwash from closing out the effluent flow. I use a 1/4” flange connected to a 6mm arc adapter and then terminate the assembly with a reverse confabulator offset by half again the distance between the elbow termination and the reverse-under hold brackets, which are set back by twice the width of the chrono-synclastic infundibulum. Cheers.

Also, to keep from getting runoff channels in the clay when you fill with the pump, run a fire hose from the 2" pipe to the standing water at the deep end. Fill from above the surface so that the flow doesn't disturb the clay bottom. As the pond fills you can just pull the hose back up.
