She's so much fun to watch. I never miss one Akane head angle on Band-Maid Prime......well worth the subscription price.

A very imaginative performer. She's one of the best rock drummers right now. IMO , When I see other drummers spinning their sticks, I say, `If you had time, you should hit it ten times more!' I would think. I really like how Akane points the stick straight up and raises it high. Yes, everyone pay attention!

Anyone who likes Band-Maid, or is a fan of Band-Maid, or is a certified Maidiac, owes it to themselves to experience IN FULL, both 2017 Shinkiba Studio Coast AND 2018 ZEPP concerts. None are better -- even counting the awesome 2021 Shibuya concert -- for sound, atmosphere, performance and song list! Thx D-Nerd!

You should try a recent clip from their Lolapolooza 2023 gig. They did Dice segue into Hate as a highlight. Her drumming is a prominent part of that show piece.

Gawd, Colin...I could watch Akane play all day...I might forget to blink !... Then my eyes would get dry, my vision would blur, I'd have to put drops in, yada yada yada...Too stressful...But then again, if I just DREAM it , my eyes won't get tired and since it's a dream i can be there with her... problem solved ! I was ALMOST worried for a second . 😉. Thanks again for a reaction like no other... Hockey is BACK... Let's do this !

Thanks for the review, to bad you had to cut it short. She is so economical with her drumming style. No exaggerated arm movements, looks like they are doing their own ballet. Every hit has a purpose and is an integral part of the songs overall structure.. She deserves more attention as being one of the best drummers in the world right now. Are there any media outlets that have done an article on her? If not, what are they waiting for? Concernig the cymbal choke, it looks like how I would hold chop sticks, where you use the thumb and index to move the top slick. Just an observation, no malice intended.

4:51Just a little note, just because I think it's a cool little trick that people can use in their music. That isn't actually a ritardando she plays there. It's a triplet. It sounds like she's slowed down, because she played three notes where we expect to hear four. It's a really cool trick that let's you sound like things are slowing down without disrupting the flow of the song, keeping the whole band on the beat, cos the tempo hasn't actually changed.

It is quite difficult to play the 16th note combination of single kick, snare and toms in the intro section at 180 bpm and the verse section is also quite tricky with the jazz-like snare syncopated to an 8th-note offbeat and open hi-hat to an 8th-note onbeat and offbeat.

Band Maid? I’m always there. And I always enjoy your breakdowns of why Akane is so good at what she does. And highlights on her unusual techniques (scissor choke?) I’m still waiting for someone to explain her choice to grip higher up on her left stick while holding a more typical grip on the right? As a guitarist, can I say how frustrating it is to clearly hear that fantastic octave work Kanami’s doing in those choruses, but it’s buried in the actual song release? OMG Mr. Record Producer dude…PUSH HER FADER UP!! Drum Nerd, feel better, see you on the next one

Hi, I've noticed the high grip on the stick with her left hand before, even in some older live videos. She has a slightly uncommon setup with her two rack toms (1 and 2 or High and Low), what ever you want to call them. They are placed much further to the left than is usual, around the snare drum, meaning that she doesn't have to reach so far with her left stick. This would mean that the left hand of the two toms would be on a separate stand and not the more common position, being attached roughly either side of the centre on the bass drum (where her right foot is) which would be further from her left hand. That's the only explanation I can offer I'm afraid.

@@grahamreed8774 Hey, thanks! It makes sense and is the first try at an explanation. I do notice her unusual rack tom set, smart, actually. They aren’t physically attached to the kick, so they are sonically isolated. Interesting!

@1:32 she was still doing 4/4 in the b-melody. the downbeat was just in unison with the guitar.

I'm not a drummer, as this question shows, but is there a Hi-Hat that works in reverse so it is closed tight until you depress the pedal which opens it? If such an instrument does not exist would it be of use? I know you could just get a closed hat stand but I don't see anyone doing this - as a drummer what are your thoughts before I hit the shed.

My first theory on her cymbal choke was that it might have something to do with growing up eating with chopsticks, except she eats with her right hand and chokes with her left. So that's out. My second theory is reliability. In the Benjo Sandal Dance cover video (linked below) she uses the same grip for the first choke, but the second time, around 3:21, she misses and gets three fingers above and two below. So she can be off and it still works. It also might be more reliable for holding onto the stick. I'm not an expert, I'm just guessing. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gbaXgKde07athIU.html

I just wonder if Akane-san does that for very Cymbal choke. Maybe she handles the others differently when she uses her right hand. 🤷🏻‍♂️
